The French start-up company Shetters has developed a visor that can be tinted electrically. The process should only take a fraction of a second.

Photochromic visors for motorcycle helmets are nothing new. the Japanese supplier Shoei, for example, offers these for three current helmet types. Shoei relies on the technology of the manufacturer Transitions. A chemical reaction permanently adjusts the tint of the visor and thus offers comfortable and effective sun protection.

Darken in 0.08 seconds

How fast the visor sounds depends on the temperature, since the molecules move faster and can therefore change the warmer it is. In good weather, it takes about 40 seconds from very clear to a maximum of tinted. When it’s cooler, darkening takes longer.

The visor relies on LCD technology and a solar module for energy supply.

The French start-up Shetter, on the other hand, only gives 0.08 seconds for its technology. The French rely on an electrically controlled system based on LCD, which draws its energy directly from the sun via a solar cell. This technology was adapted from self-tinting sunglasses. A sensor on the visor determines the level of solar radiation and adjusts the tint of the visor surface in a split second. For assembly, the Shetter visor relies on the conventional Pinlock connections.

Shetter has invested a full five years in the development. Now per Crowdfunding Money raised for series production. Visors are already available for the Arai helmet types Rx7V, Rx7 QV pro, Renegade V, Chaser X and the Shoei helmets NXR, X-Spirit 3 and RYD. The visors will be delivered from September 2018 at prices from 329 euros.
