Second-hand advice: 125cc motorcycles
Small bikes, great fun and all that at reasonable prices
No, that’s not a 1000 that drives there. But even with 15 hp and less, driving can be really fun, and this does not only apply to young beginners. The best thing about 125cc fun is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot.

125cc are also fun in the mountains.
Hurray, something is happening! On the 125cc second-hand market anyway, but about that in a moment. First of all, a completely different topic: the driver’s license. Your youngster, take care, because it will soon be really exciting. On January 19, 2013, the annoying 80 km / h limit for young people will drop, regardless of the date on which the driver’s license was issued. Even 16-year-olds no longer have to stick miserably behind every truck with their 125cc machines, which are allowed to produce a maximum of 15 hp. Tab of the bestseller shown in the picture above Yamaha YZF-R 125 can then even dare longer motorway journeys with a top speed of around 120 km / h. Finally swim normally in traffic, finally grown up! And after two years of light motorcycles (A1 driving license), all you need to do to acquire the new A2 driving license (motorcycles up to 48 hp) is a practical test. So the bottom line is that the “apprenticeship years” on the 125cc are more worthwhile. But even those who had their car folder in their hand before April 1, 1980, can cruise around with 15 HP and 125 cubic meters and – new from 2013 – switch to a 48 HP bike after passing their driving test. On motorized two-wheelers inexperienced or untrained “oldies”, however, it is advisable to arrange a trial period yourself before switching to a large motorcycle. Tip: get a cheap 125cc now (maybe even together with the youngsters), drive a lot, have a lot of fun and gain security – only then change.
Now to the used market: Whether young or old, everyone can find something! Especially for the four-stroke models, the second-hand range has been revitalized in recent years. Many two-stroke engines are saying goodbye to the market because they are simply no longer up-to-date with their exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. Unfortunately for the dealers, some manufacturers missed the 125cc development a bit (e.g. Kawasaki and Suzuki) and offer only a few attractive models. Honda and Yamaha on the other hand, their small sports buzzers CBR and YZF landed a direct hit on the sales floor.

The two-stroke squad does not have to give up yet, however, has with the old star Aprilia RS 125 still a hot iron in the fire. In general, young motorcyclists prefer to look at sports goods, including supermotos and enduros. It is interesting that suppliers of Chinese goods such as Kreidler, who are often only offered for sale at scooter dealers, jump on this bandwagon, apparently with some success. The fact is that ex-exotic bikes now also represent a real alternative to the established Japanese machines on the 125cc second-hand market as new bikes.
The genre that has become almost invisible in recent years, on the other hand, are choppers and cruisers. With good care (not uncommon, as older people like to move these 125 cc), they are recommended as great used ones. In any case, the search is worthwhile. In times of rising gasoline prices and increasing parking space shortages in cities, economical and reliable all-rounders like a Honda Varadero or Yamaha YBR are gaining popularity even with adult drivers, because spare parts are cheap and insurance and tax combined are less than 100 euros. Hooray, that doesn’t hurt your wallet much!

Aprilia RS 125.
The classy one wins the prize for the beauty queen Aprilia on. Valuable and pretty equipment and processing details delight the eye in many places: the polished frame, the fine swing arm, Mamma mia, che bella! Italian racing flair also emerges when driving. Two-stroke engines are actually no longer up-to-date these days, but what the heck – such a poison dwarf is still fun, because the response behavior is more spontaneous compared to four-stroke engines. The brakes grip perfectly, the stiff aluminum bridge frame and wide tire formats ensure a good road holding when the tap is pulled. Racetrack action possible – it’s logical that this goes down well with the next generation of motorcyclists. Somewhat neat, no more than five years old models with only one previous owner are rarely offered for less than 2500 euros, and in addition to the purchase, the running costs for this piece of sports equipment are rather off-putting compared to other 125s for bargain hunters.
plus
- Chassis super sporty and very stable;
- Braking performance excellent;
- Acceleration and top speed first class
minus
- Suitability for everyday use very limited;
- Maintenance costs well above the class average (typical for two-stroke engines: overall high fuel-oil consumption)
Data (model year 2008):
Water-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine, 125 cm³, one balancer shaft, 11 kW (15 HP) at 8500 rpm, 13 Nm at 8000 rpm, aluminum bridge frame, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm made of aluminum, 110/70 ZR 17 tires, 150/60 ZR 17, full tank weight 141 kg, load 176 kg, tank capacity / reserve 14 / 3.5 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 118 km / h, consumption 4.5 l / 100 km (country road), theor Range 310 km
Honda CBR 125 R.
Aprilia
Honda CBR 125 R year 2004.
It turned out to be a godsend for the 125cc scene. Built in Thailand and primarily intended for the Asian market, it also made a real success in this country after its debut in 2004: around 25,000 units were registered. The simple design with inexpensive add-on parts, but overall very solid quality and workmanship, inspires confidence in a long motorcycle life and is easy on the wallet. In 2007 the CBR received an injection and a new fairing, the ultra-manageable handling and the remarkable reliability of the downright lightweight did not change. Well-kept used cars with only one previous owner and less than 20,000 kilometers can be found for around 1,000 euros.
plus
- Consumption very low;
- Spare parts cheap;
- Workshop network large;
- Weight low, therefore handy;
- Four-stroke performance balanced;
- Price-performance ratio is also right as used, cheaply available
minus
- Ergonomics unsuitable for drivers from 1.80 meters;
- Tire dimensions very narrow
Data (model year 2008):
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 125 cm³, two valves per cylinder, 10 kW (14 HP) at 10000 / min, 11 Nm at 8250 / min, steel bridge frame, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm made of steel, tires 80 / 90-17, 100 / 80-17, weight with a full tank of 124 kg, load 180 kg, tank capacity 10 liters, seat height 790 mm, top speed 115 km / h, consumption 2.6 l / 100 km (country road), theoretical range 385 km
Yamaha YZF 125 R.
Yamaha YZF-R 125
Yamaha YZF-R 125.
It can be that simple. Take the sports flagship from your own program – at Yamaha it is the R1 -, lean the 125cc scion very close in terms of design, ideally give it good driving performance, in other words: the fully permitted 15 hp as well as crisp brakes, wide tires and a stable chassis – and the bestseller is ready. So it was in 2008 with the then newcomer YZF-R 125, who really stirred up the market. The aggressive appearance, the steep rear frame and the best-in-class four-stroke engine, which keeps the slowly dying two-stroke competition in check – all of this impresses young motorcycle beginners. And their fathers too, who often like to help finance the new machine, which costs almost 4,000 euros. Second hand, good and well-kept specimens are hardly available for less than 2000 euros, although the range is huge. But so is the demand.
plus
- The engine is lively, with the best performance in its class;
- Durability very good, easily passed the MOTORRAD endurance test (25,000 kilometers);
- Fuel consumption low;
- Brakes and chassis very strong
minus
- Chain wear quite high;
- Brake pads have to be replaced relatively often
Data (model year 2008):
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 125 cm³, four valves per cylinder, 11 kW (15 HP) at 9000 / min, 12 Nm at 8000 / min, bridge frame made of steel, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm made of aluminum, tires 110 / 80-17, 130 / 70-17, weight with a full tank of 141 kg, load 182 kg, tank capacity / reserve 13.8 / 1.2 liters, seat height 830 mm, maximum speed 119 km / h, consumption 2.6 l / 100 km (country road), theoretical Range 460 km
Honda Varadero 125
Honda Varadero 125
Honda Varadero 125.
For other classmates, possibly still two-stroke, an age of over ten years and a mileage of over 30,000 kilometers would be an obstacle to buying. The risk of trapping a construction site is too great. The small Varadero is different: the 125 cc appears like an adult mid-range model, also offers tall and heavy drivers the feeling of not sitting on a moped, and the water-cooled V2 four-stroke engine is also extremely durable. The mature motorcycle feeling makes this machine interesting for owners of a car driver’s license before April 1980, especially if the machine is to be shared with a son or daughter. The 15 hp struggle a little with the machine weighing almost 170 kilos with a full tank – you shouldn’t expect brisk driving dynamics. Good second-hand offers only around 2500 euros.
plus
- Workmanship and reliability extremely high compared to the 125 series;
- high mileage (over 30,000 kilometers) with good care no problem;
- Ergonomics also suitable for drivers over 1.85 meters
minus
- Second-hand prices for older machines are also quite high;
- Braking performance rather mediocre
Data (model year 2002):
Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke 90-degree V-engine, 125 cm³, two valves per cylinder, 11 kW (15 HP) at 11000 / min, 11 Nm at 9000 / min, double loop frame made of steel, telescopic fork, two-arm swing arm made of steel , Tires 100 / 90-18, 130 / 80-17, dry weight 149 kg, load 198 kg, tank capacity / reserve 17.5 / 2 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 110 km / h, consumption 3.8 l / 100 km (country road), theoretical range 460 km
Kreidler 125 DD
Artist
Kreidler Supermoto 125 DD.
By name Kreidler Many motorcyclists still reminisce about blissful moped times. Younger-here-and-now-buyers have little to do with this nostalgia; something completely different is interesting for them: the price. Those interested in DD do not care that the machine is not manufactured in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart, as it was in the past, but in China, knowing full well that 125 cc new goods just over 2000 euros can hardly come from a German forge. The nifty and very stable Supermoto machine (from 2008) can be found second-hand for as little as 1000 euros. The single-cylinder, which is largely identical to the engine of the Suzuki DR 125, hardly makes any complaints, but with a lame 11 HP it is a bit underpowered for the vehicle genre.
plus
- Braking hard;
- Chassis stable and surprisingly confident;
- Equipment extensive;
- Purchase cheap
minus
- Driving performance in class comparison rather below average;
- Payload of only around 150 kilos is rather modest
Data (model year 2009):
Air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 125 cm³, two valves per cylinder, 8.4 kW (11.4 HP) at 9500 / min, 9.8 Nm at 8000 / min, double loop frame made of steel, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm made of steel , Tires 110 / 70-17, 130 / 70-17, weight with a full tank 131 kg, load 152 kg, tank capacity 10.5 liters, seat height 870 mm, top speed 101 km / h, consumption 3.1 l / 100 km ( Country road), theoretical range 340 km
Yamaha YBR 125
Yamaha YBR 125.
Would you like a little less? The petite naked bike doesn’t exactly look beguiling, it comes across as a bit puny to put it casually. This shouldn’t bother beginners, however, because the prices for good second-hand YBRs are also measly (decent offers for less than 1000 euros), as are the maintenance costs and fuel consumption. And the machine that has been available since 2005 (injection from 2007) is used in large numbers and runs well. Only two and a half quintals can be thrown back and forth stress-free and lively in the city and on country roads. With the ample payload, a lot of luggage fits on this tried and tested 10 HP pack animal, which is used thousands of times as a family mobile in Asia. Helpful on tour: the practical luggage rack and the very spacious bench with an astonishingly high level of comfort on long journeys. On expressways, however, you feel a bit out of place with the YBR – Tempo 100 can only be cracked downhill or with a tailwind.
plus
- Consumption and range sensationally good;
- Technology mature and reliable;
- Large and diverse range of used items,
- overall low price level
minus
- Rear drum brake rather slack;
- Top speed low,
- Motorway stages very annoying
Data (model year 2009):
Air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 125 cm³, two valves per cylinder, 7.5 kW (10 HP) at 7800 / min, 10 Nm at 6000 / min, single-loop frame made of steel, upside-down fork, two-arm swing arm made of steel, tires 2.75- 18, 90 / 90-18, weight with a full tank of 125 kg, load approx. 200 kg, tank capacity 13 liters, seat height 780 mm, top speed 97 km / h, consumption 2.6 l / 100 km (country road), theoretical range 500 km
