Suzuki GSX 1400

“We can do it differently!”, Suzuki said to himself in mid-2001. Really niche, really valuable and not really cheap at all. The result was a wonderful boom.

The world of high-displacement Japanese bare-bones was clearly structured up to the summer of 2001: Yamaha was the top dog with the XJR 1300, Honda struggled (mostly in vain) with the technocratic X-Eleven, and Suzuki was very successful with the 1200 bandit. Kawasaki was new to the business with the ZRX 1200, but only managed correct numbers with the half-wired S version. Well, and then something happened that the supposed discounter Suzuki could hardly have expected: The GSX 1400 showed the assembled competition very impressively that only one thing counts on the pitch: torque! Lots of torque, preferably between 2500 and 6000 rpm, always around 120 Nm. This was not ensured by an inflated Bandit engine, but by a beautiful new design that was generously supplied with regular gasoline by an injection system.

The rather average 106 HP were hardly of any interest. The more decisive factor was this perfect throttle response, this rubber band effect that caused a huge grin when the driver was able to do everything and anything in the last gear (which was actually far too long). In addition, there was a posh workmanship, neatly coordinated spring elements, very good six-piston brakes and two excellent seats. This famous package cost more than 1300 euros more than a 1200 bandit and was even a bit more expensive than the direct competition. Perhaps that was why so many potential customers had the GSX 1400 didn’t even get on the screen. But anyone who has ever been allowed to drive it knows very well that it is absolutely worth the money.

sightseeing

The lavishly dimensioned mechanics of the GSX 1400 are never really required, so the (engine) wear and tear of used specimens is correspondingly pleasing. The typical GSX 1400 previous owner also belongs to the category “seasoned motorcyclist”, youthful arrogance is therefore not a wear factor. The model years 2001 and 2002 occasionally struggled with leaky struts, but Suzuki usually exchanged them free of charge – the subject should be over by now. The exhaust cannon barrel of the 2005 and 2006 years was often exchanged for a much nicer and lighter accessory part, please ensure that it is approved. A worn 190 rear tire causes a significant deterioration in driving behavior and can be part of price negotiations. Important for the years of construction 2005 and 2006: There was a recall campaign here. the “Replacement of the antenna unit of the immobilizer” concerned the chassis numbers 111100112804 to 111100114964 (GSX1400K5) and 111100114966 to 111100116476 (GSX1400K6).

Handling? Best – with a good tire profile

The GSX 1400 is not only very stable in price for Suzuki standards. Your owners know exactly what they’re doing “Thick” have and only part with it – if at all – at astonishingly official rates. For less than 4,000 euros, there are only a few commercial cucumbers with a high mileage. In contrast to the Bandit sister, there are only a few radical conversions on offer; the GSX remains mostly original, technical changes are limited to handlebars, indicators and the exhaust (from 2005). Small cockpit windows and luggage systems are also popular attachments. The majority of the offer is well maintained, very often first-hand and between 5000 and 6000 euros. For almost new 2005 and 2006 models with less than 5000 kilometers, dealers sometimes call over 7000. The air is getting very thin in this price region, but the seller’s patience is usually rewarded. The GSX 1400 is worth it!
