Tips for screwdrivers for beginners
First steps for beginner screwdrivers
Change oil, adjust chain, remove battery
Nobody is born a master mechanic – but everyone can learn a few basic motorcycle operations.
Christopher East

Owning a motorcycle and working on it, isn’t that nice? In the past it was almost a matter of course as a cyclist to have some mechanical skills, after all, motorcycles lagged behind cars for a long time in terms of technology and reliability. Nowadays it doesn’t seem necessary to get your fingers dirty: Modern motorcycles have become more reliable and have to go to the workshop for inspection less often. However, it has never hurt anyone to know a little more about their motorcycle than they really should. Telling proudly how you changed the oil for the first time on your own? Not having to go to the dealer every time you adjust the chain? Remove the battery for charging or simply change a light bulb in the headlight? 2Wheels helps with this. Also helpful: Experienced friends and a do-it-yourself manual for your own motorcycle model.
Disguise
Bilski
Tip for a screwdriver: Change small cladding parts, side covers or cockpit windshield.
The task: Change smaller fairing parts, side covers or cockpit windshield
Tool: Ring / open-end wrench 8-14, ¼-inch ratchet with extension and sockets 8-14, Phillips bits, hexagon socket 4-6
Working time approx: 10 mins
Attention: Not by force! The plastic parts break and tear quickly under tension
Top tip: Put screws, rubber rings and other small parts in groups in the provided boxes or boxes, then everything is ready to hand during the final assembly and nothing is lost
chain
Bilski
Tip for a screwdriver: check and adjust chain passage.
The task: Check and adjust chain slack
Tool: Ring / open-end wrench 8-12, ring / open-end wrench 17-36
Working time approx: 10 mins
Attention: A chain that is tensioned too tightly can, among other things, lead to bearing damage at the gearbox output. Note the recommended chain sag according to the manufacturer (at least two centimeters, significantly more for enduro bikes; see manual)
Top tips: Check the chain slack at various points in the compressed state (ideally with an assistant sitting on the motorcycle during the adjustment). So that the wheel sits correctly in the swing arm and is straight on the track, it is essential to pay attention to the markings between the screw connection and the swing arm on both sides. To be sure, measure the distance between the swing arm end and the axle bolt on each side. The dimensions should match
Fuses
Bilski
Screwdriver tip: replace fuses.
The task: To deceive
Tool: Needle nose pliers; if the cladding has to be removed: see recommended tools there
Working time approx: 10 mins
Attention: Ignition off, otherwise there is a risk of short circuits! Use only replacement fuses with exactly the right value. A fuse that is too weak will blow again immediately; an excessively strong fuse can cause consequential damage such as a cable fire
Top tip: If possible, check the built-in fuses again, obtain a test lamp for this
Handlebars, levers and fittings
Bilski
Screwdriver tip: adapt handlebars, levers and fittings to personal ergonomics.
The task: Adapt to personal ergonomics
Tool: Ring / open-end wrench 8-14, hexagon socket 3-6, ¼-inch ratchet with extension and sockets 8-14, cross-head bits and – if necessary – Torx bits
Working time approx: 20 minutes
Attention: Do not overtighten the screws, because cast fittings break and tear comparatively quickly. If the handlebars are misaligned: check the freedom of movement and, when the steering wheel is fully turned, check the functions of the cables and fittings
Top tip: Tighten the lever clamps so tight that they can just be twisted by hand – if they fall over, these fittings are less prone to breakage
Engine lubrication
Bilski
Screwdriver tip: change the oil and filter.
The task: Change oil and filter
Tools: ring / open-end wrench 8-24; for oil filter housing: ¼ inch ratchet with extension and sockets 8-12. Also get: model-specific oil filter and used oil pan, possibly an oil filter wrench
Working time approx: 30 minutes
Attention: The drain plug is usually located in the aluminum motor housing, it must not be tightened too tight under any circumstances. The fine thread breaks comparatively quickly
Top tips: Run the engine warm (not hot), cold oil is too thick to drain completely. As a precaution, change the sealing ring (copper / aluminum) at the same time. Keep the receipt of the new oil in order to recycle the used oil. Tip for on the go: improvise a funnel from coated cardboard packaging
Change the light bulb
Bilski
Screwdriver tip: change light bulbs.
The task: Change light bulbs
Tool: Allen 3-6, ¼-inch ratchet with extension and sockets 8-14, Phillips bits
Working time approx: 10 mins
Attention: Do not touch the glass with your bare hands; Dirt, grease and sweat reduce the light output. Better just touch the metal ring
Top tip: Even if the advertising promises better radiation values, only use light bulbs and branded products approved for the model, as this could possibly result in a wrong radiation pattern
Remove and install battery
Bilski
Screwdriver tip: remove and install battery.
The task: Removing and installing (only recommended for beginners if easily accessible, e.g. under the bench)
Tool: 1/4 inch ratchet with extension and nuts 10-14, Phillips bits
Working time approx: 15 minutes
Attention: Don’t forget to turn off the ignition. Otherwise there is a risk of short circuits!
Top tips: When removing, always unscrew the minus pole first, when installing, connect the plus pole first. Screws on the poles should not be overtightened. If possible, lubricate the pole with grease, pay attention to the ventilation hose
Basic tool
Bilski
Basic tool for beginners.
- Foot pump
- Shell (side of a plastic canister). Holds tools or the wheel axle while working
- Ring / open-end wrench. Should cover the area (wrench size SW) 8 to 24 millimeters (for wheel axles also 27 millimeters and larger)
- Allen key (especially practical with ball heads)
- Air pressure gauge. Warning: not everyone reaches the tire valves
- Adjustable “water pump pliers” with lock. Protects against crushed fingers
- ¼ inch ratchet box. It should not only be a socket wrench (also known as a “nut”), it should also be a Phillips head-,
- Hexagon socket and torx bits included. A whole range of screwdrivers can be created with a solid handle
- Knipex pliers wrench. The ingenious all-round tool at a price of around 40 euros has a wrench size of up to 46 millimeters, sits well on the screw head and can be used instead of an open-end wrench for some jobs
- Curved needle-nose pliers
- Strong side cutter
