The Aprilia V4 models now have ABS-assisted braking. PS drove the slightly revised and anti-lock braking system RSV4 R and Tuono from 2014 under slippery conditions.
Sometimes rain is welcome when riding a motorcycle. When the most serious innovations in a model are a Bosch ABS and the refinement of the traction control coordination. So we were happy when the surface of the Circuito San Martino del Lago near the Italian town of Cremona was permanently watered by Petrus – just in time for the presentation of the new one A.prilia Tuono V4 R APRC ABS and RSV4 R APRC ABS.

Aprilia Tuono V4 R
While the divine help with the organizer and one or the other invited testers drooped the corners of their mouths, we enjoyed the perfect conditions to try out the electronic assistants. Pirelli supported this with sticky rain tires, so driving fun was programmed from the second flying lap.
We completed the first turn on the Aprilia Tuono V4 R in moderate R-Mapping (Road) with the ABS at level 3 and the traction control at level 6. The Tuono drives through the wet like on rails, but always feels like when accelerating she would have to drag a ton of ballast behind her. The TC regulates softly, reducing the power almost imperceptibly so as not to overwhelm the rear tire. The ABS rarely gets anything to do, but when it does, the gentle control is impressive. In level 3, the system acts integrally, the rear wheel always remains on the ground due to the programmed lift-off detection.
In the second turn, free action: the mapping to T (track), the ABS to level 1 and the TC to level 4, then the Aprilia Tuono V4 R moves forward vehemently and freed from virtual ballast. The Pirellis stick, the ABS controls only very sparsely, despite the significantly increased speed and late selected braking point, but then convincingly, and the TC controls almost nothing. In such a safe place, there is inimitable driving pleasure. Provided you avoid curbs and white lines like the devil avoids holy water. The responsiveness of the 3 HP stronger V4, the jagged, smooth gear changes and the precisely controlled brake are just as fun.

What else has changed on the Aprilia Tuono V4 R? There are new colors: matt white and black are available. The suitability for country roads and everyday use grew. This is ensured by the tank, which has been enlarged from 17 to 18.5 liters. The softer suspension (fork, shock absorber and steering damper from Sachs) ensures a high level of driving comfort without restricting the Tuono’s sporting talents too much.
On the fork, the compression and rebound stages are now housed separately from each other in a fork leg, the steering damper is still not adjustable. The shock absorber, on the other hand, is fully adjustable as usual and worked extremely well during the test drives. The modified, now more upholstered bench is barely noticeable. It also increases the driving comfort of the Tuono V4 R APRC ABS, the hottest iron on the country road.

The superbike was also slightly modified for 2014. Of course, the racer also received the Bosch ABS and the larger tank. Nominally, the performance of the V4 engine increased to 184 hp thanks to the revised exhaust system and an adjustment of the injection mapping. There was also some fine adjustment to the traction control. This was interpreted a little less restrictively, in principle its control threshold was raised by one level.
In other words: Compared to 2013 models, the TC now always regulates one level less (level 6 on the 2014 model corresponds to level 5 on the 2013 model). As on the Tuono, the control itself is very gentle and significantly increases driving pleasure, especially in wet conditions. The Aprilia RSV4 R with APRC electronics package and ABS is priced at 17,390 euros (including ancillary costs), the factory version with light wheels, Ohlins chassis and carbon parts at 22,790 euros (including utilities).
Hopefully the now really mature and excellently drivable Aprilias 2014 will finally find the customers they are entitled to. It would be a shame if they continued to remain exotic.

PS judgment Aprilia Tuono V4 R and RSV4 APRC ABS
PS tester Robert Gluck.
The Tuono is the most active naked bike on the market, the RSV4 a double superbike champ. Still, hardly anyone wants these bikes. I very much hope that this will change with ABS and the even better coordinated APRC package in 2014. The bikes deserved it. Or am I the only one who is bored of the BMW S 1000 RR glut in the paddocks?
