Price-performance winner of the 1000-point evaluation
A candidate

The Yamaha MT-07, Honda CB 500 F and Triumph Street Triple passed the price-performance test in the 1000-point ranking of MOTORRAD with great praise. In addition to the glorious three, there are 45 other machines with a one before the decimal point. We introduce some outstanding representatives.

The Yamaha MT-07, the Honda CB 500 F and the Triumph Street Triple are the bikes with the best value for money. In addition to being the front runner, they also represent the majority of the 48 first-class candidates in this discipline. They come from the middle class of street motorcycles, have between 500 and 750 cm³ displacement and cost between 5600 and 9000 euros – 28 of the 48 motorcycles remain in this range.

One of the reasons for the superiority of the middle class when it comes to the price-performance ratio criterion is the simple fact that the top is getting tighter. Making an already very good motorcycle even better requires a disproportionately high amount of effort in terms of development, testing and the quality of the components. This is then also disproportionately expensive. And although the MOTORRAD 1000-point evaluation is characterized by everyday use, even wonderfully everyday, but expensive motorcycles such as the BMW R 1200 R (705 points) or the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 (671 points) only achieve the grade 1, 93. Not to mention top-class specialists like one Ducati 1199 Panigale, which, except in races, has little chance of converting its outstanding skills into points.

Product planners deliberately offer the bikes at a competitive price

Even the apparent exception to this rule, the BMW S 1000 R With a proud 730 points, her grade of 1.69 is achieved mainly because the product planners deliberately offer it at a competitive price. At 12,800 euros base price plus 1,700 euros for the sports and dynamics package, that may sound pretty aloof, but it is more plausible than the BMW S 1000 RR. Because the basic version costs 16,100 euros, but even with additional features it scores fewer points than the R..

However, the BMW S 1000 RR points to a second important reason for the superiority of the middle class: the psychology of pricing. A 1000 or even 1200 can be sold more expensively than a 600, which is why the manufacturers usually buy it right here. In the price-sensitive middle class from 500 to around 800 cubic centimeters, on the other hand, they hold back and forego one or the other tenth of a percent in return in favor of potentially higher sales figures.

Because a particularly large number of customers can be won in this segment, some of whom may later switch to higher-priced motorcycles, the costs can be allocated to more units sold and partly to the marketing budget. This strengthens the “property component” of the price-performance rating. To put it bluntly: motorcycles are better than expensive.

How the property evaluation, the price and the costs of the special equipment are offset against a note is at least partially explained in a box on the following double page. Simply dividing the price by the number of points is no longer enough. Since the prices of different motorcycles can easily vary by five times, but the number of points cannot, it was necessary to incorporate correction factors. Fortunately, the formula is now ready to use in a spreadsheet.

The best three

1. Yamaha MT-07: price-performance grade 1.0. It not only won the hearts of the drivers straight away, but also won the first group test.

What makes the top three stand out from the group of 45 other motorcycles with a very good price-performance rating? First of all, the extremely low price, with which, above all, the Yamaha and the Honda shine. In addition, it is noticeable how persistently the champions collect points in a total of 43 individual criteria, including those such as handiness, cornering stability and suspension comfort, which are really not easy to harmonize in a single motorcycle.

Because of its high-quality spring elements, the Street Triple ahead here, but scores even harder thanks to its sensational three-cylinder engine. On the other hand, it drives up the price, as does the high quality of the fork and shock absorber. In comparison to the second-placed Honda, the Triumph demonstrates the arithmetic of the price-performance formula: 59 points more are paid a little too dearly at around 3050 euros extra. That costs 0.06 note values, rounded up to a tenth.

The winner, the Yamaha MT-07, broke the tried and tested formula for the first time. In relation to the other two bikes on the podium, it loses only 23 points on the strong Triumph and costs only 405 euros more than the Honda, the cheapest of the trio. Strictly according to the formula, this results in the legendary grade 0.63. As with certificates at the end of a school year, the MOTORRAD score comes off at 1.0, at the other end of the spectrum it is capped at 4.0. If, however, another motorcycle or two of the kind MT-07 appear, the MOTORCYCLE mathematicians will revise their formula.

26. Honda VFR 800 F: price / performance rating 1.6. A look at the engine rating shows what would be possible with 1000 cm³. Otherwise everything is fine.

What is better? Lots of points or a great price? In the case of the Honda VFR 800 F and the Kawasaki Ninja 300 the answer is clear: “Yes”. Because although the two differ by 119 points in favor of the Honda with 688 to 569 points and by 6395 euros in favor of the small Kawasaki with 11,990 to 5595 points, their price-performance scores differ only in the second place behind the decimal point.

the Kawasaki scores surprisingly strong in the chassis rating. It receives 23 points less than the Honda, but it also offers an exceptionally good chassis that can only be topped by athletes with the finest components. Apart from the overdamped shock absorber, the Ninja 300 So also according to absolute standards of chassis quality, which would be good for a more expensive motorcycle. And the Honda would probably jump the 700 point mark with a more powerful engine and catapult itself into the front half of the firsts candidates.
With 730 points, the BMW S 1000 R is the hardest-working point collector among the top candidates. But it only manages this with two equipment packages, which drive their price up to a total of 14,500 euros. Including the semi-active chassis, which contributes a lot to the sensational chassis rating.

4. Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom: price-performance rating 1.1. It has been popular for many years as a fine combination of good properties and an affordable price.

With the exception of the Suzuki V-Strom 650, it is obviously not easy for enduros to keep up with road machines in terms of price-performance ratio. The enduresque motorcycles, which are furthest ahead after the Suzuki, are actually street machines in disguise. For example a Honda NC 700 X and its successor, the Honda NC 750 X, which is slightly more expensive but not equally better. Or the two-cylinder supermoto Ducati Hypermotard. It shines with its engine derived from a street athlete and scores well in the chassis section.

The Honda NC 700 X costs 400 euros more than the CBR 500 S, its successor NC 750 X even 900 euros. Large travel enduros of the caliber of a KTM 1190 Adventure or Triumph Tiger Explorer get stuck in the displacement-price trap (see introduction) and cannot fully compensate for their high-price equipment with their excellent property ratings. For this reason, BMW is represented here with the BMW F 700 GS and not with the R 1200 GS.

As already stated in the introduction: Most of the price-performance professionals come from medium displacement classes. All the more remarkable are the Honda CBF 1000 F and Yamaha MT-09, where the manufacturers have obviously resisted the temptation to pay too dearly for the larger, prestigious displacement.

Calculation of the price-performance rating

Price-performance winner from MOTORRAD

MOTORCYCLE

An overview of the price-performance winners of the 1000-point evaluation.

How does the price-performance rating come about? By the end of 2006, MOTORRAD had awarded a number of points for the price-performance ratio. Up to 40 points were awarded for the quotient from the property evaluation (total number of points achieved) and the vehicle price. They were included in the 1000 point rating. However, this approach preferred inexpensive motorcycles over fee because vehicle prices can range between 5000 euros and over 25,000 euros, but the total number of points usually ranges between 400 and 770 points. It therefore makes more sense to simply evaluate the properties independently of the price – the 1000-point evaluation – in combination with an additional price-performance rating. The aim was to give cheap and good motorcycles a similar price-performance rating as very good machines that are a little more expensive.

First, the MOTORRAD test department compiled vehicles from the different categories and gave them a preliminary price-performance rating based on their total number of points and their price. When, after long discussions, all motorcycles were ranked in a meaningful way, this was put into a complex mathematical equation, according to which the price-performance score has been calculated ever since. To put it simply, two motorcycles can get the same price-performance rating if one of them is 1000 euros more expensive, but also scores around 18 points more. This means that the ratio of very good and expensive, good and cheap is better balanced than before, but there is still a slight advantage for the good and cheap motorcycles. As an incentive for manufacturers.
