  • The Church of Choppers
  • New rear, new swing arm
  • New front
  • New paint
  • Conclusion

With the words chopper and Indian cliched scraps of images come together in your head, but certainly not one that has been converted into a Cafe Racer Indian FTR 1200: Complete with a new rear, swing arm, tank and of course a bright graffiti paint job.

The Church of Choppers

Jeff Wright lives in Iowa and builds motorcycles. Chopper, to be precise, and his workshop is called The Church of Choppers. Exaggerated? Probably. But questions about the sources of inspiration for famous customizers like Roland Sands are usually the answer ” The Church of Choppers”. And if the preacher of this church builds a bike himself, then it can be an Indian FTR 1200.

New rear, new swing arm

After a short time only the chassis with the fine V2 of the FTR is in the church. Jeff pulls the rear frame out of tubular steel and attaches it to the standard tube of the main frame. This gives Jeff the opportunity to get away from the single, external shock absorber and use two Ohlins dampers. But since they also need a pivot point on each side of the swingarm, Jeff quickly redraws the swingarm: In the form of the original Indian tubular swingarm that has been turned upside down. The component was drawn quickly, the production was more demanding. Jeff welds the pipe for several nights until everything fits. In the new rear he also places the filler neck of the petrol tank, which, like the original, is located quite deep in the frame.

New front

The other part of the chassis is rearranged using a USD fork from Ohlins with the standard Brembo brake system and supplemented with deep handlebar stubs. A second FTR headlight is placed in a duo under the newly placed original round instrument of the FTR. The feet have also been repositioned: They now shift and brake on milled equipment from Gilles Tooling, rounded off on the right-hand side by a titanium exhaust system from Racefit. It is not known whether the performance is effective, but the weight saving of 7.2 kilograms.

New paint

A lot of the icing on the cake for the conversion of the Indian is the graffiti-like paintwork by Jeff and Dana Harrison. On the base coats in pastel “lubricate” the artists use wild graphics, patterns and tags like in the exit of a subway and thus crown the already wild renovation of the Indian FTR 1200 by The Church of Choppers.

Many are beautiful, but also impassable.

Better to leave it in its original condition.

Conclusion

New rear, new swing arm, new chassis? Finished with a wild finish, possibly with a marker pen? That should be done on the MOTORRAD endurance test machine but also “pretty quick” walk.
