Spring element specialist Ohlins is presenting the new NPX upside-down fork at EICMA 2019 in Milan. The fork is said to have become even more powerful thanks to the electronic damping control.

The new NPX fork has already passed its first baptism of fire, as it is standard on the new Yamaha YZF-R1M of the 2020 model year. And we are sure – further supersport models will follow.

Technology derived from MotoGP

The new Ohlins ERS NPX gas pressure telescopic fork with 43 mm stanchions works with a small gas reservoir that is integrated into the fork axle bracket. By generating an internal pressure of 0.6 MPa, the gas reduces the cavitation of the fork oil, which is caused by the negative pressure in the rebound stage. This enables more uniform damping control and improved shock absorption at high speeds. The feeling for the grip on the front wheel is also improved. The rebound and compression circuits are completely separate and are monitored by the electronics, or influenced depending on the driving mode.

This new technology, which was derived directly from MotoGP, is intended to contribute to more even damping behavior and improved chassis control. The bottom line is that handling should become more agile and lap times should drop.
