Hamburg’s most beautiful and exciting foam mile leads through the middle of urban greenery. Once a year, at the Hamburg City Park Revival.

It was not to be expected at the beginning of September. But it can never be ruled out in Hamburg. Bad weather. Real. In the paddock, the heat value discussions on Saturdays were less about spark plugs than about sweaters, and if you weren’t careful, the party tent flew away. So it shouldn’t be surprising that the potential spectators would rather hide behind the stove. No, it is no pleasure to report on a stormy, rainy city park revival. In which the drivers worried badly about their sweetheart, feared the mixture of oil binding agent and water on the track, especially at the back of the hairpin where the cars always can’t stop.

And that’s exactly why this unique motorsport revue is scheduled for two days. Because behind the dike it rarely rains for more than five or six hours in a row. Especially not on the weekend. So go back: where on Sundays at this time of the year joggers and young families otherwise flock towards the park, two large paddocks spread out. One for cars, one – the nicer one, of course, arched by deciduous trees – for motorcycles. This hierarchy probably has to do with the fact that in 1934, at the very beginning, only motorcycles and sidecars started. Four-wheelers were only allowed to play in the 38 edition. The list of prewar winners ranges from Karl Gall (BMW) to Walfried Winkler to the great Ewald Kluge (both DKW). The race started again in 1948 – on a route that was only 4.1 instead of 6.5 kilometers, and now Schorsch Meier (BMW), along with Kluge, was the only German TT winner to date. With five triumphs, Bayer is Hamburg’s record winner. 1952 came to an end after a terrible accident that left the spectators dead.

The first revival rose in 1999

Nobody wants to drive real races in the city park today, but the Hanseatic people want to preserve traditions: 1999 saw the first revival. The 1.7 kilometer long course is a little longer than a land mile and only a little shorter than a nautical mile. Dieter Braun has just rushed through the paddock curve with his 350 TZ Yamaha, and then he appears again. But that could also be due to the fact that he just won’t let it go, Tall Hendrik. A colorful and extremely interesting field unites this special class of classic racing motorcycles, and as in 1968 in one or the other 125cc World Championship round, Braun hisses towards the rare corners with MZ champion Heinz Rosner. Even at the pre-start they chatted against the noise of nervous two-stroke and barking four-stroke engines. A beautiful water-cooled Adler RS underneath, good for a German championship in the mid-50s. Or an MV Agusta 175 Squalo, famous for its tenacity in Italian national competitions. At least as seldom are the original and not quite as original sports axes, which are even congratulated on their 60th birthday in special runs.

Beyond the many bales of straw – real and unwrapped, of course, because the Hanseatic people are into tradition – the mood for a trip is gradually spreading. You stroll through the paddock in rows of four, look at a Ducati Mark 3 SS under the tight fairing or a BSA B 40 in the open Amal carburetor, ask him about the year of his pretty IFA RE (1952) and the other about the performance of his van -Veen-Kreidler (18 hp). Further ahead you have to be careful not to stumble over the removed paneling of a BMW-Kneeler team, a few meters away two beer crates replace the lifting platform. Everything is extremely relaxing, especially since the logistics are right from the toilet to the coffee shop.

It’s a racing revival!

In delicious Hamburg slang it croaks every few minutes: Achdung Foahrerloager … Then a few warriors put on determined expressions and helmets and roll to the pre-start. With a Harley Duo Glide, a BMW R 27, a green elephant from Zundapp. Moment. They’re wrong here, aren’t they? It’s a racing revival! Just don’t get upset, says the oilcloth carrier from the bale of straw next door, where else do you see these things? He is right to stay calm and enjoy. In group 2 of the street motorcycles, there are two more Munch, and indeed: The less racing-heavy part of the audience is amazed at building blocks.

Perhaps precisely because the drivers undergo a rather leisurely evenness test: There is enough time to look at the mammoth, to dream after the petite Motobi 125 Supersport or to love the busily purring Honda CB 125.

This combination with an Ariel Red Hunter engine has been on the road since 1929.

In general, what happens on the route is best characterized by stylish strolling. Which by no means means that everyone can now follow the pace in the racing classes. And that doesn’t mean there is nothing more to hear. Whereby: The noise problem is burning more and more under the nails, there seem to be some Hamburgers who have rather unhanseatic ideas of tolerance and raise the alarm because of a single weekend.

Where were we? Oh yes, now there is another racing class, and then it’s the turn of the audience favorites. Namely the teams. Since their races were finally banned from all sports broadcasts in the world, the common man naturally falls into ecstasy when slim women and wiry men casually lean out of the boat and fly low over the asphalt. Or get to grips with their driver. Exactly: where else do you see something like that? An archaic and somehow inaccessible Ariel Red Hunter tricycle shoots the bird here, but when the show ends with fierce waving to each other, everyone has won. Here and beyond the bales of straw.
