After ordering, you must of course also check the delivery: Is everything neatly packed? And there is a return slip?
Based on the criteria of buying atmosphere, payment methods, customer service and shipping, our test results in the following ranking list.

2/13
Place 10: Moto-Act (www.moto-act.de)
Not like that, ladies and gentlemen from Moto-Act.de! If you want to sell motorcycle items, you should a.) Have them in stock as much as possible and b.) Be able to provide customers with comprehensive information about their own products. Both were a tragedy when the test order was placed.
Screenshot: mps
3/13
9th place: motorcycle corner (www.motorradbekleidung.de)
The webshop of the southern German chain Motorrad-Ecke has a wide range and offers some great bargains. So it’s worth stopping by. However, online customer service and consulting services are not likely to be hit.
Screenshot: mps
4/13
8th place: Moto24 (www.moto24.de)
Not bad. But not good either. Moto24 has a relatively large range of goods and a good variety of products with strong brands. But when advising customers you can tell that the online shop is only a side business for the retailer.
Screenshot: mps
5/13
7th place: Bogotto (www.bogotto.de)
Overall, a very professional shop with good online functionality and a good selection of products. A good address especially for off-road fans. However, the motorcycle expertise of the Bogotto sellers leaves a lot to be desired.
Screenshot: mps
6/13
6th place: FC Moto (www.fc-moto.de)
If you are specifically looking for branded clothing bargains, you will find what you are looking for in the huge range of FC Moto. However, customer advice and shipping processing are only at a very mediocre level. The website is also not very attractive.
Screenshot: mps
7/13
5th place: Borjes (www.bekleidung-motorrad.de)
Great customer advisors who don’t have to pass even with difficult questions. But the site is a bit messy and the cash on delivery and return shipping charges are high. Still a nice shop. There are motorcycle people at work!
Screenshot: mps
8/13
4th place: Hein Gericke (www.hein-gericke.de)
Hein Gericke scores with customers with a lot of specialist knowledge, friendliness, reliable service and pleasantly clear webshop pages. The (currently) somewhat meager range of products prevents a better placement in the test.
Screenshot: mps
9/13
3rd place: Motoport (www.motoport.de)
A really good online shop with extremely competent employees who are very close to motorcycle topics. The Motoport virtual store is worth a visit if you are interested in the limited range of goods and brands.
Screenshot: mps
10/13
2nd place: Polo (www.polo-motorrad.de)
The buying atmosphere in the online shop could be made even more attractive with a more extensive range of goods, but Polo has already done everything right when it comes to customer advice and shipping and returns processing. A great store!

1st place: Detlev Louis (www.louis.de)
Germany’s largest online shop for motorcycle clothing and accessories asserts itself as the top dog with decent delivery and great customer service. Even the poor advice by email hardly spoils the top result.

Overall, a very positive picture of online shopping for motorcycle clothing and accessories: Many providers now rely on tried and tested software for their web shops, so that there is usually little hooking or twitching. The buying process is similar for the ten different providers, and the payment options are usually convenient. So what distinguishes the online shops from one another is the shopping atmosphere, which, in addition to consumer-friendly web design with short distances to the product, results not least from the variety of goods. More important: advice geared towards motorcyclists. After all, five out of ten shops show how it works with knowledgeable employees.

Admittedly, that was something in common: We conducted covert investigations into customer service in online shops. But our undercover agents did indeed have some intelligence successes. Finding: In the network, light and shadow are close together.

What is the best attribute to describe the following? Maybe: wet research. Yes, that would fit. As for the matter: someone is trying to catch customers with their online shop across Germany. Sells helmets, among other things, a sensitive product, because after all it is safety equipment and in the event of a fall, the motorcyclist should be able to rely on a good product. Advice on buying a helmet therefore requires a certain basic understanding. And if a direct fitting is not possible when shopping online, as in a normal store, then the advisor should at least be able to make suggestions, such as how the customer can sensibly determine his helmet size himself at home.

So now to wet research: The telephone customer advisor of a tested web shop answered the question about the right helmet size: “No idea, best go to the motorcycle shop and try on different helmets there.” Our undercover buyer wanted to know exactly which shops they were looking for mine and whether these are cooperation dealers of the online shop. The very nice lady replied in a good mood: “No, it doesn’t matter where. Just look for one in your area, where there are many motorcycle helmets, see which helmet is good, and then you can see whether we have it in our range. Order, done. ”When asked by the test buyer why he shouldn’t buy in the shop where the fitting was successful, the smart saleswoman:“ Because it’s always cheaper on the Internet than in a shop. ”Aha. So that’s it.
What fits well, keep what doesn’t fit back in the box
Let’s summarize: Said “shop around the corner” with a real entrance door, storage rooms, employees and products to touch and try on should bear the costs for an estimated half an hour of customer advice from a specialist, inventory of goods, rent, electricity, heating costs and all other ancillary costs to run a business, and the online shop then earns its money without doing much with a short click of the mouse by the customer who is well advised elsewhere? We at MOTORRAD say: Not like that! Fortunately, such a wet research consultation was only a very embarrassing exception in the test. Ironically, the otherwise brilliant top shop Louis.de (as far as customer service is concerned) made a similar but forgivable faux pas via email. Here, too, the consultant sent the customer to the store because the online shop cannot push a trial helmet through the DSL or telephone line. but Louis can at least refer to tens of branches across Germany, so that online sellers and customer advisors in the store should see themselves as colleagues.
Nevertheless: Online shops should actually work differently, after all, the customer may not want to have to move out, but just shop comfortably from the sofa. And a number of web shops have shown how this works in the test with their advisory services. The best size tables and recommended measuring methods for home use are stored on the website. In the case of a helmet: Ideally, with the help of another person, place a tape measure above the eyebrows and measure the slightly protruding part of the back of the skull. With the number of centimeters you already have an idea of which size could fit. Since more than two sizes are never possible, the customer should send them these sizes and possibly an alternative model. Online buyers have to accept that there is no expert salesperson at home who can assess the correct fit.

The provider pays the return costs?
Newcomers to motorcycles who have not yet worn helmets or customers who tend to be uncertain about making decisions are therefore not well advised to purchase orders and should actually go to the nearest shop with trustworthy, flesh-and-blood advisors. For everyone else: what fits well, keep what doesn’t fit back in the box and back to the sender.
And here, too, customer service is evident: If the provider pays the return costs, online purchase is of course more attractive, especially since shipping costs of four to six euros, which are a little painful, are usually incurred anyway. In our shop comparison, four providers asked the customer to pay for the return.
The conclusion is good: more light than shadow
An unsuccessful helmet trial, because the fit of all the models ordered is wrong, quickly costs almost 15 euros. Motoport, on the other hand, waives the shipping costs for the customer (from an order value of 49 euros) and also pays the return costs. Great for buyers, as do mega internet department stores from outside the industry such as Zalando. However, they have to butter up quite a bit, for example at the now popular so-called Zalando parties, for which people only order for fun trying on without intent to buy. Then it becomes expensive for the online seller if he invests in packaging and time for the entire ordering process plus any advice without making a profit. So reasonable shipping costs are okay, and as a buyer you shouldn’t overdo it and order about a dozen items to try on.
You can read here how convincing the product range, the buying experience via mouse click, the telephone advice as well as order processing and shipping in the ten online shops we selected were. The conclusion is good: more light than shadow.
A couple of positive examples
In order not to get stuck with the negative story described at the beginning, here are a few examples of how online shopping can also work: Bei polo We ordered in the evening – the next morning the perfectly tied package was there. Lightning fast! The payments made via PayPal were transferred back within 48 hours after the goods were returned by Borjes, Moto24 and Motorrad-Ecke. Great! At Borjes, the telephone advisor takes a lot of time to first politely and politely unravel the (pretended) half-knowledge of the test caller.
Then, without acting like a senior teacher, he gives a little material science, in order to finally – attentively and thoughtfully – ask whether the customer is wearing glasses. Great, because the Borjes man recommends suitable products to the buyer even without having the people visible in front of him. Also worth mentioning: when making a test call to Louis’ 24-hour hotline late at night, the operator reveals herself to be insufficiently motorcycling. But she pulls herself perfectly out of the affair by referring to the freely accessible, carefully prepared material dictionary on the website. And then, together with the customer, find out more. Which attribute is suitable for this? Quite simply: worth emulating!

Test purchase
Items ordered: full-face helmet, safety vest, joint protectors
Value of goods: 102.85 euros
Shipping costs: 4.90 euros
Delivery time: 9 days
Buying atmosphere: The motorcycle sector is only a part of outdoor, streetwear and motocross clothing. But the selection is quite good (e.g. from Alpinestars, Arai, Buse, Ixs, HJC, Nolan, Shark, Shoei, Schuberth, X-lite). When shopping, a filter based on colors, sizes and prices supports the product search very clearly and effectively.
Payment modalities: Invoice (via Klarna), PayPal, cash on delivery (5 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), online transfer (via SOFORT transfer), prepayment, purchase in installments (via Klarna).
Customer service
The email inquiries went completely unanswered. Weak! And the customer advisors could only be reached by phone after several attempts. A friendly consultant answered the relatively easy question about clothing sizes well, specifically and in a product-oriented manner. When it came to the helmet issue, however, other colleagues had to pass, and the answer was unsatisfactory.
shipment: 4.90 euros shipping costs are normal, nine days delivery time is considered below average. The delivery was neatly packed in a sturdy cardboard box. A return slip was not included and had to be ordered via the customer portal for a fee.
Conclusion: All in all, a very professional online shop with good functionality and a good selection of products. A good address especially for off-road fans. However, the motorcycle expertise of the Bogotto sellers leaves a lot to be desired.

Items ordered: functional shirt, textile jacket, Motomania mug
Value of goods: 106.95 euros
Shipping costs: free of charge (5 euros for orders under 50 euros)
Delivery time: 4 days
Buying atmosphere: The pages are a bit cluttered, and clicking through the many submenus can be a bit annoying. In addition, there are minor programming errors that lead to dead ends. But overall a decent impression is created, as the products are adequately described and shown in different views. Helpful: Only the sizes that are currently available are displayed. Good range of goods.
Payment modalities: Invoice (via BillSAFE up to 800 euros), PayPal, cash on delivery (6 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), advance payment.
Customer Service: The North Germans were the fastest in answering the faked mail inquiries. And one of the most detailed advisors. The question about the helmet size was answered perfectly, while the advice on protectors was missing an important piece of information. On the phone, the test callers met extremely competent employees who were able to provide precise information and who in no way recommended products that were intrusive. Top! Only that the return costs get stuck with the customer, something bothers.
Shipment: The (free) order arrived with delivery papers in a sturdy cardboard box and perfectly packaged. Information about possible returns or even a prepaid return slip? Nothing.
Conclusion: Great customer advisors who don’t have to pass even with difficult questions. But the site is a bit messy and the cash on delivery and return shipping charges are high. Still a friendly online shop. There are motorcycle people at work!

Buying atmosphere: In addition to the wide variety of own brands, you will also find many products from established and trendy brands such as Alpinestars or Rev’it in the online shop. Browsing for clothes, helmets and technical accessories is fun because the shop pages are clearly structured. Special offers are declared, product information and presentations
(partly with 360-degree views) help with the purchase decision.
Payment modalities: Invoice, PayPal, cash on delivery (4.20 euros + postage fee 2 euros), credit card (Master, Visa, Amex, Diners), hire purchase / financing (from 199 euros); Austria and Switzerland also prepayment, but no cash on delivery.
Customer Service: The mail inquiries were answered quickly, but also very poorly with a reference to a visit to one of the branches. Disappointing. On the 24-hour order telephone (terrific!), However, the employees iron out the service faux pas again. Although the lady only read from the material dictionary and the size tables freely available on the website, she answered the questions 100 percent correctly. class!
Shipment: Usual shipping fee, super-fast delivery, smooth, brisk returns processing. Exemplary service. great!

Buying atmosphere: Whoever enters the online shop does not immediately feel welcome: small-scale and unattractive at first glance. The menu navigation down to the individual product is a bit cumbersome and needs getting used to, and the visual representation of the products is sometimes in need of improvement. However, the variety of goods and brands is first class, and many special offers attract customers.
Payment modalities: Invoice, PayPal, online transfer (via SOFORT transfer), cash on delivery (4.90 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), credit card (Master, Visa, Amex, Diners, Discover, JCB), cash on delivery, bank transfer (prepayment).
Customer Service: Feedback to the test mail requests came after a day, but the content was vague. And even on the phone (after a long waiting loop and unsuccessful forwarding) there was little information available. Good: The credit after the return was not long in coming.
Shipment: Neatly packaged and delivered as advertised. Delivery papers with self-explanatory return slip, but the return label had to be printed out first. Instead of the 3.90 euros described in the terms and conditions, shipping costs of 4.90 euros were charged. Annoying.

Buying atmosphere: The virtual sales area is inviting: well structured, easy to understand, easy to navigate. The range of goods available in the online shop of the traditional company, which has been financially troubled in recent years, is unfortunately a bit clear, but improvement for 2015 is praised. Overall, pleasant shopping.
Payment modalities: Invoice (up to max. 400 euros), PayPal, online transfer (via SOFORT transfer), credit card (Master, Visa), direct debit.
Customer Service: The 24-hour hotline can only answer technical questions between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but offers a callback service. And then motorcycle connoisseurs are at work! The telephone advisor explained all the details to the incognito test caller like a walking dictionary of materials. Advice on clothing sizes over the phone was also professional and very honest – namely, with the indication of a possible bad purchase, as there is currently no suitable product on offer. Also good and very detailed customer advice for email inquiries. Excellent!
Shipment: Fast delivery, neatly packaged, but the cardboard came apart when the packing tape was cut, annoying with return deliveries. A prepaid return slip is conveniently included for these.

Buying atmosphere: Good selection of motorcycle clothing and helmets, many established brands are on offer (e.g. AGV, Caberg, Dainese, Dane, Daytona, Germot, Sidi, Rukka). In addition, many items from the BMW driver equipment – fans of the white-blue will feel at home in this online shop. The pages are clearly structured with suitable product information and pictures, special offers can be easily identified.
Payment modalities: Invoice, PayPal, online transfer (via SOFORT transfer), cash on delivery (5 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), credit card (Master, Visa, Amex), cash on delivery, prepayment.
Customer Service: The test email inquiries were submitted using a simple contact form with spam protection (good!), The answers came on the same day. But here light and shadow: While the information on protectors was useful, there was only spongy information about the helmet sizes. A similarly mixed picture emerged for telephone service.
Shipment: The delivery time was just okay, and everything was neatly packaged, but some of the goods looked a bit dusty and yellowed (foil on the visor ordered). No information about the return, and the cost of the return is borne by the customer.

Value of goods: 92.94 euros

Delivery time: 12 days
Buying atmosphere: At first glance, the variety of goods looks terrific. The range of sporty leather suits is very large, because Moto-Act has brands such as Alpinestars, Berik, Dainese, Rev’it, Spidi and Spyke. The preparation in the online shop is sometimes a bit unsorted, but the visual representation with zoom function is good.
Payment modalities: Invoice (via Billpay), PayPal, cash on delivery (5.50 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), direct debit (via Billpay), advance payment.
Customer Service: A pathetic picture emerged here during the service check. There is not the slightest trace of expertise in the reply e-mails! When asked about the right helmet size, reference was made to a fitting in a specialist shop because “they know better”. The “telephone support and advice” (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) is just as weak. The simplest technical questions were answered with almost real satirical ignorance.
Shipment: After various delivery cancellations, because some of the products ordered were not in stock, the delivery at least reached the recipient completely and well packaged after twelve days. In the package with the delivery papers there is no information about the return.
Conclusion: Not like that, ladies and gentlemen from Moto-Act.de! If you want to sell motorcycle items, you should a.) Have them in stock as much as possible and b.) Payment modalities: Invoice, direct debit, PayPal, cash on delivery (4 euros + post transfer fee 2 euros), credit card (Master, Visa), invoice (via BillSAFE from PayPal and Paymorrow), advance payment.
Customer Service: The credit note after receipt of the return, which had already been confirmed by e-mail, took ten days to arrive – a bit slow. And nowhere on the website is there any indication of service hours. But the positives predominate. The e-mail responses to the test questions were short, but the content was full. Motoport advertises with a competent service hotline. That’s right: advice over the phone on clothing sizes such as with a bespoke tailor, helpful and specific product tips and also a perfect helmet customer. Masterly!

Safe and serious
Not everyone has the luxury of living close to the motorcycle shopping mile. But is that why you do without the combination of your dreams? No, it’s better to go online! However, many buyers still have significant concerns about the
Online shopping. Finally, sensitive data such as credit card numbers or bank details are required. It is best to check with the provider whether they offer secure data transfer. A good indication of encrypted transmission can already be found in the web address line if it begins with “https:”.
It is best to read the general terms and conditions (GTC) carefully, all customer rights, return conditions, shipping and return costs must be listed in detail there. You should definitely take the minutes to read the small print when ordering for the first time in a shop! The question of payment remains. When buying on account, there is no stress in the reimbursement of the purchase price in the event of a return. Cash on delivery often costs extra. Fiduciary online service providers such as PayPal require registration, but this is worthwhile if you shop online regularly.
This is how motorcycle tests
Clever interrogation
Yeah, it was really fun. When setting up the fake e-mail addresses you had to think about different types of bikers. Whereby we took customer inquiries with topics related to motorcycle clothing from real life, namely from the MOTORRAD e-mail letters to the editor. On the phone, a bit of acting was asked in order not to come out as testers from the field – so the motto was: act stupid at the right moment. The consultants and salespeople often had the opportunity to demonstrate their professional competence and friendly, reliable dealings with customers.
In addition, when it came to the “customer service” criterion, how to deal with returns and who bears the costs for them played a role: seller or buyer? With regard to the “shopping atmosphere” point, we first assessed the overall impression of the website and then followed the path to some selected products. How complicated is the navigation to the destination? And how is the article presented? With lots of high-resolution images, 360-degree views, zoom, or just jittery images? It was also important how large and diverse the range of goods and brands is and whether delivery times, availability, sizes and colors are listed. When it comes to payment methods, the variety of options counted. Purchase on account resulted in bonus points, missing encryption technology deductions. For the point “shipping” the following applies: fast delivery, proper packaging and completeness as well as the integrity of the goods.
Other providers
Meeting point market square
In this service test of online shops for motorcycle equipment, we only put ten providers to the test. But there are countless other suppliers of motorcycle clothing, helmets and accessories out there in the global network. Now, a small motorcycle dealer who also sells clothes on the side has a hard time getting noticed in this infinite digital cosmos with its website that is perhaps just down to earth. So it makes sense to sell your goods on one of the large marketplaces, as you can expect a large audience and smart links there. The global companies Amazon and E-Bay offer such sales points – everything from books to sofas can be ordered there with one click. Also motorcycle things, and some dealers have put their products there. However, there are also a lot of goods of dubious origin and quality. And since some “power sellers” do not have it that way with customer service after the sale of goods and do not respond adequately to complaints, for example, the money there is not always well invested despite the seemingly attractive price bang.
The 1000PS.de marketplace pursues a slightly different concept, on which only motorcycle, motorcycle clothing and accessories dealers “set up their stands”. Among www.1000ps.de/onlineshop there are tons of clothing and accessories. Hundreds of specialist dealers list their products there, for example over 2000 helmets from more than 100 brands are on offer. In some cases, the items can be placed in the shopping cart with a click of the mouse, other offers can be purchased in the online shop or directly in the shop of the relevant retailer. The advantage of this marketplace: the chance of meeting competent and reliable salespeople with a flair for motorcyclists is much higher than with the internet giants, where dealers offer motorcycle helmets and toilet seats.
