High speed at a low budget rate. In this used advice we have put together fascinating material. Super bikes as strong as a bear, hot design queens and tough thoroughbred racers for the bargain hunters among the hunched over.

Jorg Lohse

08/30/2007

Lighter, stronger, faster – that’s the Dikat in the super sports segment. Anyone who is not at the forefront is thrown out, despised, ridiculed and deported. The business of sport is a cruel one. Really? That may be the case for buyers of cutting-edge superbikes. You stand at the dealer, leaf around 13,000 euros on the counter and take the brand new high-speed grenade with you. She is undoubtedly the king of the ring at this very moment – no other slams the rubber more vehemently on the asphalt. Until the competition pushes their update into the store.

And then all the signs have shifted again. It’s a bit like in the computer business: What, are you still working with version 2.0.6.2? 2.0.6.2b is worlds better – you ignoramus! The prospect of a used vehicle sees things in a much more relaxed manner. He does not look at the super sports brigade from the perspective of current sprint times, but rather evaluates endurance and stamina:

Which motorcycle buckles when lapping, which one also crosses the finish line in 17th place with its head held high? In this used advice, we approached the sports motorcycles with a price magnifier and put together twelve types that can be got for 5000 euros. The spectrum is enormous: The characterful sports boxer from BMW is just as much a part of it as the small design icon Ducati 748 or a toxic 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R, which is hardly inferior to the current 600 super sports league.

useful information

The strengths and weaknesses as well as the used range of the respective machines are analyzed on the following pages. In addition, the technical data and the prices of the Schwacke list including the corresponding mileage can be found for each model. However, in most models, the latter do not match reality: the actual driving performance is usually 30 percent lower. The Schwacke list assumes an annual mileage of between 8,500 and 10,000 kilometers. Distances between 4,000 and 6,000 kilometers, on the other hand, appear much more practical.

Here as a rough guide to the corresponding price correction: For every 10,000 kilometers that are less on the clock, you should add around 7.5 percent to the list price. And with an – admittedly rather rare – additional mileage per 10,000 kilometers, around ten percent must be deducted from the price. Everything ready? Chin strap lashed down? Then it’s now: on your marks, set, loooos…

Sightseeing tips

Buyers should pay the greatest attention to fall marks when viewing. These can often be found on the housing cover, swing arm, fork or handlebar ends. Cracks and scratch marks in the cladding can also confirm suspicions that the machine has ever made contact with the floor. Larger cladding modifications or special paintwork should also be treated with caution. This allows major accident damage to be concealed. Another important control point are the bearing points (steering head, swing arm, lever and wheel bearings). In order to track down oil leaks or noticeable running noises, the test drive should be at least 20 kilometers. In doing so, check whether the motorcycle is running smoothly in a straight line. It is good if a second person follows behind and looks for suspicious blue smoke from the exhaust. If you have the time, you should have a compression measurement made.

Tires without a breakdown

Even if some of the sports bikes presented here have almost a decade under their belt – in terms of driving dynamics, they are far from being scrapped. But on the contrary. Because handling and cornering speed depend heavily on the tires. With the latest tire technology, new accents can be set in terms of maneuverability, steering precision or cornering stability. The majority of the motorcycles in this used overview are in the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17, a common size for which new rubber compounds are offered almost every year. In the latest MOTORRAD sports tire test on a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (issue 12/2007), the Metzeler Sportec M3 and the Michelin Pilot Power were particularly convincing.

Accessory rear silencer

An accessory rear silencer is a good thing for many super athletes on offer. In fact, you can usually reduce the weight by a few kilos. In terms of performance, however, this extra does not bring much. Horsepower growth is rare and when it does, it is mostly limited to peak performance. In the mid-speed range, which is often used, however, losses are usually recorded. Depending on the benefit, those interested in buying can immediately search for machines that have been optimized to meet their needs. For example, those that increase ergonomics and suitability for everyday use via higher-mounted handlebars, adjustable footrest systems or high fairing windows. Also recommended: ask the seller about his experience with different brake pads for the model. Offers with a completely rebuilt chassis, on the other hand, are only for cracks.

Kawasaki ZX-6R

Year of construction 2003/2004

With her 2003 debut postponed Kawasaki the relations in the supersport camp. What seemed tough and sporty up until then – measured against the 2003 edition of the little ninja – suddenly seems soft and suitable for touring. This 600, with injection for the first time, only really feels at home on the racetrack. For the more leisurely country road lap, a softer suspension setup and a more relaxed seating position would definitely be desirable. The engine, which has been increased to 636 cm3, can show its advantages precisely there. Because in the middle speed range, the Kawa has up to ten hp more to offer than the competition. All that remains is the addictive rumble of the fours, to forget the rock-hard blows that maltreat the bastard. The ZX-6R has nothing to offer comfort. Delicious details like the radially bolted brake calipers, on the other hand, do.

Conclusion
Not only the look of the ninja has been sharpened for the 2003/2004 model year. Their complete layout is mercilessly aimed at racing and circuit. There the 600 with the increased displacement can get a lot of praise and recognition. On the other hand, this kawa is simply too hard for everyday occurrences.

+ Powerful engine
+ Addictive sound
+ Ready to race
– No everyday comfort
– tendency to hit the handlebars
– Tachometer difficult to read

Honda Fireblade

Year of construction 2000/200

When the motorcycle tester first came into contact with the 2000 edition of the Blade, he gave a tight »wow«. The reason: On the scales, Honda’s fire blade leveled off at 202 kilograms when fully fueled. This means that the big superbike is hardly heavier than a 600cc super sports bike. Further facts about the Blade: Injection, regulated catalytic converter and finally the conversion of the front section – away from the 16-inch front wheel with tilting steering behavior and lack of accuracy to the problem-free 17-inch model, which gives the 900 new handiness and neutrality. What has remained are traits that have always looked good on the Honda: As usual, it is solid and reliable, regardless of whether you brake or accelerate. The model with the code SC-44 can also convince on the racetrack thanks to the great suspension set-up, great brakes and powerful engine. Their drawback: the tendency to hit the handlebars when accelerating hard. Unfortunately, the Blade lacks a sensitive steering damper.

Conclusion
With the 2000 update of the superbike, Honda has put together a sports package that absolutely lives up to the tradition of the Fireblade. The bottom line is that it guarantees stress-free driving fun. In terms of reliability, too, the super-sporty 900 is on the familiar Honda paths.
Strengths and weaknesses
+ Racer with everyday quality
+ Regulated catalyst
+ Great draft
– High consumption
– tendency to hit the handlebars
– Strong vibrations

Suzuki GSX-R 600

Year of construction 2003/2004

That is how fast-paced the super sports regiment is. The GSX-R celebrated its glorious debut in this version in 2000, three years later the small Suzuki is mercilessly passed on by the brand new competitors Honda CBR 600 RR and Kawasaki ZX-6R. The boys are a whole lot wilder, and Suzi has a hard time keeping up. In terms of engine performance and suitability for everyday use, it doesn’t need to hide. The chassis is tight enough to bend hard around the corner, but at the same time offers enough comfort for normal motorcycle life. Only the rough running engine and the hesitantly responding brakes disturb the otherwise good overall impression. When visiting, it is essential to look out for tracks that point to tough racing.

Conclusion
Suzuki’s 600 from 2003 and 2004 is well hung, but it’s still too good to hang up completely. All in all, the GSX-R still has enough quality to put together a sporty package for its racetrack and home run riders.

Strengths and weaknesses
+ Light weight
+ Good chassis set-up
+ Steering damper
– Bad brake metering
– Rough engine running
– Moderate draft

Ducati 748

Year of construction 1999/2000

Beautiful from all perspectives. What applies to the Ducati 916 can also claim to the same extent for the small sister model 748. Even the first contact makes it clear: Pure racing theory is represented here. If you take a seat on it, you have to be prepared for three things: butt up, head down and all the weight in the world on your wrists. Even the standard 748 is a thoroughbred racer. Relaxed country road wings are not her thing. Experts certify the Desmo-Twin’s stability and lean angle behavior of a 250cc GP motorcycle. What is no longer comfortable on the country road comes into its own on the racetrack. A first-class, appealing chassis that circles around the corner with the appropriate driving technique. Like the 916, the 748 is a real enthusiast’s vehicle. It is offered in very good condition and has hardly any kilometers on the clock. Model variants such as the 748 S with adjustable steering head or 748 R (Ohlins chassis) cost around 1000 euros more.

Conclusion
A fascinating bike. On board: emotions of all kinds. Generates a pleasant tingling sensation when you see it, makes your heart beat until it stops during the journey. But this fun has to be fought for with hard work. The Duc is stubborn, unwieldy and uncompromising. That works on fast racetracks, but not on country roads.
Strengths and weaknesses
+ Great design
+ Beguiling sound
+ Real racing qualities
– Stubborn and unwieldy
– Uncomfortable sitting posture
– Not a highway vehicle

Technical specifications
New price 1999: 11422 euros

Ducati 900 SS

Year of construction 2000/2001

With the appearance of the 916, Ducati’s SS series was suddenly sidelined. But whoever concludes that 900 pp suddenly become a lazy load donkey is wrong. Because the 79 hp two-valve Desmo engine still kindles a bright fire in the hut. Without tumbling into deep holes, the Duc pulls out of switchbacks with joyful airbox pipes. The thrust ends at 8000 rpm. Little trick for dynamics: A rear lifted above the Ohlins shock absorber makes it a bit more manageable without compromising stability. Only the low-mounted steering stubs require a high level of suffering and are not for long-distance pilots.

Conclusion
The injection version of the 900 SS (in the range since 1998) is fine-tuned. Without a murmur, the Duc climbs into the speed cellar and fires V2 volleys with fervor. Technically, it is solid without appearing particularly agile. Comfort-spoiled natures are better off staying away from the Twin.

Strengthen
and weaknesses
+ V2 with a wide performance range
+ Solid technology
+ Nicely processed
– Low-mounted steering stubs
– Blunt brakes
– High maintenance costs

Honda VTR 1000 F.

Year of construction 2003/2004

The VTR is not in an easy position, as it has to compete against Ducatis full of character in the super sporty two-cylinder segment. And the cultivated Japan twin could not really assert itself. It’s a shame, because the 1000 series is extremely reliable and at the same time has the necessary temperament that you would expect from a V-Twin. In the course of a major model update, the VTR 2001 has now improved consumption values and with a larger tank, new engine tuning, secondary air system and higher-positioned handlebar halves are significantly more practical. The offer shows very well-maintained machines.

Conclusion
No wolf, but no sheep’s clothing either. The VTR offers rock-solid two-cylinder charm in well-known Honda perfection. That may seem too smooth to the typical two-cylinder clientele. For sporty bargain hunters, on the other hand, the 1000 is a worthwhile object – including a comfortably grumpy V2 orchestra.

Strengthen
and weaknesses
+ Powerful engine
+ Technically mature
+ Easily manageable
– Choke on the carburetor
– High consumption
– Fade braking system
Technical specifications
New price 2003: 9790 euros

Suzuki GSX-R 750

Year of construction 2001/2002

A 750? In a world where the full liter is the measure of all things super sports? But Suzuki’s Dreiviertelele is anything but a dusty relic from old times. The new edition of the mid-size Gixxer from 2000 doesn’t need to hide. At a top speed of 278 km / h, many competitors disappear in the rearview mirror, 144 measured horsepower (motorcycle 7/2000) accelerate the 750 from zero to 200 km / h in a slim 8.1 seconds. The Suzi hums calmly like a big one across the country and can delete the word “handlebar slap” by means of a standard hydraulic damper. The GSX-R 750 also impressed in MOTORRAD’s 50,000-kilometer long-distance test.

Conclusion
A supersport bike straight out of a picture book. A powerful engine, packaged in a feather-light and stable chassis. Compact, but not cramped, you take a seat on the 750. Racing can be so comfortable.

Strengthen
and weaknesses
+ Agile engine
+ Light weight
+ Ultra stable chassis
– vibrations
– Tough steering damper in cold weather
– Slightly blunt brake

Aprilia RSV Mille

Year of construction 1999/2000

The Mille got off to an excellent start right away. At its premiere, the V-Twin had an impressive 118 hp and was used in a chassis that can boast a high level of reliability. The MOTORRAD endurance test only documents small weaknesses – very respectable for a completely new design. The first generation of models is already highly valued by their drivers. The engine does not yet shine with the sophistication that has characterized it since its facelift in 2001. To do this, the Mille can be circled neutrally and precisely through tight hairpin bends and long, fast bends. The brake system, which can only be dosed moderately, can be effectively refined with accessory pads (Brembo, Lucas).

Conclusion
The Ur-Mille is popular – whether on the racetrack or on the house slope. In addition, it is much cheaper than a Ducati from the same period. And as a real Italo bike, it is much more full of character than the Japanese competitor VTR 1000 from Honda.

Strengthen
and weaknesses
+ Precise landing gear
+ High quality equipment

– controllability of the braking system
– chain whips

BMW R 1100 S.

Year of construction 2000/2001

Need a boxer that can take on the R 90 S «- this could be the development contract for the BMW engineers in the run-up to the R 1100 S. have rang. The fact is: The Munich-based company returned to the racetrack with the sports boxer. However, they wisely stayed to themselves and only thundered over the infield of the MotoGP races as a support group as part of the »Boxer Cup«. Because the 1100 is not very suitable for real time filing with Italian or even Japanese competitors. Although the model series with the 98 hp four-valve boxer engine, which appeared in 1998, is considered potent, the S, when fully fueled, scratches the five-hundredweight mark despite its light sports suspension. Flattwin fans therefore appreciate its all-round qualities more. This includes the clean cardan drive, a G-Kat and the ABS (available as an extra). Seen in this way, the 1100 was somehow in pole position.

Conclusion
Despite the weight handicap: The 247-kilo load pushes forward with good taste. The S offers a comfortable space for a sports motorcycle and is one step ahead on poor roads. But handiness is not their strength.

Strengths and weaknesses
+ Powerful boxer engine
+ ABS available
+ Offers with many extras
– High weight
– Little feeling for the front wheel
– Noisy gearbox

Yamaha YZF-R1

Year of construction 2000/2001

The millennium version of the superbike puts them all in the bag in terms of displacement. Because direct competition like Fireblade and Neuner-Ninja were still operating at the 900cc displacement mark at the time. Yamaha sent the R1 into the race already in 1998, thus securing the pull-through crown: where others have to shift, the Ypse has long since hit the throttle. Since 2000, the R1 (internal code RN 04) has been much smoother on the gas, load change behavior and throttle response are exemplary. The chassis is sovereign, but is not particularly handy. In addition, like its competitors from this period, the R1 tends to flap its handlebars. Because a corresponding damper is missing – still.
Conclusion
There is no substitute for displacement, or …? The R1 shows that the pole position can be conquered with the 1000 engine. But a small handling deficit negates this advantage. Unfortunately, the brakes don’t have the bite of the 1998 model.

Strengths and weaknesses
+ Stable motor
+ Brute draft
+ Stable chassis
– Toothless brake
– tendency to hit the handlebars
– Sluggish handling

In reality, however, the trade with the second R1 edition starts at € 1,000 for Schwacke. Many models are advertised in top condition. Heavily rebuilt or modified machines tend to be the exception on the Yamaha Superbike. The mileage fluctuates between 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers.

BMW K 1200 RS

Year of construction 1998/1999

Tech freaks find the old one K 1200 RS still irresistible, while skeptics have always criticized the high weight and oversupply of complex technology. In fact, the »flying brick« is miles away from the filigree lightness of Japanese athletes. That is why the K is valued more as a perfect and at the same time handy travel device. The creamy candy of the fast Bajuwarin is the extraordinary elasticity of the long-stroke engine. MOTORRAD donated a 100,000-kilometer long-distance test to the 1200, which it passed very reliably. Prospective buyers should take a detailed test drive to find out whether they can handle the ergonomics on the K..

Conclusion
The K with the V mark: sensible equipment, damn long-distance suitable, consumes a lot of oil, comparatively expensive. A techno bike that doesn’t look out of date even a decade after its debut.

Strengthen
and weaknesses
+ Fast travel machine
+ Elastic motor
+ ABS available
– High weight
– High oil consumption
– Oil refilling cumbersome

Triumph Daytona 955i

Year of construction 2000/2001

The second edition of the Daytona was launched in 1997 as the T 595. Two years later, as part of a minor facelift, it was renamed the 955i. The Triple was able to put itself in the limelight with a sleek, appealing engine and light aluminum chassis plus a distinctive single-sided swing arm. Accompanied by a hoarse, hissing melange of sound, the Daytona rushes with glee over country roads of all stripes. Balance in the MOTORRAD long-distance test: despite clear running tracks, everything was OK. You saw more red when it came to comfort: the radiated engine heat caused annoying hot flashes and sweats for the driver even on cold days.

Conclusion
For fans of the brand, a successful mix of Honda Fireblade and Ducati 916, as it combines problem-free Japanese driving behavior with an Italian look. Unmistakable: the chirping of the triple that always gives you goose bumps.

and weaknesses

+ Perfect load change behavior
– The engine heats up the seat and tank
