8 full-face helmets with sun visors in the test
Motorcycle helmets from 150 to over 600 euros
Integrated sun visors are now popular instead of sunglasses. At least with full-face helmets for motorcyclists. So, dear MC folding chair: Please read this test and get it covered immediately.

An old saying that wears sunglasses is: “It’s never too dark to be cool.” Yes, it is! Anyone who has ever stumbled into an unlit, surprisingly curved and wet-surfaced tunnel on a high-spirited, possibly even sunny Alpine motorcycle tour with sunglasses on and a lot of caracho, knows for sure that it is very likely to be too dark for sunglasses can.

But it doesn’t even have to be the nasty Alpine tunnel. Constantly changing lighting conditions can also bring the first spring trip with April weather. It is then quite practical to provide blackout or clairvoyance with a short grip of the left hand – the sun visor integrated into the helmet makes it possible. In the meantime, practically every helmet manufacturer, apart from Arai, has at least one appropriately equipped model in their range.

Large numbers of people buy motorcycle helmets with sun visors
And the huge market success proves this development right. According to market experts, well over half of all newly sold full-face helmets are now equipped with the said sun protection. Full-face helmets without a sun visor can practically only be sold to sports drivers who mount a tinted visor for racing. Or in the absolute low-price segment, where every euro counts. The very broad masses buy sun visors.
Reason enough to feel exactly this species on the plastic in this year’s MOTORRAD helmet test. MOTORRAD made a conscious decision not to include a price bracket in the invitation to the helmet test that was sent to 23 suppliers in order to be able to clarify whether the sales price actually has anything to do with quality. The answer can be anticipated: yes and no. Otherwise, the test specifications remained quite generous: It only had to be a currently available series model that had successfully passed the test according to ECE-R 22.05, which can serve as a target group for sporty touring riders with a focus on naked bikes.
So eight models came together. Not a great number, but a pretty decent range that shows what is currently available for just under 150 to over 600 euros. In addition to well-known models such as the Schuberth S2 and the hero New products like the HJC RPHA ST also entered the race. In the tried and tested MOTORRAD helmet test manner, the candidates had to diligently collect points in the practical and laboratory tests. The laboratory test on the drop test stand of TuV Rheinland in Cologne clearly showed that the helmet manufacturers have put a lot of know-how into improving shock absorption in recent years.

Good results in the 7.5 m / s test
At the premiere of the more stringent MOTORRAD helmet test four years ago, many models were still well above 200 g in the 7.5 m / s test on the right side of the helmet (the ECE limit is 275 g) this time – apart from a small outlier – only values below 200 g. The HIC value relevant for the awarding of points, for which MOTORRAD set the then somewhat utopian target value of 1000 four years ago, was within reach this time – HJC and Airoh not much is missing from the ideal.
But the rest of the test field also delivered decent values, and even when striking the chin (which was not included in the evaluation), Shark and Held in particular showed with surprisingly low g values that a lot has changed. The bottom line is that all the helmets tested did a good to very good laboratory job, the spread in the awarding of points was therefore quite narrow with a maximum of 20 and a minimum of 17 and proves that shock absorption does not have to have anything to do with the sales price.
The practical test had to decide whether to win or lose. And it quickly became clear that price definitely plays a role. For example with the equipment, because a standard Pinlock visor, which reliably prevents fogging as a “double lens”, is difficult to implement with a helmet price of less than 150 euros. After all, the visors of the two discount offers are from Caberg and Held are equipped with a Pinlock preparation and can be easily retrofitted for around 30 euros each.
Regardless of the price, a few equipment features have now established themselves that were only reserved for higher-priced helmets 10 or 15 years ago. Attentive readers will not have missed the fact that the equipment item “removable and washable lining” is no longer explicitly mentioned, because that is now a matter of course.

“Fiddly to use” and “practically without function”
A few years ago it was possible to lose a lot of lines about nail-killing visor-changing dramas, but this topic has practically been dealt with. With almost all helmets this works very quickly and easily. The slight criticism of the Rocc visor change is due to complaints at a high level and mainly due to the fact that there is no model-specific operating manual for the 550 Full Carbon and you have to dig into the topic of changing the lens yourself.
Elsewhere, however, some helmet manufacturers have learned nothing or very little in recent years. Which devil rode the designer of the Shark visor when it came to the shape of the visor opener remains a mystery.
The only fact is that the part in question is a real annoyance because it cannot be operated and that it can be seen as a smooth faulty design. Some of the engineers responsible for ventilation slides and flaps should actually sink into the floor in shame, because the deadly combination of “fiddly to use” and “practically without function” is not that rare.
HJC RPHA ST is test winner
If you read the final rating table a little more closely, you will quickly see where the individual models have their strengths and weaknesses. And that’s why the MOTORCYCLE helmet test is just like in real life: if you don’t have any real weaknesses and always collect points, you will end up at the front. That’s the one doing this year HJC RPHA ST, which continues a great series of HJC test wins and impressively proves that the world’s largest motorcycle helmet manufacturer can not only be cheap but also really good.
The real surprise, however, is Airoh, an Italian helmet brand that the MOTORRAD testers have always placed in the solid, but not really exhilarating midfield. Respect, the Airoh Movement is a whole class better. What doesn’t change the fact that this test may serve as a guide, but the personal favorite can have a completely different name – see the “Editor’s hit lists” below.

plus
Easy to put on and take off; good fit, tight fit, comfortable lining; good aerodynamics; very good ventilation on the top of the head, good ventilation of the chin parts; practical and clearly defined visor locking, very easy visor change; Sun visor operation unconventional (button and lever), but very practical with a bit of getting used to; very good shock absorption values.
minus
The sun visor distorts a bit in the middle area and can be too tight for larger glasses frames (otherwise good glasses suitability); relatively high noise level; Chin ventilation slider a bit fiddly to use.
Conclusion:
The Airoh is the real surprise of this test and offers a lot of helmet for relatively little money. Apart from the noise level, the Italian scores strongly in all categories.

The non-participants
With eight participants, the test field is quite clear this time. At least 23 helmet manufacturers and suppliers were invited. In addition to the rejection classics “We have nothing suitable in the program” and “There is nothing new”, this time the fear of one’s own courage also played a role (“100 euro helmet for 600 euro helmet – we can only lose there”) and internal company issues (“restructuring of our European headquarters”) play a role of rejection. A few providers also preferred not to contact us at all. Two top dogs, probably particularly missed by some readers, deserve a separate consideration at this point.
Arai against sun visors, Shoei against test method
Arai: In principle, the Japanese manufacturer has something against integrated sun visors and sees them as a potential structural weakening – a real question of philosophy. But Arai could not completely ignore what was happening on the market and presented a retrofit solution at Eicma 2013: the visor with the sun visor attached. MOTORRAD would have liked to have tested this in a little extra story, but until the start of the test, only samples and no series parts were available.
Shoei: The second Japanese supplier has nothing against integrated sun visors and the GT Air (from 479 euros) also has a suitable model in its range. But Shoei has something against the MOTORRAD test method and would only have been willing to take part in the test if the shock absorption had been tested exclusively in accordance with ECE-R 22.05, i.e. ECE edge anvil instead of Sigma posts. MOTORRAD got the GT Air anyway and unofficially let it run in the test.
Well, dear Shoei troop, there was no need to worry, your helmet would have achieved a “very good” rating. But now he has not. But it’s a shame too.
Motorcycle helmets on the TuV test bench
Without the ECE test R 22.05, which is mandatory for motorcycle helmets, nothing works in the MOTORRAD helmet test either. Because the helmets only make it into the editorial team’s test selection when they have passed the shock absorption that is uniformly regulated across Europe.
However, a mundane re-measurement of the ECE values is now superfluous. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the helmet manufacturers observe themselves closely. Peter Schaudt, helmet expert at TuV Rheinland: “As soon as a provider with new models appears on the market, we receive them from competitors to check the ECE values.” On the other hand, in the opinion of MOTORRAD, the ECE only sets a minimum requirement for motorcycle helmets Are defined. On the one hand, this is due to the sometimes absurd test specifications in which the drop tests take place with helmets frozen to minus 20 degrees.
Guard rail carrier instead of ECE edge anvil
In addition, the points of impact are precisely defined in the European standard. Which in turn encourages some helmet providers to reinforce the test points accordingly. A procedure that is within the legal framework, but which makes critics scoff that one could even knit a bobble hat ECE-compatible using this method. In 2009, MOTORRAD therefore sat down at the table with TuV expert Schaudt and accident researcher and biomechanic Florian Schueler (University of Freiburg) to develop a practical test procedure for helmets. For four years now, the “MOTORCYCLE helmet standard” has proven itself in numerous comparative tests.
The central point: the helmet continues to fall from a height of around three meters on the test stand of TuV Rheinland, but not on the ECE edge anvil, but on a real guardrail support (“Sigma post”), which, according to Florian Schueler, is often tragic in accidents Role. The helmets are also tested at room temperature; the impact on the left and right side occurs at both low and high speed.
According to ECE, an acceleration value of 275 g is permissible in the event of an impact on the test anvil. The probe equipped with sensors forwards the g-value to a computer, which calculates the HIC-value with the help of other parameters (duration of force application). The “Head Injury Criterion” is considered by doctors and biomechanics as an informative value for making statements about possible brain / skull injuries. The ECE allows a maximum HIC value of 2400. An abstract number, but above all far beyond good and bad. The MOTORRAD expert crew agrees: “In the MOTORRAD test, HIC 1000 should be feasible!” The top values in this year’s MOTORRAD helmet test prove that some helmet manufacturers are already coming very close to this target value. The wish to the helmet manufacturers is nevertheless: stay tuned to the topic, there is a lot more possible!
