Motorcycle suits from 700 to 2,200 euros

In MOTORRAD 19/2017 6 textile suits between 700 and around 2,200 euros were tested, evaluated and compared with one another: Dane Fureso / Tyro, Held Luca / Telli, IXS Clermont / Willmore, Rukka Realer, Stadler Sport Evo and Vanucci RVX.

MOTORRAD tested 6 textile suits on a 4000 kilometer tour. The temperatures on the trip ranged from freezing to 30 degrees Celsius, and of course it rained in between. Five of the six textile suits rely on a Goretex fabric when it comes to weather protection, just the one Vanucci RVX relies on a Sympatex climate membrane.

But there are other details that contribute to weather protection: The basic textile suit from Stadler is a very airy summer suit that complements a Gore-Tex overalls. The textile suit from Held has a Gore-Tex insert. The Vanucci RVX is a so-called Z-Liner with a loose membrane under the outer skin. Rukka and IXS offer solid laminate construction, which offers ideal tightness in the rain, but makes ventilation more difficult.

1st place: Rukka Realer

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

The Rukka Realer is the test winner in this comparison.

The outer fabric of the Rukka Realer is made of polyamide and elastane, the lining and removable thermal insulation are made of polyester. The climate membrane comes from Gore-Tex. The country of manufacture of the Rukka Realer is China. The Rukka Realer is available in sizes 46-66 (men’s jacket / trousers) plus short and long sizes. Available colors for the jacket are black / yellow, black / orange and black / gray. The pants are available in black. In size 50, the station wagon weighs a total of 5.7 kilograms. The jacket costs 1,199 euros, the trousers 799 euros.

Fit / wearing comfort: Not a high-performance sports suit, but stays in shape when you gasp out quickly. Cut and proportions fit, only the extremely high weight nibbles a bit on comfort in the long run.

Weather protection: Rain, hail and storm cannot harm the suit at all. Thanks to the highly effective thermal inlay (can be stowed in an ultra-compact way), the temperatures can easily rush into the ice cellar.

Safety: From the front (chest) to the back (back) and top to bottom when it comes to protectors, a fully equipped full dresser.

Equipment / workmanship: Well done, lots of pockets, storm collar – there’s something for the money.

MOTORRAD conclusion: The price is exorbitantly high, but Rukka has built its sporty station wagon extremely well thought out and extensively equipped. There is nothing to complain about under the point “security”. This package is exemplary!

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

2nd place: Vanucci RVX

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

The Vanucci RVX received the rating in this test “Buying tip”.

The outer fabric of the Vanucci RVX is made of polyamide and PU, the lining and the removable thermal insulation are made of polyester. The climate membrane comes from Sympatex. The country of manufacture of the Vanucci RVX is Vietnam. The Vanucci RVX is available in sizes 48 to 58. Available colors for the jacket are black / gray and black / red. The pants are available in black. In size 50, the station wagon weighs a total of 3.6 kilograms. The jacket costs 399.99 euros, the trousers 299.99 euros.

Fit / comfort: crisp cut, supple fabric, very well proportioned. Anyone who can cope with the usual standard sizes will be satisfied, because the Vanucci fits like a glove. Makes you feel very slim on the scales.

Weather protection: Moisture can only get into the interior of the trousers in very heavy continuous rain when you bend over in an athletic manner. Most of the time, however, the station wagon held tight in the test. The thermal lining is convincing on cold days, and the ventilation function for summer tours is also great.

Safety: In this price league, including a full back protector, ideally equipped.

Equipment / processing: Consistently solid and well thought-out presentation.

MOTORRAD conclusion: Voilà, there is the super comfortable, almost all-weather leotard for sporty pilots. The cheapest station wagon on our trip is anything but a cheap number and spoils with good performance and a lot of comfort.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

3rd place: Held Luca / Telli

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

The protectors of this hero combination are okay, but can be upgraded.

The outer fabric of the hero Luca / Telli is made of polyamide and polyester, the lining is also made of polyester. The climate membrane comes from Gore-Tex. The country of manufacture of the hero Luca / Telli is Vietnam. The Held Luca / Telli is available in sizes XS to 5XL (men’s jacket), DXS to D3XL (women’s jacket), S to 5 XL (men’s trousers), DS to D3XL (women’s trousers). Available colors for the jacket are black / red, black / white, black / neon yellow. The pants are only available in black and white. In size M, the station wagon weighs a total of 3.9 kilograms. The jacket costs from 599.95 euros, the trousers from 449.95 euros.

Fit / comfort: The jacket and trousers are made of Cordura fabric with a pleasantly firm grip, which stays in shape without fluttering even when driving fast on the highway and in a sporty posture. Scores with successful proportions.

Weather protection: Overall okay. Only in extremely heavy thunderstorms does some moisture get to the wearer. If the removable Gore insert is worn over the suit, however, there are no problems.

Safety: joint protectors included, the rest has to be bought. After all, a chest protector is also available as an extra.

Equipment / processing: Diverse, smart and well thought-out from head to toe.

MOTORRAD conclusion: With the principle of wearing the Gore weather protection either under or over the outer skin, the Held-Kombi is characterized by a high level of everyday use. The protector base is okay, but there is still room for improvement.

4th place: Stadler Sport Evo

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

The two-in-one principle of the Stadler Sport Evo is extraordinary.

The outer fabric of the Stadler Sport Evo is made of polyamide, polyester and cowhide, the lining is made of polyamide, polyester and cotton. The climate membrane comes from Gore-Tex. The manufacturing country of Stadler Sport Evo is Croatia. The Stadler Sport Evo is available in sizes 48 to 66, 98 to 114 and 25 to 30. Custom-made products are possible for a surcharge. Available colors for the jacket are gray / black and black / neon yellow. The pants are available in gray / black. In size 54, the station wagon weighs a total of 6.0 kilograms. The jacket costs 1,299 euros, the trousers 869 euros.

Fit / wearing comfort: It gets particularly sporty in full regalia (summer suit plus Gore-Tex overalls) – then a size 54 has to be able to lift six kilos of fabric. On the other hand, the Stadler combination shines with a perfect, exact fit.

Weather protection: Heavy, hours of rain are just as casually put away as scorching summer days. You only have to invest in extra food when it’s cold.

Safety: Top joint protectors and large back protectors are “all inclusive”. Only the breast is still neglected.

Equipment / processing: High-end quality and many valuable details determine the picture.

MOTORRAD conclusion: Stadler’s top model shines with a first-class finish, high-quality use of materials and extensive equipment. The very special two-in-one principle (summer suit / rain suit) is not for everyone, however.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

5th place: IXS Clermont / Willmore

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

The IXS Clermont / Willmore suits fast-forward tourists better than the sporty stooped group.

The outer fabric of the IXS Clermont / Willmore is made of polyamide and aramid, the lining is made of polyester and the removable thermal insulation is made of polyamide and polyester. The climate membrane comes from Gore-Tex. The IXS Clermont / Willmore is manufactured in Vietnam. The IXS Clermont / Willmore is available in sizes S to 5XL (men’s jacket / trousers) and plus in short and long sizes. Available color for the station wagon is black. In size XL, the station wagon weighs a total of 4.4 kilograms. The jacket costs 799.90 euros, the trousers 599.90 euros.

Fit / comfort: cut a bit too casual for sporty use, overall the combination lacks a precise, body-hugging cut. Lengths and proportions (sleeves, legs) fit just as well as the seat, which is very comfortable on long-distance trips.

Weather protection: Even in heavy rain, the Ixs suit doesn’t show any nakedness. The thermal insulation is also convincing. Something is only written on hot stages (“Sweat”-) Water in the station wagon, the ventilation function is too poor.

Safety: Joint protectors and back protectors are standard, the hips can optionally be equipped, but the chest area cannot.

Equipment / workmanship: Clean standards, few extra features in comparison.

MOTORRAD conclusion: The sporty all-weather group will miss the firm seat when slipping on the IXS station wagon. It is much better on the upright fast-forward tourists. In the rain, the suit is at its best.

6th place: Dane Fureso / Thyro

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

Jahn

Neatly styled and comfortable, but there is even more to security in this price range.

The outer fabric of the Dane Fureso / Thyro is made of polyamide, the lining and the removable thermal insulation are made of polyester. The climate membrane comes from Gore-Tex. The country of manufacture of Dane Fureso / Thyro is Vietnam. The Dane Fureso / Thryo is available in sizes 48 to 60. Available colors for the jacket are black / blue / silver, black / red / white, black / neon yellow / silver and black / gray / silver. The pants are only available in black. In size 50, the station wagon weighs a total of 3.5 kilograms. The jacket costs 549 euros, the trousers 399 euros.

Fit / wearing comfort: The supple fabric ensures a snug fit, but the sleeve zips push open again at high speed on the motorway. The proportions fit, and thanks to its low weight, the Dane suit is very comfortable to wear.

Weather protection: Generally good, withstands even the hardest rain. However, a minimal amount of residual moisture can creep into the interior via the collar that is too low. Ventilation options and thermal insulation are good.

Safety: Only the standard joint program, back and hips are only protected at an additional cost, the chest cannot be retrofitted.

Features / workmanship: A solid, high-quality appearance without any real weakness.

MOTORRAD conclusion: There is a neatly styled and comfortable driving suit for just under 1,000 euros for every day and without any real weaknesses. However, you can now expect a little more in the top textile league – keyword safety!

MOTORRAD verdict: good

This is how MOTORRAD tested the textile suits

The test profile with which the textile suits were ordered from the manufacturers was called “sporty cut, all-weather textile combination for long-distance travel” The range shows how different the manufacturers define this description. In April 2017, they went on a test tour for a week. The daily stages were 400 and 1200 kilometers long and each lasted up to 10 hours.

The southernmost point of the Textile Combination Text Tour was Tortosa in Tarragona / Spain, where the thermometer easily scratches the 30 degree mark in spring. On the return trip to Germany, all climate zones of a typical motorcycle season were taken in fast motion. Dry, sunny days on the Mediterranean coast, stormy hours in Provence and – the closer you got to home – extremely wet sections up to heavy downpours and hail in the Alps, which again particularly challenged the textile combinations.

In between, the weather protection and fit of the textile suits were checked and details that were well or poorly resolved were recorded. In Stuttgart, after a joint assessment of all candidates in comparison to the protector check, the Sas-Tec drop test bench was used. The positive result: all of the candidates in our textile combination test remained well below the permissible residual force values.

Protectors of the textile suits

Test textile suits between 700 and 2168 euros

van der Ems

Two joint protectors, a back protector and an even more exotic chest protector.

A decent and extensive set of protectors belongs in every motorcycle suit. But even in the upper-class textile suits, this is not common with all manufacturers.

Joint protectors have now established themselves as the equipment standard – however, the hips are mostly neglected. The European standard, which regulates the requirements, appeared 20 years ago. A new version from 2012 defines a second limit value. Joint protectors that meet the latest standards are marked according to EN 1621-1: 2012, Level 2. Outstanding in our test: the large-area protectors in the Held textile combination that are adapted to the application side.

It would be desirable for jackets to be provided with an adequate back protector at the factory. This standard 1621-2 has also been around for a few years. The first version came in 2001, a revision in 2014. In addition to the large-area covering “Full-backs” you can now also narrow it “Central backs” use. Best in our test: the huge full-size back protector from Stadler.

The standard for chest protectors EN 1621-3 will be adopted shortly. In our test, Rukka is already well equipped, and at Held you can at least upgrade.
