If the speedometer or tachometer refuse to work, they hit the metal.

If the speedometer or tachometer refuse to work, they hit the metal.

Provided that the speedometer is driven mechanically, the first check of the speedometer cable applies. Ideally, only the union nut has loosened on the instrument. If the fluctuating or even completely unusual display has another reason, the shaft must be removed. The output takes place on the front or rear wheel or on the gearbox (BMW).

It is easy to check whether a speedometer cable is flawed: with one hand you hold the cover tightly, with the other you turn the core. It must turn easily and the other end must turn with it. Replacement shafts for almost all common machines are available for ten to 30 marks, for example from Gericke, Gotz or Louis.

If the cause of the failure lies inside the instrument, only opening it helps. Hobbyists can still do this on their own, but when the front ring is removed, it is guaranteed to tear. Renewed flanging during later assembly does not hold, the gluing is a not very elegant solution. The matter is a case for the specialist, more precisely the precision mechanic of the nearest speedometer service. The head office of VDO-Kienzle Service und Vertriebs GmbH (phone 0 69/75 86-0) reveals addresses, for example..

The specialist takes the instrument apart completely, cleans it thoroughly and reassembles it with a new front ring. That alone is enough for most instruments to make them functional again. If parts are actually worn out, it is usually the slide bearing of the main axis or the spring that keeps the pointer in check. Replacement is no problem for the well-stocked speedometer services. The hairiest job is sealing, because nothing works without a flanging machine. After the work is done, the instrument is calibrated, that is, the display accuracy is checked. The time required for a complete overhaul is between half an hour and an hour. In the worst case, it makes 300 marks with materials and VAT.

Much cheaper is the removal of fall marks or a cosmetic intervention for the purpose of mounting the chrome ring. Replacing the glass and front ring of a round instrument costs around 130 marks. It is significantly more expensive for angular instruments, because glass and ring are almost never available as spare parts, but with one-off production, even the problem children can be given a flawless appearance again. The first address for cases of hardship is the KA-JA Tachodienst (phone 0 91 34/3 68). The Mend company (phone 07 21/57 35 05, Andreas Schifferdecker) also helps, especially with vintage cars. WSM (phone 0 61 51/89 12 92) is a good tip for electronic instruments, design work and scale extensions. There is also a contact person for the Motometer instruments of all BMWs: Imak (phone 07 11/9 51 94 40).

Speedometer: The repair of such a sensitive device is usually a matter for a specialist. At least when the apparatus has to be opened.
