In model year 2 of the Bologna Superbike era, the time has come: the Superbike base 1098R, the strongest diva in Italy, is ready. PS was in the saddle and didn’t want to get off.

All’Arrabiata
Incredibly powerful she pushes Ducati 1098R from the tight left-hand bend in the deepest lean position and is carried by robust, dull-aggressive hammering from its open racing mufflers. It reverberates from the boundary walls, raises the hair on the back of the neck and whips man and machine ahead on an acoustic tsunami. Just now the knee was still grinding on the ground, now the front wheel lifts emphatically towards the sky, the speed of the twin approaches the limiter. Without the front wheel stopping, the pilot shifts into third gear with no worries and thunders down the entire start / finish straight of the GP circuit in Jerez, Spain, with a sparkling clean wheelie. Casey Stoner and Troy Bayliss could certainly have done it faster, but not more beautifully.
The R is here! No more second-hand racing on the decommissioned 999R, which the Ducati works team was forced to do in the last superbike season. The new superbike is finally allowed to go and is now in the hands of solvent customers in the form of the homologation base 1098R. To anticipate the worst: it costs 35,000 euros? Including racing kit: an open Termignoni exhaust and a racing control unit in which the traction control is also stored. Not a stick, but the customer receives a tried and tested derivative from the Corse department ?? and an extremely pretty one on top of that.
So if you are willing and able to put this sum on the table, you can call your own a motorcycle that is closer to the factory racers of the Superbike World Championship than it was ever a production motorcycle. Because the new regulations considerably restrict tuning of two-cylinder engines compared to the last few years, so that the sold base has to include all the important features of the racing motorcycle. The equipment of the R is accordingly: On board, in addition to the usual suspects such as titanium connecting rods and a large number of carbon parts, are a MotoGP-derived traction control, an anti-hopping clutch and an Ohlins TTX shock absorber.
Explosive temper
Ducati
MotoGP and Superbike World Championships greet you: The first traction control of a series motorcycle can be activated in 8 stages.
Jerez is a home game for the 1098R. This fast and fluid race track requires two things above all: performance in the motorcycle and courage in the driver. The first is abundantly available; the second helps the DTC, the Ducati Traction Control on the jumps? see below. At 6000 rpm, the engineers promise, hit 100 Nm and almost 90 hp rear tires and chain, the maximum values are 134 Nm at 7750 rpm and 180 hp at 9750 rpm. The way to the rev limiter is always an explosive one because of the short-stroke design of the Desmos. Even in the upper gears, there is hardly any fatigue.
The Testastretta Evoluzione delivers the big punch thanks to a proper revision. 2 millimeters more stroke and 3.2 mm more bore than the standard 1098 increase the displacement to 1200 cubic meters; Titanium connecting rods, a lighter crankshaft and titanium valves at the inlet and outlet lay the foundation for further increases in speed, i.e. performance. The motor housing of the R is made by sand casting instead of die casting, which allows lower wall thicknesses with the same rigidity and thus also helps to reduce weight. In total, the R engine including the slipper clutch is 2.2 kg lighter than the one 1098 and a whopping 5.6 kg lighter than a 999R engine. Larger passages in the injection system supply the twin with fuel via two series-connected injection nozzles per cylinder, while sharper control times and an increased compression of 12.8: 1 (12.5: 1 in the 1098) do the rest for the mixture.
Pouring is the order of the day, the touchdown comes shortly before the braking point at the end of the straight: the front wheel touches down with a small cloud of smoke and turns the R into a two-wheeler again. However, this condition only lasts for a short time, because when braking on the narrow uphill right, the Duc with its poisonous monoblock brembos, which bite so vehemently into the 330 mm discs, can be precisely adjusted on the front wheel. Those who reach it a little less hard can enjoy the wonderfully functioning slipper clutch, which prevents uncomfortable rear wheel pounding and enables undisturbed turning.
A short throttle, and two bends later, you go full throttle in second gear through a very long left-hand bend uphill into fourth gear. The eye says: “Here the track hangs a little outwards.” The traction control of the 1098R replies: ?? I don’t care. ?? Full shower is the command. Of the eight control levels of the DTC, only the first four are actually necessary; Levels 5 to 8 intervene too much in the engine electronics and sometimes even cut the ignition, which feels as if the engine is at the limiter.

Also new: the Ohlins shock from the TTX-36 series. However, in fast corners it struggles with the elemental force of the engine.
In level 4 the DTC works efficiently, only takes ?? if the rear wheel slips. not noticeable for the pilot ?? the ignition a little back and thus ensures maximum acceleration without the risk of highsiders. In this quick left curve that means: Open the cock and through! The unleashed elemental force pays tribute to the Ohlins TTX 36 shock absorber, which was first used in series production. With slight pumping movements, the stern shows the tremendous pressure that the twin delivers. Adjusting the damping could not cure this symptom, but it could contain it somewhat.
The 1098R’s dynamic driving power is also revealed on the crest that leads into the back straight: full soup over the curbs, the front twitches more nervously than any Ducati front twitched, and the steering damper has to give everything to prevent kickback. The longer you take the R, the more the heretical pushes you “Why didn’t I marry a rich woman??”-Question in the brain. Not only on the straights, where the 1200 stands out like a jack of clubs in well-groomed Skat, but also in the narrower sections, where the superbike moves to the rhythm of the “I should have done it!” Pepper smoothly from one side to the other and back again.
Conclusion:
Ducati’s R versions have always been something special. That doesn’t change the 1098 R; on the contrary, it emphasizes this fact. In addition to the improved handling quality and the much more successful chassis set-up compared to the 1098S, the “Erre” with her incredibly beefy twin. There is no question that the 1098R will be successful in international racing. At the national level, where the financial blankets for tuning are considerably thinner, it remains to be seen whether Ducati can usurp the scepter.

Factory swingarms, footrests and exhaust systems. Thanks to Ducati Performance, it’s very easy to mortgage the house and yard for a motorcycle.
As usual with Ducati, the performance accessories for the 1098R will also be presented when it is released. The highlight of this tuning show is of course the mighty factory swing arm, which is not only stiffer, but also provides more space for large sprockets and fat slicks on wheels up to 6.25 inches wide. Exhaust systems with a diameter of 70 millimeters are also in the shop window, as are adjustable racing pegs with reversible shifting patterns. Even a performance slipper clutch is offered. It is 220 grams lighter than the standard component and reduces rotating mass. Of course, other carbon parts, foldable hand levers, a higher windshield and an open clutch cover complete the range.
