Michael makes the cow look old

Michael Welsch, owner of the Rennkuh company in tranquil Worth am Main, has dedicated himself entirely to the Bavarian four-valve boxers. The main components of his business are GS and R optimized for road use with thick tires, different optics, engine tuning and so on. But one day the idea came up to give the technobike a radically new, i.e. old, look. The idea for retro was born.

The only requirement: The thing has to look old, nothing else. Sorting into the usual categories is difficult. It is clear that this is not a chopper or a cruiser, and the bobber category does not fit either, despite the fat wheels. Speaking of fat wheels: The tires look like they were left over from the 1970s, but the Dunlop K 527 (front 130 / 90-16, rear 140 / 90-16) are from current production. Interestingly, these tires cannot be found on the official Dunlop homepage, but they can be found without any problems at free dealers on the Internet. Cafe racers are not hit either, for that the tires are too wide and the engine is not parallel-cylinder and English enough.

But no matter, we want to drive, not sort. The rear frame was freed of all unnecessary ballast with the Flex and is covered by a beautiful, hand-ironed aluminum hood. Thanks to the shorter shock absorber, the seat, which is quite acceptable despite the thin upholstery, is a comfortable 77 centimeters above the floor. The hands fall as if by themselves on the ox-eyed handlebar stubs. There are also these wonderful semi-antique switches, which were also often installed on Neckermann mopeds in the 1970s. Finding these switches and the taillight alone took a whole day on the Veterama, according to Welsch. A tiny speedometer fills the hole in the fork bridge where the ignition lock used to be. This migrated next to the left intake duct. The necessary control lamps are in the free-standing headlights.

The high-level footrests require a very tight knee angle, and thanks to the self-folding side stand, putting the Retro down cool is always an adrenaline rush. One push of the button and the technically unchanged 1200 boxer comes to life. And how! The exhaust system is less a soundproofing than a sound conduction system. Tolerant neighbors are not a mistake, you should drive up regularly with the Retro.

With the sovereignty, indolence or serenity that large rotating masses bring with them, the Retro follows the ideally flat course of the street. The Dunlops, which do not have particularly good grip, take care of small bumps, but nobody takes care of large ones. It turns in quite slowly, but then follows the course of the road quite neutrally. The poisonous horsefly requires attention. And that is exactly it: Because of its peculiarities, a ride on the clean and lovingly constructed retro is highly entertaining. Danger of addiction not excluded. Successful time travel.

The machine presented here is the second Retro ever built. It is currently for sale for 22,500 euros. The motorcycle is only available as a complete vehicle. In the opinion of the builder, the sale of individual components does not make sense, which is why he does not offer them individually.
