Helmets with a sun protection factor
Driving against the low sun, possibly on a wet road, is like flying blind without an autopilot. Unless you own a helmet with an integrated sun visor. MOTORRAD has tested ten current models in the laboratory and in practice.
Holger Hertneck
02/28/2008
And once again green dots dance around for seconds in the field of vision, because the course of the road behind the crest leads exactly in the direction of the rising sun. The only thing that helps is turning off the gas, squinting and hoping that the spook will soon be over. Owners of helmets with an integrated sun visor just have to reach for the control slide in good time and they can continue their journey at undiminished speed and, above all, without obstructing their vision. While integrated sun visors are almost standard equipment on flip-up helmets, so far only a few full-face helmet manufacturers have used this feature. MOTORRAD got all models available at the beginning of the year and tested them according to tried and tested samples. The total of ten test subjects are distributed among the six manufacturers Akira, Caberg, Givi, HJC, Schuberth and Scorpion.

Fit / wearing behavior (20 points): Does the helmet sit firmly and securely on the head even at high speeds? Are there any unpleasant pressure points? Field of vision and suitability for glasses are also part of this criterion.
Aerodynamics (10 points): At 150 and 200 km / h, the test drivers rated the forces that occur when the head is straight and when the head is turned.
Acoustics (10 points): How high is the noise level when driving? Open helmets like the one in the lower area Givi X01 do very badly here, whereas the well-encapsulated R1 and S1 Pro models from Schuberth are downright heavenly quiet.
Ventilation (10 points): It is incomprehensible that some manufacturers fail to provide sufficient fresh air and head cooling. Some of the control buttons are also completely unacceptable. The two helmets from Schuberth, which shine with excellent ventilation and whose large buttons can be operated perfectly, also serve as role models here.
Handling (10 points): How comfortably can the candidates be put on and taken off, how well do the operation and adjustment of the chin strap fasteners work? Operation and changing of the visor are also part of the handling. There is a deduction for a stiff latching like with the Akira as well as for a visor change, which like with the Givi X01 is only possible with a tool.
Sun visor function (5 points): How easy is it to operate? Are intermediate positions also possible? How big is the coverage of the field of vision? Is the sun visor fog-free? The models by Schuberth and Scorpion achieved full points. The mechanics of the HJC helmets do not allow an intermediate position, which leads to a deduction of points.
Processing / equipment (10 points): First and foremost, this includes a clean finish on the helmets. There are also points for a fog-free visor, a removable inner lining and reflective material.
Weight (5 points): The Givi H40.1 and the show that helmets with an integrated sun visor can be surprisingly light HJC FS-10 Carbon, both of which weigh significantly less than 1400 grams – a figure that many conventional full-face helmets exceed.
CONCLUSION
Except for a few drawbacks, the test candidates present themselves as practical and safe companions when riding a motorcycle. And they all have one thing in common: when the sun visor is down, it has finally faded out.

Transformation artist
The Givi X01 claims a special position not only in the present test field, but generally for the entire helmet market. With this model, the northern Italians, leading in the motorcycle suitcase and luggage systems segment, show the established helmet manufacturers what is possible in terms of helmet conversion. You are actually giving the X01 two interchangeable chin parts? one closed with a lockable ventilation slide for cold days and one with two large (non-lockable) openings for trips in summer temperatures. The highlight: The ECE-compliant chin parts can be changed easily without tools and both passed the motorcycle shock absorption tests. The acceleration and HIC values at the chin impact point determined by TuV Rheinland are absolutely within the permissible limits for both components.
Another special feature: with the chin guard removed, the X01 full-face helmet becomes an open, airy jet helmet in no time at all. However, the head ventilation is not very practical: Before setting off, the helmet owner must decide whether to choose the closed or open version. The corresponding components can be exchanged in a few moments with the help of a small special key. Despite this small shortcoming, MOTORRAD is of the opinion: Finally an innovative new development that is blowing a breath of fresh air into the helmet market. More please.
Shock absorption – safety
In a tried and tested manner, MOTORRAD, in cooperation with TuV Rheinland, carried out shock absorption tests with all test candidates based on the currently valid test standard ECE-R 22.05. According to the experience of the TuV experts, testing was carried out in the particularly critical temperature range of minus 20 degrees Celsius with the flat anvil prescribed for this purpose. The six test points required by the standard and previously recorded using a template on the forehead, right and left side of the helmet, crown, back of the head and chin were tested and the associated data recorded (see below).
For this purpose, the respective test helmet is fixed on a matching test head, inside which sensors record the accelerations that occur. From a height of around three meters, the helmet and the test head fall onto the anvil at an impact speed of 7.5 m / s (with the chin part test at 5.5 m / s). The registered data is forwarded directly to a computer, which uses the accelerations to calculate the HIC value (Head Injury Criterion), a measure of the expected traumatic brain injuries. According to ECE, the permissible limit values for acceleration are 275 g, the HIC limit value is 2400.
It is very interesting in this context that the most expensive test candidate, the Schuberth S1 Pro, and by far the cheapest, the Akira Izumi, delivered the best acceleration and HIC values of all ten test subjects. With regard to the shock absorption test according to ECE, cheaper does not automatically mean worse.

Helmet care
Insect bombardment outside, dust and sweat inside ?? Regular helmet care is essential. The outer shell is best cleaned with a sponge and warm soapy water. Stubborn insect remains are soaked for a few minutes with a damp cloth. This is especially true for the visor to prevent scratches. Lubricants based on silicone or Vaseline help against squeaky visor mechanisms? never use oils that would attack the plastic. Musty inner linings are particularly uncomfortable. Practical when the lining can be removed. Hand washing with soapy water and subsequent drying are then child’s play. Fixed chucks can be moved onto the body either with a special helmet pad cleaner (for example from Dr. Wack) or with a damp sponge and soapy water. Sharp detergents are not good, as their chemical substances could seriously damage the scalp.
Buy right
If you want to be happy with your motorcycle helmet, you should proceed conscientiously when buying it. The be-all and end-all is the fit, because the head protection can only be used carefree when it is in the right position. Helmets that are too tight or pressure points reduce the feel-good factor and thus the ability to concentrate dramatically. Models that are too large can slip at higher speeds and in the event of a fall, which increases the risk of injury. So it’s best to take a lot of time and buy from specialist retailers in order to be able to try out the models in question extensively? if possible including a test drive. The ventilation functions and the noise development can be checked at the same time. In any case, all ventilation switches should be operated with gloves, this also applies to the visor operation. Wearers of glasses should also try on the driving glasses. Anyone who frequently drives with a balaclava must also take this into account when considering the space requirements.

Sunscreen
Tinted visor
Advantages: entire field of vision darkened, no disruptive cut-off line; quickly folded up if necessary; available in many different tint grades for most helmets
Disadvantages: Not ECE compliant; not suitable for night use; when folded up (for example when driving in an unlit tunnel) extreme drafts
sunglasses
Advantages: Depending on the tint, high glare protection is possible; Good eye protection even with the visor folded up and with maximum fresh air supply
Disadvantages: helmet must be suitable for glasses (channel for temple); not suitable for night use; not to be set down while driving (danger when entering tunnels); For example, if dust gets into your eyes, you cannot rub your fingers without taking off your glasses
Nolan VPS system
Advantages: Easy to use and independent of the visor; good glare protection
Disadvantages: extra weight; Dirt can get stuck between the visor and the external sun visor? intensive cleaning; Air resistance and noise level increased when the cover is raised; only available for a few Nolan helmet models
Sunax sun visor
advantages: fits in almost every helmet; due to the slight tilt of the head, good glare protection or unobstructed view possible, depending on requirements; can be dismantled at any time and installed in another helmet; relatively inexpensive (from 19.95 euros at Louis)
Disadvantages: the edge of the sun visor is always in the field of vision; cannot be removed while driving; only narrow protective strip
Schuberth S1 Pro – from 499 euros
Provider: Schuberth, Telephone 0531/380050, www.schuberth.de

minus
Big weaknesses in shock absorption; not very suitable for people who wear glasses; very difficult
Conclusion
The Exo 1000 is way ahead in all practical criteria. Particularly noticeable: the smart cheek inflation function. Problems with the shock absorption test ruin the Scorpion helmet with a far better end result
Verdict: satisfactory
Conclusion
Sun visors improve the everyday usability of motorcycle helmets. If necessary, simply fold it down and the sun stays outside. With the FS-10 Carbon and Givi with the H40.1, HJC show that full-face helmets with this additional equipment do not have to be heavy as lead. The best overall package has once again been put together by the manufacturer Schuberth, who is right at the forefront with two models. In particular, when it comes to the acoustics and ventilation criteria, the competitors can cut a thick sheet. Particularly pleasing: the excellent shock absorption values of the cheapest participant Akira Izumi.
