Fork, intervertebral discs, passenger and strut say thank you. Stumbled through a pothole again. Sinister hid the frost damage in the corner exit of the house route. Last year everything was – more or less – plan. It’s nice if you stay seated anyway. And now? How does the local road construction authority find out that the pavement is defective here? Call, mail, carrier pigeon or fax? An exact description of the location is missing for all of them. Or do you know all the road codes with kilometer markings by heart? Some hinterland trails are only displayed as “Street with no name” guided. The solution: an app that collects GPS data and images of the damage and forwards them to the responsible authorities. We would like to briefly introduce three apps for Otto normal users and one for municipalities.

ADAC is running!

Since March 2021, it has been possible to download an ADAC app via the Google and Apple app stores. Road damage can be reported to the ADAC when the location determination and camera use of the smartphone are released. The automobile club promises to forward the report to the responsible municipality immediately. The status of the report can be tracked in the app, and an email is sent to the sender with updates on the road damage report. Sounds good, but only works in parts of Germany (see graphic).

Italy and the potholes

The latest product for reporting damage to road surfaces comes from Italy. The Italian Association of European Consumer Aid (AIACE) had the Bucapp developed, which reports and forwards road damage using photos and GPS data. The special feature of the app: If a user reports an accident due to road damage, the AIACE provides legal assistance free of charge. The app currently only works in Italy and is not available in German app stores.

Meldoo defect reporter

Meldoo has been on the market in different versions for some time. Not only can road damage be reported with it, pollution or vandalism can also be displayed. Meldoo also provides feedback on the status of processing and works throughout Germany.

App for professionals

The Stuttgart company Vialytics goes several steps further when reporting road damage. Your system has been developed for use in municipalities. In the emergency vehicles, the road surface is scanned using a smartphone while driving, and all damage is registered and assessed. This results in a status map for the road network being traveled on. In addition, municipalities can have the security of the markings and signs assessed by the system and thus prepare legal security.

Conclusion
