Motorcycle culture
Who wants to know what’s on the subject “Motorized two-wheeler” does not go past Glemseck 101. Here you will meet them all, the weird, bizarre and cool guys on two wheels and two legs. Welcome to Germany’s most colorful motorcycle meeting!

The last Friday evening in August. It is dawning over the former Solitude race track at the gates of Stuttgart. Dim light turns people and machines into paper cuttings, gradually revealing wonderful little weirdos. That chopper over there isn’t a Harley. But a radical conversion of a KTM LC4! In addition, a group of Englishmen park their Suzuki GSX 1400. Colorful LED lights on the flanks bathe the four-cylinder immodestly in blue factory colors.

With the long-term test 125, I follow a Boss Hoss at walking pace. Her mighty big block V8 divides the many pedestrians left and right like Moses once did in the Red Sea. Everyone stays calm and serene, relaxed: careless, but not negligent.
This is how it goes on the eighth round of Glemseck 101, probably the most colorful and varied motorcycle meeting in Germany. And this is just the beginning, one of the parking lots. Now I’m passing the dealer mile. The Triumph Beach measures a full 101 meters, err. Stand. “Beach” bar included. The sponsor does not spoil the free-and-outside festival around two wheels. Bollernd, a BSA makes its way through the crowd. Many polished aluminum or chrome-plated steel tanks shine in competition at the rendezvous of the German cafe racer scene. Not to forget hump seats, handlebar stubs and powerful exhausts.
“Our event stands for motorcycles with character”
Just like it was back then, in the Roaring Sixties, when private backyard and garage designers made their Triumphs and Nortons sportier and sleeker. Glemseck 101 wants to preserve this spirit, this spirit. Jorg explains that to me
Litzenburger with a beer: “Our event stands for motorcycles with character, for individual, minimalist conversions in every direction, whether bobber or cafe racer, scrambler or roadster.” The addiction officer of the Boblingen district organizes the meeting in his spare time together with many other helpers . “We like pure and puristic motorcycles, real driving machines,” says Jorg. “We definitely don’t have anything against Gore Tex, but we’re more into leather here.” All types on two wheels and two legs are very welcome to this motorcycle festival.
The evening ends with punk rock music from Los Skeleteros. Morning sun later illuminates all the splendor and glory. The international tuner guild is honored to show what it can do: LSL from Krefeld, Jens vom Brauck from Cologne. Urban Motor from Berlin and Fuel Motorcycles from Barcelona show cool, beguiling BMW two-valve conversions, the rolling mill from Hockenheim high-end metal. At Benders Echte, radical TR1 conversions prove the potential that Yamaha left untapped 30 years ago. Rutesheim’s motorcycle pastor Jurgen Schwarz opens the sprint races on the eighth mile on one of these heated 1000cc V-Zwos and competes against District Administrator Roland Bernhard.

… and off!!! MOTORRAD editor Thomas Schmieder gives everything in the sprint with the Louis tuning bike Honda Sevenfifty.
A matter of honor, the man of God is ahead. The name of his loaned TR1: The Trumpets of Jericho. Nomen est omen. Even 200 meters can mean a big show and can be quite sporty. I can see that for myself now. Stand as one of 32 participants at the start of the International Sprint. Together with tuners, racing drivers, journalists and other two-wheeled personalities. In the knockout system, I meet the TT warrior Conor Cummins with the Louis-Honda CB Seven fifty. Of all things. My colleague, MOTORRAD top tester Georg Jelicic, had briefed me shortly beforehand: “Keep the speed at around 5000 and drive with the clutch slipping slightly until the speed doesn’t drop, just increases.”
Works fine, get away safely. Today I’m too nervous to shift up without using the clutch, so I grab the lever when engaging the second and third. Conor Cummins mercilessly stabs into the gap on his tuning Buell XB 12. After all: It was so close that moderator Jorg asks me after returning to the start who was ahead. Pair by pair now goes on, I join the many hundreds or thousands of spectators. In the final, Jens vom Brauck defeated the racing amazon Nina Prinz on his 1100-cc Katana on his 150 kilogram lightweight, at least 100 hp Ducati Flat Red 2. Congratulation. Aren’t Guy Martin and Conor Cummins unable to cope with an eighth mile? Otherwise they are used to racing laps of 37.7 miles, a full 60.7 kilometers.
Guy Martin close enough to touch
Especially since Glemseck 101 lacks murderous speeds, insane inclines and stone walls. No, Conor Cummins laughs: “It’s not boring at all. You have to concentrate fully at the start, you hardly have time to make up for a mistake. ”And Guy Martin adds that despite (or because of?) The short distance it is“ really fun to compete here ”. Guy has an open ear for everyone, gives friendly autographs, close enough to touch. And lies calmly between two runs in the grass – next to his pretty new girlfriend. Hans A. Muth showed up, who designed the BMW R 90 S 40 years ago and the Suzuki Katana a good 30 years ago. In the former start-finish tower of the racetrack, today the exclusive clubhouse of the AMSC Leonberg, he is available to answer questions.
In the evening there are great concerts, rousing 60s beats. From an era when motorcycles were still “analog” – maybe apart from the first digital ignitions. And so the Glemseck 101 also inspires our longing for honest motorcycles, genuinely metallic machines made of steel, iron and aluminum, without plastic fraud. Of course, there are also Gold Wings and E-Glides standing around, shouldn’t be missing to round off the spectrum. But travel enduros à la R 1200 GS are not the predominant force here. Only the onset of rain thins the ranks a little. A damp night for the camping group.

Men’s toys. Wonderfully crazy Harley conversion in the style of Mattel’s Hot Wheels, just on a one-to-one scale. At this meeting everything is allowed, everything is represented.
The next morning, a noticeable number of people push through the rows with prams. The Leonbergers come to the Sunday outing. Jurgen Schwarz holds his motorcycle church service. Fritz W. Egli has to be walking around somewhere. Shit, missed it. But some of his rolling art, sorry, undercarriages, could already be admired.
Strolling along the T-shaped traders’ mile is a single source of joy. Who has what has been rebuilt and how? Many manufacturers and specialists use this platform. A melting pot of ideas, inspirations and designs.
Bruno Dotsch rolls by, specialist in beautiful Kawasaki W 650/800. Ulf Penner stands next to it. The engine tuner breathes full power into air-cooled drives. A trendy get-together. Siegbert Renz (69) comes to me on his 1936 Imperia
from the Schonbuch Nature Park. We chat about the beautiful machine from Bad Godesberg. A motorcycle festival at its finest, that doesn’t mean elitist here.
On stage, Jorg Litzenburger is interviewing Steven Hofmann, who drove 25,000 kilometers from Malaysia to Germany on his V-Strom 650. Two ears and two eyes are not enough to grasp everything.
What about the first weekend in September 2014? How about living and experiencing fine motorcycle culture again at the ninth edition of Glemseck 101? As always: stylish and classic, elegant and timeless.
