Impeccable touring machine for little money
On the market for over ten years now, the two-cylinder road enduro Suzuki V-Strom 650 has earned a good reputation as a reliable companion. With price-conscious prospects, the fully touring-suitable used model falls well into the loot scheme.

The facelift for the 2012 model year was intended to give the Suzuki V-Strom 650, which had previously been labeled a rather ugly duckling, a new image: more modern and attractive. In fact, the new type C7 (large picture) has a more homogeneous design, the slimmer exhaust is more pleasing, there is two horsepower on top, the revised engine is a bit livelier, and the seat is more comfortable and the newer ABS works better. But the model upgrade hardly drove up the sales figures, which had slipped into the three-digit range in 2010.

Because the inner values and the basic character of the new model differ only insignificantly from its brave predecessor, which sold over 11,000 times from 2004 to 2011. And those interested in a Suzuki V-Strom 650 know exactly what they want: a flawless touring machine for little money. These are both, the angular type WVB1 and the refreshed type C7.
Low fuel consumption, great brakes and great suspension comfort
The appearance is probably of secondary importance for many interested parties. The list of hard facts why you should choose the Suzuki V-Strom 650 is long: good ergonomics for driver and passengers, low fuel consumption (can be driven with less than four liters per 100 kilometers!), Great brakes (from 2007 also with ABS), formidable chassis, handy, stable in curves, foolproof steering behavior, great suspension comfort.
And this reliability! 50,000 kilometers on the clock? That doesn’t make the owner of the Suzuki V-Strom 650 sweat, because the V2, which is not even 70 HP strong, but lively up to 9000 rpm, is considered to be extremely stable. Even completely head-ridden used buyers get into heartfelt raves about it. Rightly.

Improving the good – this is the claim of some previous owners. Case systems (Givi, Hepco, SW-Motech, Touratech), a better windshield (e.g. Suzuki touring windshield) or a practical main stand (original accessories) are considered to be upgrading. Another good thing is a new shock absorber (e.g. Touratech), which makes sense when fully loaded with a passenger. Some fans have fitted their Suzuki V-Strom 650 with a different pinion (mostly 14-tooth) for the purpose of a shorter gear ratio.
Although such a change is less than eight percent of the overall ratio and a new exhaust gas and noise report is not necessarily required, the main inspection can be stressful, depending on the test engineer. So check beforehand! Overall, however, you can take a relaxed approach to the tour if the checkbook is complete and the general condition of the used vehicle is good – the solid Suzuki V-Strom 650 works stress-free with regular maintenance.
Market situation
With a good 2500 euros in hand, you can confidently go looking for it. If you can live with a few scratches and negligent care by the previous owner (s) somewhat damaged metal surfaces, you will find a good ten-year-old specimen with around 40,000 kilometers. However, it is better to invest a little more money and go on the prowl for a flawless Suzuki V-Strom 650 with only one or two previous owners – the selection is good, there are usually no long journeys to visit.
Well-equipped used cars with ABS (from 2007) and less than 30,000 kilometers can be made out from 3500 euros. With the reliable Suzuki V-Strom 650, you can confidently get hold of a private seller if they undercut the usual dealer prices and the motorcycle has been proven to have been properly maintained. Good for commercial users: There are 5,000 euros well-maintained, not more than three years old and only rarely used (less than 15,000 kilometers) machines with accessories that were traded in. They offer good value. But please consider: some dealers are squandering demonstrators and new vehicles from 6500 euros!

The cockpit of the new Suzuki V-Strom 650 C7 looks tidier.
2004: Trinity in the cockpit of the Suzuki V-Strom 650 first series: outside the speedometer and rev counter as round instruments like in the 90s, the digital information center in the center.
2012: With the new type C7, the cockpit looks tidier. Nicely designed tachometer, eye-catching: speed, gear and fuel consumption display, clock.
