MOTORRAD has chosen the ten best passes in Switzerland and awarded them on a scale from one to ten points for the following disciplines: general driving pleasure, slow bends, fast bends, landscape and pass altitude scenario. Of course, not every small pass could be driven in every corner of Switzerland, and we tried to combine the pass roads in such a way that they could be driven in one big round without too much “idling”. The great Saint Bernard will be dealt with in a later story, otherwise all passports that have rank and name are included.

We tested sixteen – but now the stage is clear for the top ten. Let yourself be inspired for your season planning, experience the ultimate rollercoaster feeling and write us your opinion.

1st place: Sustenpass

Start from Waasen, right behind the town, grippy asphalt, harmonious, sporty curves, spectacular driving fun, high speeds possible, would be great for a pass race, the twenty minutes from Waasen to the top of the pass mean unlimited driving fun. Recommendation: From the top of the pass up a small road even higher and then rest (or spend a wonderful night) in the mountain inn Sustenpass Hospiz (www.sustenpass-hospiz.ch) between the cantons of Uri and Bern at 2265 meters. Quaint, cozy pub, grandiose panorama. Descent to Innertkirchen spectacular, slightly slower curves, but more intense landscape experience, unearthly views and a stronger rollercoaster feeling. With rare beauty and diversity, this pass honestly deserves victory.

2nd place: Grimsel Pass

Connection between the Bernese Oberland and Valais. Start in Innertkirchen, majestic curves, partly wide roads, flat, grippy asphalt. Then a large reservoir, a dam, a hospice, it continues over endless hairpin bends, the best panoramic views, you screw your way up into a lunar landscape. The top of the pass is very touristy, especially overcrowded with motorbikes on weekends. Tip: Spend the night (www.grimselhotels.ch), in the evening before sunset again down and up the north side, then the pass is empty. Absolutely: drive on the panorama road from the Hotel Alpenrosli shortly before the pass. It leads to the Oberaarstausee: unforgettable views of the glacier world. Round-trip transportation is the highlight. Descent over the south side to Gletsch: tight curves, good asphalt.

Start from Bormio (Italy), pass from the beginning inspiring with steep curves through wild, overgrown slopes, mixture of narrow and wide hairpin bends, some straights, a lot of driving fun despite hairpins and several tunnels, above desert-like scree landscape, mixture of good and in need of repair Asphalt. Shortly before the pass and the border station (almost always unoccupied) turn off to the Stilfser Joch. Departure towards Santa Maria (Canton of Graubunden) in the Val Mustair very attractive, great serpentines, beautiful views, then from 2200 meters to about 2000 meters a 2.5 kilometer gravel passage, carefully passable with road machines. All in all, a very varied pass, enjoy the silence during intermediate stops, experience nature until the next Ducati approaches.

Start from Splugen (Rheinwald, CH) in the direction of Chiavenna (Sondrio, Italy) through a Scottish-looking high moor landscape, wild nature; very tight turns spiral upwards. Wavy asphalt but spicy, at the top of the pass at the border, then a wildly romantic descent, rusty guardrails, beautiful curve frenzy up to the lake Lago di Monte Spluga. Then it starts: super tight hairpin bends, steep narrow streets meander deep into the gorge, difficult to drive smoothly, many dark tunnels and galleries, dramatic landscape, hairpin bends do not stop until Chiavenna. The north ramp measures nine kilometers, the south ramp, which is very challenging from the lake, is 30 kilometers, a pass for adventurers who are hungry for adventure, less suitable for beginners.

Start from San Bernardino in the Misox Valley (Mesocco, CH) towards the Hinterrhein, many bends through the forest, quarry stone barns, on a high plateau wild, picturesque mountain landscape, very impressive. Nice hairpin bends, sometimes narrow, but often also well-developed roads, clean asphalt, easy to drive. At the top of the pass, the European watershed and the language border between German and Italian. Exit north side through Via Mala Gorge as for Splugen, wildly romantic, beautiful hairpin bends, glaciers have abraded rocks, the structures for ventilation of the tunnel protrude from rocks, thanks to this little traffic. Less spectacular in the lower part of the north ramp.

Entry into our round of passes. Start in Linthal (Canton Glarus) towards Altdorf (Canton Uri). Cobblestone in sections, narrow road, partly wavy asphalt, changing panoramas: forest, alpine meadows, rock faces, plateau with cows (attention: cows and cow dung often also on the road). Sometimes police checks, long straight section through villages (with numerous refreshment stops) and meadows, then the final ascent with spectacular panoramas, serpentines better developed, also the descent to Altdorf characterized by sometimes beautiful, flat curves with grippy asphalt, very picturesque pass road. Was the Klausen race track for cars and motorcycles between 1922 and 1934.

Start in Airolo (Ticino) towards Ulrichen in the Valais. The pass begins nicely with Italian flair, changes after several beautiful, not too narrow hairpin bends to the typical Canadian national park appearance, further up then wild, rugged, stony mountains. Several straights between serpentines, a varied landscape enjoyment. From the top of the pass (often frequented by many motorbikes) with a lake and a large restaurant, a magnificent view of the Bernese Alps to the south of the Gries Glacier. Valais side drops steeply into gorges, longer straights with hairpin bends at the end, but smooth, brisk driving possible, also thanks to mostly clean asphalt. Warning: marmots often cross fearlessly.

Start from Susch coming from the Ofenpass (also approach lane to Reschen or Bernina) towards Davos. Hairpin bends and bends ascent, after a few kilometers of good road then bad, potholed asphalt. Start from Andermatt in the direction of Airolo, Ticino. Driveway rather unspectacular, fast, wide curves, good asphalt, pass summit crowded, a lot of tourism, hotels, shops. Two variants for the descent to the south: well-developed main road with silky asphalt, easy to drive, or “La Tremola” (The Trembling), the old road: especially when wet, cobblestone pavement, switchbacks, please drive carefully!

Our selected Swiss passes have the advantage of not costing any tolls and still offering the highest (driving) enjoyment. Watch out for speed traps, cows and cooks.

The route:
We tried to lay our pass route in such a way that one lap is possible. Some of the less attractive passes had to be left by the wayside. The journey works from Zurich or Bregenz, start and end are in Nieder-
Urns at the Walensee. If you have to drive a pass twice on the lap or if you get into Italian territory, that doesn’t detract from the fun, on the contrary. Our pass sequence: Klausen, Susten, Grimsel, Grimsel-Panoramica-Strabe, Furka, Oberalp, Gotthard (Tremola and Neue Strabe), Nufenen, San Bernardino, Splugen, Maloja, Albula, Bernina, Levigno, Umbrail, Ofen, Fluela. That means 16 passes, but not all of them made it into the top ten. Which doesn’t mean that the others are free of fun. Please try it out!

Travel time: 6 days
Distance covered: 1500 kilometers

The review:
In order to present the character and overall perception of the individual passes in a sufficiently differentiated manner, but not too complicated, the following disciplines were assigned on a scale from one to ten points: general driving fun, adventure factor in slow and fast corners (can vary greatly), general impressions of the landscape and the impression of the top of the pass, where you usually stop for a moment because it represents the geographical goal of driving through the pass. The evaluation arises from the finest possible observation, but ultimately subjective impressions and can be discussed.

The other passes:
The Malojapass lands in 11th place with 22 points and the Oberalbpass in 12th place with 21 points. Behind them in 13th place is the Ofen Pass with 20, in 14th place the Furkapass (16 points), a bit behind in position 15, the Bernina (15 points) and 16th place the Livignopass, a rather unspectacular road that connects us between Bernina and umbrail served.

Driving in Switzerland:
You can have maximum fun on federal passports, but you should take speed limits seriously. One to five km / h too fast costs 40 francs, six to ten immediately 100 francs, 11 to 15 km / h too much means 160 francs, all with zero tolerance. The maximum speed on country roads: 80 km / h. 50 km / h applies in towns and 120 km / h on motorways. A vignette is required for the motorway (27.50 euros or 40 francs), which is valid for one year and is available from ADAC, at the borders or in Switzerland at train stations, rest stops or kiosks. It takes more time to complete the pass round without a vignette. Please note that driving on passes costs a lot of tire tread.
