First chapter

Whether twelve or over 30s, male or female – the starting field for 2021 is dressed entirely in blue, but still a colorful mix. the Yamaha Blu Cru Cup not only attracts the very young among racing drivers, albeit admittedly many of them. With the R3 Cup, Yamaha is putting together an attractive and relatively inexpensive package (costs for one season including motorcycle, equipment and entry fees under 15,000 euros). In addition to young racers, older people also like to use this to get a taste of racing.

The principle is as simple as it is tempting: Take a standard R3, replace the original with a racing fairing and refine the whole thing with a few chic racing parts such as the Ohlins chassis, Akrapovic exhaust, quickshifter and Gilles attachments. And then attack! The regulations stipulate the modifications precisely so that all starters fight with the same weapons.

One of them this year is PS editor Fabian, with 28 years clearly one of the older. In a self-experiment, he will duel with the young racing talent on the track and give insights into the pit lane, the field and the scene.

Part 1: Kick-off training

The first rollout on the Cup-R3 is about to take place at the Hockenheimring. In addition to me, a few other riders see the bike here for the first time. Others already have several thousand training kilometers on their watch. But that doesn’t matter today, now everyone will be out on the track together for the first time. So get on your bike and go.

First turn: Forget everything you’ve learned about lines. Anyone who knows the Hockenheimring knows a few key points, for example the entrance to the Parabolika. Stay in the right for a long time in order to be able to accelerate fully to the left. That makes sense on the 600 and 1000, but not on the 300. The point here is not to lose any momentum and to make full use of the route. In the example section, this means taking a lot of momentum from the right-hand bend, because after that you don’t have enough power to run out of distance when accelerating through. A lack of speed at the entrance of the parabolic steroids therefore hurts twice. This scenario can be applied to several parts of the route.

Realization after the first turn: It’s amazing how the boys and girls run. Above all, let it run in! The braking points are incredibly late and no superbike can keep up with cornering speed. Anyone who is here for the first time descends impressed. So do I. This isn’t a preschool, it’s tough racing.

A real challenge

Second to fifth turns: Rank fighting. Or better: be overtaken and try to stick with it. At the beginning of the Cup-R3, the main thing is to learn to trust the bike. That takes driving time, but you soon realize that the cup racers are not totally cocky, they simply know exactly what R3 and Pirelli tires can do. Speaking of which: The Supercorsa SP, which were ridden in the Cup until last year, are so sticky that the moderate power does not disturb them even in the deepest inclines. At the first race, Diablo Superbike slicks are fitted – absolutely top racing material. Until that is at the limit, I definitely still have a lot of air. Incidentally, this is also confirmed by Cup Riding Coach Dario Giuseppetti, who mixes with the field in every turn and then gives tips on lines and posture. Well, learning is fun this way.

Conclusion of the first training session: respect for everyone who shooes the little R3 around the circuit in the cup. If you want to be fast here, you have to master the basics of racing and, above all, angle it uncompromisingly. It will be a challenge for me to follow the field. But: Challenge accepted!

R3 Cup in Oschersleben – the first racing weekend

With me, 21 drivers are at the start for the first race of the season in Oschersleben. To be precise, the first two that will be held on race Sunday. But it already got exciting in the qualification training on Saturday.

Qualifying first wet, then dry

The rain came shortly before the first qualification. Because of the high temperatures, the track dried up quickly and a MotoGP-worthy tire game began. Those who drove out had rain tires on it at first, some participants didn’t even risk it because, that much can already be revealed, qualification number two should be dry and the times in the wet would be undercut anyway. Nevertheless, you get nervous when you stand in the pits with slicks on, like me, and watch the others. Because I don’t want to be without a timed lap, shortly before the end I dare to do two flying laps on the Pirelli Diablo Superbikes, which are surprisingly non-slip. On the wet spots that have already disappeared on many sections of the track on the last lap, the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben is really brisk even in these conditions.

The dry second qualifying then reveals who could end up at the front in the race. The boys and girls at the front fight for tenths and burn incredible lap times with the small 42-hp Yamahas into the asphalt. The Cup-R3 is a real racing machine even without a lot of power in the right hands. I’m in 11th place on the grid and start exactly from the middle of the field.

Cup racing makes you fast

Fabian Dresler

It is clear that it is not enough for the very front. But the first race shows why cup racing is so valuable to improve yourself. After everything was sorted out quickly at the start, I’m just close to the lead group at the beginning. They all have the same power and the same tires – so you can only blame worse lap times on yourself. And what the fast do, the others can theoretically too. So there is no better training than following someone who is faster than you with the same material! Need proof? In the first race I improve my lap time by two seconds compared to qualifying – a world in racing!

Also clear: after a few laps, the leading group is out of reach. But small groups have formed in the field who are fighting for their positions. No matter if right at the front or right at the back, there are fights to be seen everywhere in the Yamaha R3 Cup and anyone interested in exciting racing should take a look in the streams or directly at the track. My direct opponents in Oschersleben are Matthias Wunderlich and Albert Prasse, with whom I have great duels. It’s an unbelievable feeling to overtake in the race and to be overtaken yourself. You bite the handlebars, give everything, don’t want to give in – and then clap your opponent. Tough but fair, that’s how it was around me in midfield.

Race 2 – rookie mistake

In the second race, too, things are really going well again. Shortly before the end, I’m back in battle with the two well-known competitors. I improved the lap time by a tenth. But before the final fight begins, my R3 is on strike. And for a very legitimate reason: I didn’t fill up enough gasoline. Cursing, I roll out and watch the last two laps from the wrong side of the guardrail.

Team Schnuffi – Racing needs friends

Fabian Dresler

Back in the paddock, I find consolation in the team. “Team Schnuffi” printed them on their shirts and supported them all weekend. Because, again, it’s clear: Racing is teamwork and when you can concentrate on driving, everything is easier. If you also get emotional support before the race and in moments like this, you have the perfect team. Of course, I have to endure jokes about my own arithmetic – and will probably have to for a while.

At the next run in Schleiz in July, more petrol will be filled, for sure! So that something like that doesn’t happen if the IDM live stream could catch it. By the way, the results will be available from the next race here.
