The weight of the rider and external weather conditions wear down every motorcycle seat in the long run, and then a new seat has to be found. In contrast to bicycles, for which there are countless saddles in all variants in every shop around the corner, there are usually only limited options for retrofitting motorcycles. Well, you can order an original seat from the motorcycle manufacturer. But it might be too narrow, wide, high, deep or simply too boring – or maybe even too ugly?

In any case, individualization in terms of seats is very popular among motorcycle owners. You can do this yourself in a do-it-yourself manner. However, if you are not confident in this craft and are also under stress, you should not be surprised at a disappointing result in the end. You can play it safe if you are looking for a saddler who is very familiar with motorcycles and their seats.

The individual bench seats are made by master saddler Philipp Schumacher.
Accessories specialist SW-Motech has done that and has hired master saddler Philipp Schumacher (35) since this year. The special thing about the new service: Customers can put together their dream seat themselves via the website. Three shapes, 15 covers and nine yarns in different colors as well as two quilting can be combined with one another. Further options: height adjustments, foam changes and comfort cushions. The online configuration takes a few minutes on the monitor, prices start at 220 euros.

Great thing, this gives you an idea of what the bench could look like. Could, mind you, because the graphic representation is very rough and unfortunately does not convey much of the later look and feel. For a service check, MOTORRAD did not send the seat of a 30-year-old Honda Transalp to be processed by post as usual, but visited the factory on site and was allowed to watch Philip’s handicraft. The seat should be designed with almost the original contour with two centimeters more seat height, harder upholstery and better ventilation in a two-tone design that matches the machine, including contrasting stitching. And lo and behold: when you touch the sample covers directly, an alternative brown, viewed in daylight and held on the motorcycle, was simply better than the cover configured on the laptop.

No problem with simple requests (black on black), and even monochrome mopeds can be pretty reliably decorated. The online design tool is a good helper in such cases. If in doubt, however, it is better to call SW-Motech and discuss the design requirements again. In any case, the service is flawless in terms of craftsmanship, the result for the Transalp is impressive: Perfect fit, clean, the seating comfort has improved as expected, and the homogeneous quilting is an eye-catcher. Total amount including surcharges: 350 euros. SW-Seats – the official brand name – speaks of a waiting time of only a good two weeks from the arrival of the old bench in the factory until its completion. Ambitious for such a young service, because a promised delivery date should be exactly right, even and especially during vacation times!
