Retro model for her 55th birthday

The Italian clothing manufacturer Alpinestars is celebrating its 55th birthday. Instead of a mega cake, there is a mega retro bike based on a vertical shaft Duc. This has now been presented on the sidelines of the US GP.

E.in 1974 Ducati twin with open Dell’Ortos in a modern chassis – that is correct, but in its technoid objectivity it becomes this after a clothing collection “Oscar by Alpinestars" baptized creation of steel, aluminum and some rubber does not do justice. The Californian customizer Michael Woolaway has really masterfully merged these components into a work of art on two wheels. The client was, you can guess three times, Alpinestars. The Italian motorcycle clothing manufacturer wants the now completed “Oscar" celebrating its 55th anniversary and seeing the old Italian heart in the form of the air-cooled Desmo-Twin and modern trappings, a symbol of its own heritage: from the cross-boot cobbler of yore to the high-tech airbag combination manufacturer of today.

40 year old new original engine

Two years ago, says the Californian Michael Woolaway, he discovered the vertical shaft motor, still packed in the original wooden box from the factory in Bologna – 40 years old, but in brand new condition and never run. Around this he had his compatriot Jeff Cole build a tubular space frame. But not in the way that Cole had built for racing icons of the 70s and 80s.

The vertical shaft motor is brand new.

But even more filigree, with a triangular swing arm and a directly hinged central spring strut. The exhaust system with the classic guidance – right-left one-in-one – comes from Akrapovic. In reminiscence of Mick Doohan, whose right foot was handicapped due to an accident, a thumb brake actuates the rear Brembo system. The flat seat behind the aluminum tank hand-stamped by Woolaway, with the cushion that finally faces the aluminum rear, is another reminiscence of a legendary racer: Ex-world champion Nicky Hayden, who died tragically in 2017, always wanted the seat of his MotoGP Ducati to be precise so.

Uncertain future

What Alpinestars unveiled at the end of April on the sidelines of the US Grand Prix in Austin in Texas, “Oscar by Alpinestars" is not yet known. With its indicators hidden in the handlebar ends, the small but existing headlight and the rear light, the beautiful Italian-American custom bevel creation could even be (conditionally) eligible.
