There have already been many concepts for the famous last mile. With the Poimo, an inflatable scooter with an electric drive comes from Japan.

E.There are people who want to drive to their destination down to the last meter and not run. Accordingly, more and more companies are getting involved in so-called last-mile concepts. A completely new, unconventional approach now comes from Japan and is called Poimo.

In the naming there is also the whole idea. Poimo stands for "portable and inflatable mobility" – So mobility to inflate and take with you. Poimo was developed by the University of Tokyo together with Mercari R4D.

Inflate and go

The scooter weighs just 5.5 kilograms and can be completely folded up and easily stowed in a bag. In addition to the inflatable basic structure made of thermoplastic polyurethane, the kit also includes the wheels, the steering stub with integrated wireless controller and the battery pack. The small compressor for inflating is extra.

If you want to drive, unfold the body, put the wheels, the battery and the steering stub into the intended receptacles and inflate the scooter. The inflated structure should be strong enough to carry one person. The electric motor for the drive is built into the rear wheels. You steer by shifting your weight, similar to a skate board. However, there are no running boards for the feet. There was also no lighting or braking system – the braking torque of the electric motor must be sufficient here. The top speed is 6 km / h and the battery lasts for around an hour of driving.

The Poimo is still in the prototype stage. Nevertheless, its developers have already launched the next evolutionary stage of the scooter. This provides that every customer gets his very own personal scooter. With the personal choice of color and above all with the personal seating position. To do this, the customer scans his preferred seating position and transmits the data, which is then used to manufacture an inflatable scooter.

Conclusion

A mixture of an air mattress, rocking horse and e-scooter to cover the last mile – an interesting approach. The only question is whether you could not go there on foot. But that applies to all last mile projects.
