Race bike: Sattler-Ducati 1098S

A balanced racing bike

This lightweight Ducati 1098S has nothing to do with delicate poetry. But she too inspires with perfect rhythm and a slight exhilaration. In a very special way.

When you talk about motorcycles from Bavaria, you almost always mean reasonably priced bikes branded with white and blue propellers that have a few pounds too much on their ribs. But southern Germany can also be different! This is shown by the company Sattler Motorsport, which is at home in a village of 5,000 people in Lower Bavaria. Based on a 2007 Ducati 1098S, she created a 173 hp racer that, when fully fueled, weighs exactly as many kilograms as its engine generates horses. This 1: 1 ratio offers breathtaking driving dynamics, but today it is no longer uncommon for large-capacity, tuned super sports bikes that are not road legal. In addition to numerous weight-reducing measures, the list of which would go beyond the scope of the test, the self-made rear is a special feature. The superbly processed individual part consists mainly of carbon fiber round tubing and weighs just 1980 grams, about three kilograms less than the production rear. To match this, the inventors built mufflers made of the same material. These modifications save weight and also lower the center of gravity. Correspondingly easy, the 1098S shoots into the corners. Even on the brakes, she angles very lightly. The Italian also circles the arches with great precision and delivers sensational feedback from the road. Unique! It runs very stable and stays reliably on the chosen line. Changing lanes on an incline is possible with the D.ucati, however, only to a limited extent. This characteristic is reminiscent of the series machine, which is known to be steadfast in circles.

The Sattler-Duc only offers real cause for criticism in one point: high-speed commuting in the Parabolika curve. Bumps after the first third of the drawn-out, ultra-fast links on the Hockenheimer circuit lead to unrest in the chassis, whereupon the Duc rocks up strongly. A little trick can help: lift your buttocks! As a result, the pilot shifts his weight almost completely to the pegs and the load can easily handle full throttle. After the parabolic means before the hairpin and that means: Grab your iron! The largely standard brake does its job perfectly. Apart from the slightly shifting pressure point, there is nothing to complain about. In contrast to the series machine, the Sattler Ducati has an anti-hopping clutch. It prevents brake stamping and ensures a quiet rear of the vehicle when anchoring. In order to increase power and torque, the tuners developed huge ram-air channels that lead significantly more fresh air into the airbox than the original parts.

A permeable air filter creates the least possible resistance on the way to the throttle valve body, and the freely programmable engine control unit proportions the spray supply. The Racing Termignoni with huge elbows (70 mm diameter) releases the exhaust gases into the open. All the innards of the engine remained untouched. Compared to series machines measured by horsepower, the Tuning Duc has around 15 hp and four Nm more. In relation to the effort a very respectable value.

The way in which the 1098S releases its power is also impressive. A gentle throttle response and the exceptionally well controllable power development despite the immense punch support the Ducatisto with the racetrack bolt and never overtax it. This applies even between 7000 rpm and 8000 rpm, where the torque and power of the V2 increase steeply. In the first two gears, the front wheel of the white-red racer naturally strives for the sky. The rollover to the rear prevents early gear changes, which take place quickly thanks to the automatic gearshift. The performance of the Sattler-Duc clearly shows: Bavaria can also do different things!
