Less speed, gigantic racing fun

At the TT they run as lightweight, as the Suzuki SV Cup they have shaped entire generations of hobby racers. But the little twins are still alive – and how!

October 15, 2013
The throttle valves are on the stop. My Suzuki Gladius fires from the Kohlbach chicane onto the straight in the direction of the dreaded Seng. First slightly to the right, then in a flash to the left, then immediately right again – all at full throttle. There it is again, that sensational feeling – man’s curve!

Two races per event
Does the front wheel hold? Does it grip behind? Everything is fine, and again I can make up a few meters in front of me. The wide and high handlebars of the Gladius offer real advantages when it comes to changing direction as quickly as possible. After three laps, I moved up from 19 on the grid to fourth place, because as a guest starter in the Minitwin Cup you always have to be at the back of the race. Unfortunately, the leader in the said Seng loses control of his bike and can no longer prevent the fall when trying to get back on the track. The man in front of me just passed him, and to top it all off, the motorcycle lying on the track caught fire. Termination of the race. My race to catch up was over for now. Fortunately, there are two races per event in the mini-win. So I got another chance.
My bike is a Suzuki Gladius 650 built by Suzuki dealer Ralf Altzschner from Neukirchen-Vluyn. Arrow complete exhaust system, Micron Powercomander, fork conversion and shock absorber from Twenty Suspension, levers and notches from LSL and a fairing mask with spoiler and hump cover from the Italian Gladius -Cup – the hobby racer is ready. With the measured 72 hp, it doesn’t necessarily pull your arms out, but the Gladius can therefore be moved quickly and stress-free, especially by racing track beginners. With the wide handlebars you have everything under control in a playful way. Only in long curves with bumps was a clear, but still controllable pumping on the rear wheel felt in Schleiz, which unfortunately could not be eliminated in a hurry.
But what are mini-wins now – another term for Gladius Cup? It’s about small two-cylinder, more precisely four-stroke with a maximum of 650 cubic capacity. Along with the Gladius, these are the ones Kawasaki ER 6 or the good old Suzuki SV 650, which is mainly used in mini-twin racing. A clear advantage: if something goes wrong, someone on site can certainly help with spare parts or advice.
Minitwin-Racing was created among friends over a beer
In general, Minitwin-Racing was created among friends over a beer. The initiators Holger Nick, Christian Otto and Ingo Volmari thought about how to make the starving little two-cylinder class in the German series sports championship more interesting again. The clever idea was to simply use the existing, well-organized format of the series sport and simply write out a separate rating for the mini-wins within the small series sport class, which also includes 250 cc two-stroke engines and 400 cc four-cylinder four-stroke engines.
The initial resistance of the DMSB and the series sports organizers gave way very quickly. Because good marketing, internet presence, attractive bonuses and sponsoring have attracted many new starters. In the meantime, class 4 in series sport has become the largest class in terms of numbers thanks to the starters of the mini-win.
Bikes are very cheap to buy and maintain
Many amateur racing drivers have recognized that one can do attractive racing with these motorcycles, which are very cheap to buy and maintain. You can also see that in the paddock. There are no truck trailers, huge mobile homes or awnings with the character of a fair here. Everything still looks familiar and honest. Another advantage of this “small” motorcycle category is the relatively slow new and further development of the technology used. This means that it is still possible today, for example, to be competitive with a ten-year-old SV 650. Even Wolfgang Pohler, with whom my racing motorcycle stayed on the Schleizer Dreieck over the weekend and against whom I rode in series sport in 2003, still drives such an old motorcycle on the racetrack.

A Gladius Cup could be established within the racing series in the next year. A new Gladius with all conversion and tuning parts and the entry fee should be available for the entire season for around 8500 euros. At the end of the event in Schleiz we were allowed to drive our second race. After twelve laps and many months without a race, I was actually able to win in Schleiz. And as a reward there is even the German national anthem at the award ceremony! The speed in mini-twin racing is certainly not as high as in other cups or racing series. But the racing fun is huge!
The cup checker
Rene Raub started in the 2001 Suzuki SV 650 Cup. In series sport he won the small twin class several times and in 2004 the 750 class. In 2006, the Heiligenstadt native came third in the World Endurance Championship and won the Oschersleben 24 Hours with his team. There he won two more open classes. With the PS-LSL-X-Lite 61 team, Rene Raub took third place in the 2011 24-hour classic in Le Mans, France.
