The Kawasaki Z 900 went as a “Frankenstein’s daughter” into the story. A bestseller that quickly became a legend. For the 40th birthday of the iconic Big Bike, 4,300 Z fans from all over Europe celebrated the wild bride at the big anniversary party on the Edersee.

Normally, two limousines would easily fit into the double garage. Not so with Klaus Weinrich. Kawasaki’s Z models share the space here. On the left there are two practically new Kawasaki 900 Z1 from 1973, behind it several Z 1000. A Z 900 motor is on the workbench, and the right tool hangs on the walls between Z 900 posters. Klaus Weinrich points to the original Z1 on the lifting platform: “Mondays are mechanics evening with us. This machine needs an inspection, working together is more fun, if you have the time and inclination, drop by. “

This is how it works at the Z-Stammtisch Kassel for ten years. Around 20 people form this relaxed community of interests, nobody here has anything to do with club dairy. The clique was initiated by Michael Wieder, called “Presi” by the Z friends. Although he doesn’t value the title, he can’t get rid of it. At the center of the hustle and bustle are the legendary 900 and 1000 Z models from the 1970s, but also the zeitgeist of the time. The president laughs and frankly admits: “For us young guys the world suddenly turned differently. We defied the norms, let our hair grow long, wore worn leather jackets, had funky parties and listened passionately to hard rock by AC / DC and Deep Purple. For our generation, riding a motorcycle meant breaking out of everyday life, plus an indescribable feeling of freedom, independence and a thirst for adventure. Our dream bike was the Kawa 900 Z1. Hardly any of us 50s drivers could afford it, that came later. On the Z’s today we beam ourselves back to this wild and emotional time on our trips and at Z-meetings. “

The Z-Stammtisch has been very active since 2009 at the Technorama in Kassel. With their classic exhibition, the active enthusiasts are among the crowd pullers. There is shown, explained and gasoline is discussed. Sometimes, however, plans are also made. So in February 2011, when the Kassel troop discussed with Peter Krauss. The capo of Z-Club-Germany had the idea for the anniversary party for the upcoming 40-year-old of Z1 in 2012. Together, they continued to tighten the thread, and found the right location with the “Zundstoff” at the Edersee to hold such a big party there. What followed after that turned out to be a show of strength for Peter Krauss. Numerous Z-round tables and European Z-Clubs had to be contacted and invited. In personal visits abroad as well as in forums there was intensive advertising, after all it was supposed to be a mega party for the Z-scene from all over Europe.

On the second weekend in July the time had finally come when the asphalt glowed at the explosive at the “European Kawasaki Z-Anniversary Party”. The Edersee is located in the middle of Germany and therefore also central for the European Z fans. For the Kassel troop, however, it is more of a camping holiday around the corner: “The 40-year-old Z-Meeting is a home game for us. Equipped with everything that makes a long weekend fun and pleasant, we pitched our tents on Thursday. “

Award ceremony: 21 trophies were awarded at the award ceremony.

In addition to numerous German round tables, Z delegations from Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria and Scandinavia had come. Even visitors from Croatia and Japan were seen. The camp ground was like a Z special exhibition. While the original 900 and 1000 Z Kawas from 1973 to 1980 were the focus here, numerous idiosyncratic conversions attracted attention. The counters showed no reservations with any of the successor models up to the current 1000 series. With a stunt show, test drives with the latest Kawa models, rocky live music, bike awards and a dealer mile with a good 20 exhibitors, the program left little to be desired. Roland Lenden, a proven Z expert, sums it up: “It is important for us to maintain old acquaintances, to make new contacts and, above all, to celebrate the anniversary with our customers.”

Many encounters were also exciting. For example the one with Anton “Kawa-Toni” Wolf. As early as 1966 he was a Kawasaki dealer for Neckermann in Seligenstadt, selling the first 650cc W1 four-stroke twins. When Detlev Louis took over the import in 1968, Wolf remained loyal to the brand. In November 1972 he picked up the first Z1 himself in Hamburg – on the move, of course.

Kawasaki press chief Andi Seiler is impressed: “The enthusiasm for the classic Z series is unbroken. In no other Kawa model are yesterday and today so close together. In the current Z 1000 The genes of the Z1 from 1972 are dormant. “

Initiator and organizer Peter Krauss is also satisfied: “With 4300 visitors and 1200 machines, all expectations were exceeded by far. The Z1 era and hard rock shaped our generation in the 1970s. Frankenstein’s daughter is alive, and the scene is livelier today than ever. “
