Piaggio MP3 Hybrid 300ie

The latest hybrid version of the Piaggio tricycle was honored in the city of love. You can find out whether and how it worked here.

There are several theories why the Italians are presenting their new city electric car to the public in Paris, of all places: The MP3 Hybrid 300ie, similar to the Eiffel Tower that opened in 1889, could serve as a signal for the departure into a hopeful future. Or the choice of location is due to the fact that France is by far the most important market for the tricycle. In 2009 alone, around 12,000 MP3s were distributed there, four times as many as in Germany. The hybrid should further increase these numbers. The conventional, 25 hp petrol engine is supported by an electric motor with 2.6 kW (3.5 hp) located directly on the clutch, depending on the operating mode. Pure electric operation is also possible, Vmax is then 30 km / h, the range should be around 20 kilometers.

The truism that the spice lies in brevity applies to wedding speeches, it does not apply to travel appointments. This was just a fleeting impression. In addition, in the turmoil of traffic in Paris, the instinct for self-preservation forces us to focus our attention on the surroundings and less on the base itself. Nevertheless, several insights were gained: 1. When accelerating in hybrid mode, the electric motor provides propulsion for the first few meters before the combustion engine takes over. That sounds like a slipping clutch – only backwards. 2. The charge level indicator also fell in battery charging mode. 3. With all-electric operation, the driving dynamics are at the Reha-Mobil level. 4. When reversing, the MP3 beeps like a garbage truck. A test has to show what the hybrid, which is supposed to be available this summer for around 9200 euros, is really capable.

W.Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 278 cm³, 18.2 kW (25 PS) at 7500 / min, 27.5 Nm at 3500 / min, centrifugal clutch, stepless automatic belt. Air-cooled, brushless three-phase AC permanent magnet motor with lithium-ion batteries (36 V / 31 Ah), power 2.6 kW (3.5 PS), torque 15 Nm, charging by means of an integrated generator when driving, braking or over the power grid.
