Test Yamaha Tmax 500
T-time
It was time to renovate the Tmax 500 again. For the 2008 model year, Yamaha did it particularly thoroughly, but left the maxi scooter with its well-known virtues.
As a reminder: the founder of the two-cylinder maxi scooter class was none other than him Yamaha Tmax 500. That was in 2000, and in the eight years since his sensational appearance, he has changed little. However, the competition that followed has meanwhile clearly outperformed the 44 hp, technically innovative parallel twin with counter-rotating compensating piston instead of a balancer shaft in terms of power and displacement. In one thing, however, the Tmax is still superior today: in sportiness. No other scooter has a chassis that is as stiff as it is stable, which hardly has to fear comparison with motorcycles.
Anyone who believed that Yamaha would increase displacement and performance with the latest Tmax generation was once again disappointed. The work on the drive did not go beyond modifications to the engine management, which serve to overcome the Euro 3 hurdle, and a few minor technical changes. The two-cylinder continues to hang neatly on the gas, the variator sets in quickly and without any significant delay, accelerates the Tmax properly from almost all speed ranges. And its consumption is pleasantly low at a moderate country road speed with an average of 4.6 liters normal per 100 kilometers.

The Tmax after the renovation work.
A lot has happened with the chassis. Instead of plain steel, the scooter now has a frame made of cast aluminum. And instead of the small 14-inch front wheel, the well-damped, sensitive fork has a larger 15-inch wheel. This helps to improve the already good driving stability and high steering precision a bit. The larger bike has not damaged the easy handling up to now either, but the Tmax takes pleasantly neutral bends of all kinds and looks well balanced.
The one-piece four-piston calipers of the front double disc brake are also new. In combination with the good, inconspicuously regulating ABS, the brake can be used very effectively, in line with the sporty character of the Tmax, and it can be easily dosed with little manual force. With the rear brake, the ABS intervenes relatively early. Externally, the Yamaha scooter has not undergone any revolutionary change, but the somewhat fuller cladding with the newly shaped, higher window and the optional wind deflectors for the handlebars (101 euros) significantly improve the Tmax’s wind and weather protection. The tank, which has been enlarged by one liter, and the significantly increased capacity of the storage space under the bench seat make it more practical and suitable for touring. And not even at the expense of its sportiness.
