Recall Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (2019/2020)

Possible misfire due to programming error

Kawasaki has started a recall for the Ninja ZX-10R (2019 and 2020 model years) as it may misfire due to a programming error in the ECU. In the worst case, this can ignite a fire.

Loud Kawasaki the error can occur when using the quickshifter. However, the error does not occur due to a faulty quickshifter; a programming error in the engine control unit (ECU) is more responsible. Using the Quickshifter to change gears can cause misfires, which can damage the air intake valves. This can result in high temperatures in the exhaust system and melt components. In the very worst case, according to Kawasaki, this can ignite a fire

The following ZX-10R models are affected by the recall:

  • Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (2019 and 2020 model years)
  • Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R ABS (2019 and 2020 model years)
  • Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10RT ABS KRT Edition (2019 and 2020 model years)

In the workshop, the ECU is reprogrammed accordingly and various components that could be damaged by the error are checked and, if necessary, replaced. On motorcycles that have already been ridden, the air intake valves are always replaced. According to Kawasaki, the free workshop visit should take just under 1.5 hours.

German vehicle owners are also affected by the recall, according to Kawasaki. A total of 140 ninjas have to go back to the workshop in this country. Owners were informed of the recall on June 5th. Kawasaki also recommends that all owners deactivate the Quickshifter function for the time being until the callback repair is complete. The quickshifter can be switched off via the display without much effort.
