Suzuki Hayabusa versus Kawasaki ZZR 1400

It’s like always. They are never in agreement. “High speed – what, please, should be great about it?” Growls Rolf Henniges. “As always, you have no clue,” counters Stefan Kaschel, “faster than anyone else is simply awesome!” This applies to everyone? Henniges puts it to the test and immerses himself in another world. Suzuki Hayabusa versus Kawasaki ZZR 1400.

Kaschel
The Henniges has problems! Seriously ask what to wear! Is it leather? Of course leather! Now he finally wants to let it rip on the autobahn and would love to wear a fringed jacket. Cries around that his station wagon would no longer fit properly! How come Clearly, such a one-piece shrinks over the years. It’s the same for all of us. During the usual strolling around with his cruisers, he probably really has no idea how it fidgets. Flying low in a flutter jacket. Then look like a pressed sausage. At least not a breath of wind gets caught in the folds. And if he drives fast enough, nobody sees it either. Should go with this bolide. With the new ZZR 1400, the Kawa boys have made another big step. Almost 1450 cubic meters, measured 206 hp. You’re about to take off. The Hayabusa stinks a bit there. 182 HP – a two-cylinder Duc can do that better these days. But aerodynamically, it’s still a force. Just now, in the editorial garage, the Henniges has sneaked reverently around the fat Suzuki. It is still the synonym for high speed. He looked pale somehow. I think he’s getting queasy. And then he actually decided on a textile suit! Well, he should know.

Hennignes
D.his pocket! You can always get new leather suits because it grows out of the old one. But not up and down, but to the right and left. And then he gossips about my suit. It is very practical: a leather-Goretex mix, tight-fitting and flap-proof. Guaranteed. Even at full throttle. Where: Honestly, what is this full throttle number? 200 things are fast enough, right? So you are usually the fastest on the track. How and where can you drive 300 km / h at all, but above all: how long? And: what, please, should be fun? The surroundings mutate into colorful lines, and your eyes are constantly bouncing back and forth between vehicles that are bobbing in the right lane. Fear comes along and keeps feet and fingers constantly waiting on the brake levers. Because none of the guys up there suspects that two torpedoes are coming from behind at 83 meters per second. There is one more thing I can’t think of: Why do the Japanese build motorcycles like the Hayabusa or ZZR 1400 alongside their lightning-fast thousands and fat touring bikes? Not fish, not meat. Too fat for the racetrack, too sparse to store luggage. But what the heck, let’s go. Trying is about thinking.

Suzuki Hayabusa versus Kawasaki ZZR 1400

With almost 300km / h on the empty motorway.

Kaschel
Somehow the ZZR marches noticeably better than the Hayabusa, the Henniges is always stuck in the mirror. Not in the first moment when I go from strolling to attack mode, Suzi regularly drives a few meters away, is irresistible. But then, from around 4000 rpm, there is no herb against the Kawa. Then this black run pushes like hell from behind. And the Henniges doesn’t even dive down properly, almost sitting there like on his cruisers. So throttle valves open and through. 200, 220, 240 – so, finally things get really exciting. Let’s see how long he’ll go back there. Whereby: The story is not really trustworthy. Somehow the stern becomes a little unstable, there is a latent stirring in the landing gear. Not bad, but not really fun either. Don’t show any weakness now. Open your eyes and through!

Henniges
Damn, I knew it! A 6, no restriction, unobstructed view. Now he turns it up full. Above all, he really sprints away with Suzi on the first few meters. Is it a shorter translation or what? Wait, Kaschel! You have no chance against the 200 HP of the Kawa! There you are! 240 km / h, and we’re back in parallel flight again. Although: This engine still has so many reserves now … If I wanted, I could easily pass it. Insane but true: I still feel safe even at 240 km / h on the 1400. If I can tell, the Hayabusa is wobbling in front of me. Right, it moves somehow. Even at this speed, my kawa runs like it is on rails. Damn! A truck pulls out there. How far away is that? 500 meters? 350? Now the task is to slow down almost 200 km / h excess. I am electrified and amazed at how effective and greedily the kawa stoppers eat up speed. The load still remains extremely stable. I am actually starting to enjoy driving fast. What you shouldn’t forget: Having fun usually has nothing to do with saving. When I fly after Kaschel and see the black rubber carpet that his rear tire rolls out, especially in slight curves, you can immediately hear the coins jingling. Less than 1000 kilometers, then he’ll be bald like his driver. But the tank also empties, like pulling the plug out of the bathtub. Especially now, because the railway becomes three lanes behind Nuremberg, hardly any traffic. There, now he crouches, now he’s serious …

Kaschel
Heidiho, three lanes, clear path. Finally! Get out of cuddle mode and into orbit. And very actively. Down a gear or two, head on the tank. Fortunately, I adjusted the rearview mirror to low-level flight mode beforehand. Usually you don’t need it because nothing can come from behind anyway. But so I kept my eye on the Henniges very low. Can watch when it gets smaller. Yes, even smaller. That works, hoho. Others in my place would be joking now. There, now, 298 km / h, the needle stands still. The world out there too. What a feeling when the Hayabusa nostrils suck in around 100 liters of fresh air per second (!). Hammer the pistons up and down in their sockets at around 85 km / h or slow down at top or bottom dead center with over 50,000 m / s², the rear tire has a temperature of around 100 degrees on the surface. Everything unimaginable. Just like the question: can you withstand all of this yourself?

Henniges
So this is what Kaschel’s favorite movement looks like: flying without taking off. Parentheses unrelated. Ambivalent. 230, 240, 250 km / h – I can still get used to that. But 298 are another dimension. Above 260 km / h, speed suddenly seems to increase disproportionately. And even I have to duck so that the Kawa can reach top speed. Amazing how energetically the 1400 is getting closer to the 300 mark. She doesn’t torment herself. It works quickly, easily. But has nothing to do with motorcycling in the sense of dynamism. Hey, Kaschel, just try to avoid a shoebox lying on the street at this speed! N / A? I agree. Because it doesn’t work. The machine becomes a projectile with an unchangeable trajectory. Anxiety? Mmm… not really, I have faith in technology. I am surprised by the driving stability of the ZZR 1400. Even at top speed you feel safer than when you are pelting over bumps in a cruiser at 120 km / h. What I also like: the consummate tension. Body and mind are at 110 percent responsiveness. I haven’t felt this alive in a long time. Oops! So that it stays that way, it is time to brake, because someone pulls out somewhere in front. Thank goodness I have ABS on board. That doesn’t seem to bother Kaschel as much, he lets stand. That’s the way it is with the defensive and offensive drivers. Just leaning my small upper body into the wind reduces the pace, and together with the gigantic brakes, the ICE quickly becomes a subway feeling. 180 km / h. Back in my world. Thank you!

Kaschel
It’s a shame, that’s it. And the Hayabusa wasn’t even in the limiter. There was still plenty of room for improvement. Speedo advance, I just say. You can see that on the tachometer needle, which still moves upwards. But anchor now, which is much less fun with the Hayabusa. At least at first, when the brakes are still cold. -Why Suzuki doesn’t give this bullet an ABS, someone has to explain to me. It happens often enough that you have to get very energetically in, because you feel much more comfortable on the Kawa. The Henniges is already in touring mode again, I can see that. Rolls next to me, playing with the display controls on the left end of the handlebar. Hey, come on, it’s free again, concentrate …

“What does he mean by contrails? Are definitely in his pants.

Henniges
It’s amazing what the Kawa information center shows. In theory, I could even have read the consumption at top speed. Puff cake! At this pace you inevitably stare ahead. There! Now he blows on again. But this time I was careful. Simply shower on. Huh, now you’re in MY rear-view mirror, Kaschel! It’s just stupid that I’m a defensive stunner. He’s guaranteed to have me on the brakes right away. No matter. Once you have to show where the hammer hangs. At least once. Please what did I say. He’s already rushing past. Enough for me, 300 km / h is like a decent caipirinha for me – once or twice quite nice, but I feel sick in excess. There! A truck slows us down, the fuel gauge tends towards zero. Time for a rest, the gas station is right ahead.

Kaschel
Ha, I knew it! The little one really fires up, surprises me with an attack and is so frightened that he immediately turns into the pit lane. Let’s hear what he has to say.

Kawasaki ZZR 1400 and Suzuki Hayabusa: “Is speeding unhealthy? No, but it can steal your last hair “.

Conclusion

“Any more questions, Henniges?”

“Sure, why are you doing the stress to yourself, Kaschel?”

“Because it’s exciting and because I’m fascinated by the technology that makes this possible. Isn’t it the same for you, Henniges? “

“But Kaschel, that is definitely kicking. But 250 km / h is enough for me. Nobody needs the rest. “

“I can live with that. As a travel pace. “

Technical data and measurements

Performance chart.

Kawasaki ZZR 1400:
4-cylinder inline, 1441 cc, 200 hp, 163 Nm, 267 kg, 15 595 euros

Suzuki Hayabusa:
4-cylinder inline, 1340 cc, 197 hp, 155 Nm, 264 kg, 12,990 euros

When it comes to green, the hammer hangs: Except for the lower speed range up to 4000 rpm (here the Suzuki pushes noticeably more powerfully) the ZZR 1400 of the Hayabusa shows what really pressure is. The whole thing culminates in a breathtaking 206 hp, while the hunting falcon clearly misses the promise of 197 hp with 182 hp. This discrepancy is also manifested in the measured values. Except for the passage from 50 to 100 km / h, the ZZR is always clearly ahead.
