The latest slick from Metzeler is a very hot candidate for supersport freaks and should shine with a long durability.

Expand with the Racetec RR Slick Metzeler its range in the RR family especially for committed hobby racers. Compared to the Racetec RR, the new one is, as the name suggests, a profile-less racetrack tire, which in terms of performance is somewhat below the Diablo Superbike of the parent company Pirelli. In return, the Racetec Slick is to be offered just under 50 euros cheaper per set (front: 138 euros, rear, depending on size, 179 or 198 euros). “In addition,” says Metzeler racing manager Bjorn Lohmann, “the Slick is designed for greater durability and should therefore not cause problems for the hobby driver over a long day of racing training or even races.” Durability was a top priority when developing this slick.

PS tested the new Metzeler Racetec RR Slick for a day on the race track in Almeria. We added the mixture K1 at the front and started with the harder K2 version in the back in size 200/60 when the temperatures were still a bit cool. We liked the grip level straight away. The properties, especially of the front tire, also convinced us, because on the selective track with the narrow and confusing infield, the tire could do almost anything with it, turned in without any resistance and, via the blind crests, even forgave post-brakes in deep lean positions without any moment of pitching. The self-damping of the tire is at a very high level at the front thanks to the use of aramid in the zero-degree steel belt of the carcass, without lacking the necessary stiffness on the brakes. Accuracy and directional stability, but also a good-natured limit area make this tire a very hot candidate for supersport freaks.

K1 compound provided more grip than K2
Metzeler
The Metzeler Racetec RR Slick was developed for hobby pilots with a focus on durability.
However, after three turns, the K2 no longer showed a clean running pattern, to which the Metzeler technicians reacted and transmitted the results to the parent company in Milan. The reason for this conspicuousness lies in the envisaged production using the “NBM” (New Building Machine) process, in which instead of the mixture being completely applied in a wide strip, several smaller strands of rubber are placed around the tire. The razor-sharp, sandy slope with the many fast exits to curves has probably exacerbated this phenomenon.
On the other hand, the slick rear tire in the softer K1 compound, which basically works without NBM, was perfect. The Racetec Slick withstood two single turns and a 40-minute double turn like nothing, even when the temperature dropped in the evening, delivered a significantly higher level of grip than the K2 and allowed us to control the traction of the test machine BMW S 1000 RR in the slick -Mode down to level two. So the 1000s liked to lift the front wheel at the exit of a curve without even a violent slide. The good news for hobby racers: We left the chassis settings in the standard state throughout the test, because Metzeler propagates the slick as a problem-free and good-natured attacker for fast to very fast pilots who want to achieve good lap times without major setup experiments. After the compact test day, we think that’s successful. This makes the Metzeler Racetec RR Slick an excellent addition to the range of real racetrack tires.
Metzeler Racetec RR CompK Slick
For newcomers to the racetrack and hobby racers without great racing ambitions, there is also the Racetec RR CompK Slick, which we unfortunately did not have available in Almeria. We are firmly committed to a comparison of the RR slicks with the direct competition for one of the next editions. The tire has been delivered in sizes 120/70 (front) and 180/60 or 200/60 (rear) since mid-January.
