Second-hand advice Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa (1999 – 2013)
The mother of all speed bikes

Please don’t let yourself be persuaded that the Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa – the mother of all speed bikes – is now a great tourer. She is not! There are better reasons to buy a used one.

Thank you, Suzuki! Thank you for 15 awesome years in which the wineries of all professionals and eco-terrorists (almost) passed you by. People for whom the most exciting thing in life is a really great chain of people or lights will never understand that very unreasonable things can also be part of being human. For example, to beat the train at 300 km / h and open a third lane in places where only two are planned.

Escapades in front of the riot TV camera are long gone, and the two major engine failures in the MOTORRAD endurance test, which was terminated prematurely, date to the last millennium. In 2001 Suzuki reacted (unfortunately) with “voluntary self-restraint” to 295 km / h, meaningful model update campaigns and effective recalls made the Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa stable. The GSX 1300 R is now driving away a BMW S 1000 RR, and the new sales figures of the Hayabusa have been in the very manageable double and triple-digit range for years.

Suzuki Hayabusa enjoys cult status in the USA

And yet the Hayabusa still enjoys a lover, almost cult status (especially in the USA), which cannot be explained objectively. Perhaps it is precisely the unbelievable stubbornness with which the Suzuki Hayabusa refuses almost all innovations. Okay, ABS finally came in 2013, but it doesn’t need a comfortable seating position with proper wind protection, traction control, on-board computer, pillion suitability, space for luggage or other bells and whistles. Because it still has one of the most fascinating motorcycle engines of all time. She was the first to run over 300 km / h. And apart from a Royal Enfield, it’s pretty much the most unreasonable thing you can buy. If these are not good reasons to buy a used vehicle!

sightseeing

The fears of the first years of second-hand purchases (heavily jerking clutch, noticeable play in the drive train and steering head bearings, warped brake discs, worn shift claws) are now mostly unfounded, because the material-murdering heater faction, who rode down some Hayabusa in the first time, has long since ruined other toys . In short: the Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa has arrived in calmer waters, which has a positive effect on the condition of most second-hand specimens. The mechanics are stable and reliable.

Anyone who drives Hayabusa today cherishes and looks after the baby. And like to mount accessories that make the thickness a little more suitable for touring. The MRA Vario windshield and a higher LSL handlebar are welcome. Ohlins strut and Ohlins fork springs belong to the higher conversion school, but are also appreciated. Insiders swear by sintered metal brake pads from Lucas.

Market situation

The new sales figures are now very manageable, which also affects the classic trade-in business. The commercial used trade is correspondingly restrained, the majority of the second-hand Hayabusas are privately traded. Construction sites and accident machines are occasionally available for less than 4,000 euros, the majority of the first edition is now between almost 5,000 and 6,500 euros. Models from 2008 onwards cost at least 7,000 euros. If you want to spend between 7500 and 8000 euros, you can get hold of really good first-hand treasures with low mileage. The pain threshold for buying a used item is ten mille. If you as a seller would like to have more for your still fresh Suzuki Hayabusa, you have to be very, very patient. And still hopes often in vain, because demonstrators and daily approvals are available from 12,000 euros. The Hayabusa used offer is currently well sorted, but the demand is rather subdued – a clear buyer’s market and the right time to finally treat yourself to this famous cult mobile.
