Review Yamaha WR 250 X
Single cylinder of the future
With its sophisticated technology, the Yamaha WR 250 X shows the way into the future of sporty four-stroke single-cylinder. And at an acceptable price.
Aha, this roundabout comes at just the right time. Only brake gently in the slight right curve of the driveway ?? zack, bend to the left in a flash, zack again, straighten up and right out of the round. Hey, over already? It went mad. The Yamaha WR 250 X is made for moments like this. When it gets really tight and very curvy, the handling ace up your sleeve casually stabs the joker of pure performance.
The little one, which is offered in an R version (Enduro) in addition to the X version (Supermoto), initially wants to make itself heard with completely different arguments. Their magic word is technology. Borrowed directly from the crossers or competition enduros of the Yamaha off-road department. Aluminum frame and aluminum swing arm, spring elements adjustable in compression and rebound damping ?? the frame girder and the rear frame can be made of steel. Especially since the model planners added a lot more. Above all, one big goal, namely the Euro 3 requirements ?? moderate volume and low pollutant levels ?? to be combined with homogeneous performance and attractive top performance.
Engine characteristics and noise control two flaps at the same time: a vacuum-controlled intake hatch on the air filter box and an Exup valve activated by a servomotor in the catalytic converter-equipped exhaust. The injection that produces the mixture for the four-valve engine is also new. Four-valve? You read that right. After the Superbike R1 had already turned away from the former trademark of sporty Yamaha four-stroke, the five-valve cylinder head, in model year 2007, the WRX could now also usher in the trend reversal in the company’s single-cylinder range. It definitely sends two signals. First: It can also be done cheaply. Because at 6145 euros it remains a proud 2500 euros below the price of the 8645 euros competition WR. Second: Power is also possible in Euro 3 times.
A peak power of just three hp less than the WR 250 F and an impressively homogeneous power curve (see diagram) prove what modern technology can do. But first of all, other things please. Sitting casually relaxed behind the cross handlebars, the ultra-slim speedster, weighing just 137 kilograms with a full tank, can be effortlessly thrown into corners. Dilapidated country roads? No problem. The long suspension travel can cope with even the worst bumpy slopes, and with the excellent front brake, the latest of all late braking points can be set. Of course, with 32 HP the limits are drawn early. The driving style is predetermined: what counts is the speed. The throttle at the stop becomes the normal case, starting from lower speeds becomes a situation to be avoided. It doesn’t matter, you learn to live with it, you are always enthusiastic about the chic exterior and only occasionally dreams of this “what-if”. For example, if the WR-X had a 450 engine. One with 45 hp and steam from the speed cellar. And from a roundabout ?? a really big one.
