Shineray XY 125 GY in the top test
Zen – and the art of achieving your goal
A brand new 125cc enduro, bought on the internet for 511 euros, is definitely cheap. Whether the presumed bargain – the Shineray XY 125 GY – is also inexpensive is determined by the toughest test under the sun in Wurttemberg.
Regular readers of MOTORRAD, who read the reports on the cheap Chinese bike with the unctuous name S.You have followed hineray XY 125 GY with interest or at least with amusement (see issues 6 and 7/2007), will want to know how the Enduro is doing. To put it in the words of the spruce trees – the inventors of Holzmichels -: Yeah, she’s still alive. The emphasis is clearly on “still”.

Family planning at risk
From the very first few meters of cautious driving, it became clear that with the Shineray XY 125 GY, the foray into new dimensions in terms of two-wheeling, into which no European had yet penetrated, is not only possible but inevitable. Due to the tiny dimensions of the Chinese wheel, the driver always feels a bit like on a Honda Monkey, which is simply funny. The small four-stroke goes to work energetically – also caused by the far too short final translation.
He’s hungry for action on the gas and even in fifth and last gear pulls through willingly from idle and accelerates as best he can. Thanks to the homeopathic volumes of the supply and disposal tract, the high speeds due to the translation and the almost 100 percent full load share, depending on the traffic, a sonorous four-stroke soundscape is a constant companion and listening pleasure, and also an adequate replacement for the beeping horn.
Unfortunately, the positive aspects of the Shineray XY 125 GY have already been dealt with exhaustively, because at higher speeds – we’re talking about speeds of 50 km / h or more – the four-stroke engine develops vibrations that could thwart any family planning.
Modest driving dynamics, frightening twists
Despite the modest driving dynamics, the chassis and tires have reached the end of their possibilities. The Yuanxing tires (which translates loosely as “the rubber with the adhesion of a wet leather sole on freshly polished parquet”) also go into the race with the handicap of an enduro profile. Nevertheless, they have enough potential to elicit frightening twists and turns from the fragile frame.
The mono spring strut controlled via deflection goes to the block when you sit down and remains there while driving, the telescopic fork is not much better. When the brake is activated, which could only reveal its qualities with other tires, the front rushes down until the front tire loudly brushes against the fender.
The resulting miserable driving characteristics in combination with the susceptibility to defects and the difficulties in procuring parts allow only one conclusion: hands off. In this context, the question arises as to how it can be that a crutch like the Shineray XY 125 GY receives an ABE in a country where politicians are calling for more security with ever more hysterical shouts.

- Speedometer and tachometer illuminated differently
- Bench as hard as concrete, maltreats the rump
- The front wheel brushes against the mudguard when braking, shortly afterwards it locks
- Lost the screw on the sidestand switch
- Brake light does not work
- Steering head bearing has play
- Mirrors offer no consideration, brackets far too short
- Exhaust rattles
- The chain is very elongated, re-tensioning is impossible because the
- Eccentric discs much too coarse
Mileage 200:
- Rear right turn signal defective
- The turn signal lens can no longer be fitted, as it is round
- Starter relay defective
- Lost screw on tank fairing
- After hand washing, the inside of the speedometer is fogged up or dripping wet
Mileage 250:
- Irregular, albeit rhythmic, scraping noises with a simultaneous loss of speed cause the driver to stop. The cause is quickly found: All five screws that fix the brake disc to the hub have loosened, two of them to the point where they touch the fork. Fortunately, a Bosch service is in sight
Mileage 800:
- The lamp base of the headlamp melted and deformed due to the effect of heat, no more permanent current flow
- Complete license plate and rear light carrier broken off during driving attempts
- Despite a bad grip, both tires are already at the wear limit
