For Honda CBF 1000 and Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (K7 / K8)

Regardless of whether you are an athlete or a touring bike, good wind protection saves energy, lowers the noise level and increases concentration while riding. MOTORRAD has tried alternatives for the less than convincing series windshields from the Honda CBF 1000 and Suzuki GSX-R 1000.

Holger Hertneck

03/12/2009

With the 2006 presented CBF 1000 Honda achieved a great success. The reliable all-rounder is a shopping vehicle, motorhome, two-person transporter and fun bike in one. Blatant weaknesses are alien to the Japanese. Only the windshield is felt by the long-distance traveler group as a weak point. Annoying turbulence, high noise level and, despite the height adjustment, not really good wind protection are the criticisms. Reason enough for MOTORRAD to have seven retrofit discs compete against the production model.

Participants include Ermax, Five Stars, Givi, MRA (with two models), Powerbronze and the Bullster brand, which is so far little known in Germany. Their disc is brand new and had no ABE at the time of going to press. The focus of the test is the wind protection. MOTORRAD examined how well the candidates present themselves in driving tests on the autobahn at speeds of 150 and 200 km / h as well as in the wind tunnel of the Magdeburg helmet manufacturer Schuberth. The other test points included ease of installation, accuracy of fit and workmanship. The installation of the panes is child’s play, even for laypeople.

A suitable Phillips screwdriver is sufficient as a tool to loosen or tighten the four retaining screws. The rubber covers, which are shaped differently (and marked accordingly) for the right and left side of the pane, can be removed without tools, but not easily reassembled for all candidates. For example, the five-star windshield rests on the cockpit fairing so that some rubber nipples do not slip into the holes provided: the rubber covers stick out a little at these points. Back to the criterion of wind protection: In this point, all retrofit screens are better than the original, in some cases even considerably. In terms of turbulence and the level of noise when driving, only the MRA tours can convince with their flat windshield angle. The Bullster and Givi models stand out due to their extreme noise development, and in return they offer excellent wind protection. Behind these two very high windows it gets uncomfortably loud from 50 km / h? Ear plugs are highly recommended (not only for them).

Conclusion: There are, the recommended alternatives for the CBF series disc. Taking into account the checkpoints at hand, the Givi model is clearly ahead of the game ?? especially because it catches the wind best and protects the driver almost perfectly. MOTORRAD did not rate the design ?? this is reserved for the CBF drivers.

Windshields for Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (K7 / K8)

Product test windshields

Sdun

Wind catcher: MOTORRAD tested seven retrofit screens for the Suzuki GSX-R 1000.

A real super sports motorcycle does not need perfect wind protection. Or maybe yes? At least all those who not only let their pedals spin on the racetrack, but also drive longer distances, are happy about relief from the airstream. And the series disc of the Suzuki can do that GSX-R 1000 (K7 / K8) definitely not offer. MOTORRAD compared seven accessory models, assembled and disassembled them umpteen times, checked the accuracy of fit, ease of assembly and workmanship, and also tested them extensively in the Schuberth wind tunnel at wind speeds of 160 km / h. In addition, there were test drives on the autobahn at speeds of 150 km / h (sitting) and 250 km / h (lying down) in order to substantiate the wind tunnel tests with results from practice. And lo and behold: With some of them, even longer, fast stages can be overcome with some ease, without having to fold up small on the tank.

Measurement results Honda CBF 1000

If you sit upright, the standard disc lands in last place in four out of five criteria with the highest measured forces. The values are far less striking when the seat is bent forward. Here, the Five Stars, which is surprisingly small for a retrofit screen, performs worse overall than the original. The measuring dummy records the lowest forces in the head / neck area for both driving postures in the large models from Bullster and especially from Givi. The MRA tours are convincing with the lowest shaking forces.

Final evaluation of the windshields Honda CBF 1000 – conclusion

The clear test winner comes from Givi from Italy. Excellent wind protection, neat workmanship, easy assembly ?? almost everything fits here. Only the high level of noise results in a hefty point deduction. Those who like it quiet will find a suitable companion in the MRA tours. but only slightly better wind protection than the Honda original. In the test midfield there are other interesting alternatives that easily surpass the standard wind protection and are also convincing in terms of price. Cheaper than the Five-Stars-Disc doesn’t get it ?? but it lacks other criteria.

Influencing variables on aerodynamics – reasons for turbulence and noise development

Driving speed
In general, it is more uncomfortable and louder when riding a motorcycle as the driving speed increases. For example, it is not as turbulent for a long time at walking pace as at 120 km / h on the motorway. And yet it can happen that the noise level temporarily decreases again with increasing driving speed, because built-up resonance vibrations suddenly disappear again.

Motorcycle type / model
In the case of unclad motorcycles, annoying turbulence occurs far less often, as the airflow is not deflected by bulky cladding parts. The wind protection for the driver is, however, almost zero, and the noise level is usually higher than that of the clad machines.

Disc size
As a rule, the bigger the lens, the better the protective effect. S.

Disc inclination and position
e the steeper and further away the disc is mounted, the stronger the turbulence. The best examples of this are travel enduros à la BMW R 1200 GS, Honda Varadero or Yamaha XT 660 Z Tenere (photo).

Driving posture
Sitting upright, slightly bent over or even lying down for a long time? Depending on the posture, the aerodynamic conditions change and thus also their effects on the driver.

Head posture
The influence of this variable can easily be determined in a self-experiment. Depending on the position of the head, the noise level can change from annoyingly loud to pleasantly quiet.

helmet
It is undisputed that it is much louder in an airy cross or jet helmet than in a closed flip-up or full-face helmet. There is also no question that smart detailed solutions make helmets quieter. These include, for example: wind deflectors on the chin, a lower edge of the helmet that closes tightly towards the neck, visors embedded in the outer shell, no protruding edges or bulky ventilation buttons on the outer shell and much more. An extensive test drive before buying a helmet can save a lot of trouble.

clothing
Tight-fitting leather suit or a casual cut textile suit with a high collar? Put on a scarf and scarf, or better not? It is easy to see in practice that wildly fluttering scarves not only make you feel choked, but also raise the level of noise. A flutter-free scarf that closes the helmet cleanly at the bottom, on the other hand, is gentle on ears that are sensitive to noise.

Admission confusion – national or international?

Product test windshields

Harley-Davidson

Retrofit windows with ABE must not be as high as, for example, the production model Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic.

There are different approval requirements for windshields. Depending on which law applies, the execution of the disc is canceled. Current motorcycles are licensed for use in accordance with EC law. Standard add-on parts are included in the type approval of the vehicle. According to EC law, windshields are not checked for the field of vision criterion. Theoretically, an OEM windshield (a standard screen) could be 150 centimeters high or even higher. This is not possible for accessory retrofit panels that require a parts certificate or parts ABE. This is because national law with the provisions of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) applies to these panes. For example, Section 19 of the StVZO requires, among other things, a specified field of vision for retrofit windows. For this purpose, a standardized measuring dummy is placed on the vehicle. The connecting line between the eye point and the top edge of the window must cross the road no later than twelve meters in front of the motorcycle.

If this is not the case, there is no ABE. All other test criteria apply to both legal regulations. The attachment of the pane must therefore be stable and secure. All levers must remain operable, the view of the instruments must be guaranteed and the steering angle must not be restricted. A driving test in which the strength of the brackets, the vehicle handling and the high-speed stability are on the test program are also part of the test. Other test points are the outer edges of the pane, for which a prescribed edge radius (according to StVZO at least 3.5 millimeters) applies, as well as the splinter protection, which is also prescribed to reduce the risk of injury. So if you want to ride an ultra-high windshield in compliance with the law, you have to buy a motorcycle with a standard? Monster windshield? increase ?? The parts cannot be legally retrofitted. This is what the legislator in Germany intends to do.

In the wind tunnel – storm warning

Product test windshields

Sdun

The candidates were properly blown in the wind tunnel.

To complement the test drives, MOTORRAD, with the kind support of the Magdeburg helmet manufacturer Schuberth, examined all candidates in its wind tunnel at wind speeds of 160 km / h. A measuring manikin clad in motorcycle gear with a highly sensitive load cell in the neck provided objectively comparable values. This registers the forces that occur in ten different head positions, which are approached fully automatically during a measuring cycle, and forwards them to the computer. The total force, which is particularly important for the assessment, is calculated from the values for lift, lateral force and drag determined for the three spatial axes. The very small forces listed under the term shaking are a measure of the turbulence occurring in the head area.

For a laboratory assessment that is as meaningful as possible, the dummy was placed on the test motorcycle in two different postures: in a touristy upright riding posture on the one hand and in a sporty, forward riding posture on the other. In order to ensure identical measurement conditions, the position of the measuring dummy was only changed after all test panes had been mounted and checked one after the other in one position.

Measurement results wind tunnel – against the current

Sdun

At a constant 160 km / h, the wind hits the GSX-R front.

The wind tunnel tests with the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 were carried out in the same way as the test procedure for the Honda CBF 1000. The measuring dummy with the load cell integrated in the neck area was used for each of the eight panels in the positions upright for tourists and leaning forward for sports. The airstream rushing out of the wind tunnel tube at 160 km / h causes reactions and forces such as resistance, buoyancy, lateral force and shaking. In nine out of ten criteria, the series disk comes in last in the wind tunnel tests. Even if the differences to the rest of the field are only minor in some cases, the retrofit windows all offer better wind protection.

Final evaluation of windshields Suzuki GSX-R 1000 – conclusion

Only eleven points lie between the test winner Suzuki Racing and the last-placed Suzuki series disc. There are hardly any serious differences between the candidates. After all, all retrofit models offer better wind protection than the original? and that’s what it’s all about in the first place. If you are looking for an extremely inexpensive wind deflector, opt for the Five Stars, if you are looking for good function paired with quality, you can choose the racing windshields from Suzuki or MRA. And if you want unusual colors, GSX-R riders will find what they are looking for at Bullster or Powerbronze.
