For the last two years of construction (2005/2006) it was converted to four-in-one – with an enormously long individual exhaust. Fortunately, there are nicer aftermarket items.

It still looked pretty there: the two rear silencers harmonize well with the brawny design of the 1400s. Available up to and including year of construction 2004.

Naked bike with good travel qualities

Makes pressure without end and still totally de-stresses. A contradiction? No, and theorists belies the fat Suzuki GSX 1400: four-cylinder engines can not only turn speed, but also from the cellar.

Thorsten Dentges

02/18/2016

It’s been a couple of years since the author drove with just such a Suzuki GSX 1400 for a weekend in Saint-Tropez in the south of France. Motorway, 140 to 160 km / h, hardly any wind protection, but okay, relaxed in sixth gear. Country roads through the curvy moorish mountains, the brisk travel buddy and his super sports car right in front of you and always in your sights, no problem, no stress. Sixth gear. Passages through town, strolling, relaxed, sixth gear. Toll station – stop, pay – and then, just for fun: drive off in sixth gear. It worked, wow!

If you have experienced something like this yourself, even the greatest skeptic will recognize how relaxing a silky-smooth, bull-strong four-cylinder engine can be. Of course, there is a lot of thrust from 1400 cubic meters, but when there are more than 100 Newton meters at just over 2000 rpm, impressive! The Suzuki GSX 1400 was added to the in-house bestseller 1200 Bandit as a fine naked bike alternative for 2002, at that time a good 1300 euros more expensive.

Weighing 260 kilos, but with easy handling

In return, the Suzuki GSX 1400 presented itself with a plus of eight horsepower (106 hp) from a completely redesigned injector in-line four, fully adjustable chassis as well as strong six-piston brakes and neat stainless steel and aluminum parts.

Weighing 260 kilos, but with easy handling and good travel qualities for a naked woman. The 2005 facelift primarily resulted in a nasty long exhaust, but the good basic character of the Suzuki GSX 1400 was retained. In 2006 the fat woman said goodbye. Pity.

Bread and butter, but still very tasty: beautifully framed classic round instruments of the same size, the control lights in the middle.

It is sportier than, for example, the more touristy Suzuki sister, the Bandit 1200/1250. But that doesn’t mean that the mean GSX 1400 driver belongs to the heater faction. Thus, for example, material-demanding full throttle attacks with a cold engine on the part of the previous owner are probably the exception. Workshops usually report on the exemplary care and maintenance behavior of the owners. And the four-in-line of the Suzuki GSX 1400 is considered to be extremely durable.

Interested parties should still ask for documentation of all service work, after all, the Suzuki GSX 1400 is often offered with mileages of over 50,000 kilometers, which require a close look (steering head, swing arm, wheel bearings, etc.). Leaky struts (typical problem with the first year of construction) have long been fixed (replacement). Expensive inspections (including valve clearance) are due every 24,000 kilometers, costs: a good 500 euros. High-quality retrofit dampers such as those from Akrapovic are seen as adding value.

Market situation

Suzuki GSX 1400 in used advice

MOTORCYCLE

Availability of the Suzuki GSX 1400 on the market: medium high.

You have to keep that in mind: This Japanese used car is at least ten years old, has rarely unwound less than 30,000 kilometers – often exhausting everyday kilometers – and is sometimes successful for over 6,000 euros, still good for men (and less for women ) brought. Occasionally, slightly rocked machines with six-figure mileage are already on offer – not even less than 3000 euros. The Suzuki GSX 1400 is extremely stable in value. Because it is a sought-after model and the range is not exactly over the top. Nevertheless, with a little patience and around 4500 euros on your pocket, it is easy to get a good copy with a maximum of 40,000 kilometers, with a full service history and no more than two previous owners.

Double exhaust machines in their original condition have the highest value retention because the number of such specimens is noticeably dwindling. A retrofit silencer or discreet levers do not disturb the overall picture, but heavily alienated conversions are hardly of interest to model fans. Occasionally, there are also lavishly tuned conversions with show bike character for over 10,000 euros. If you like it, okay. But it is questionable whether you can get rid of such expensive pieces later without great loss.
