If there is still an orange-colored sticker on the license plate at the beginning of the 2014 season, the test fee will be 20 percent higher. “Increased testing effort” – a bad joke.

The visual inspection is about corrosion and tampering. Specifically: is the dB eater still in there? In motorcycles registered from 1989 onwards, the carbon monoxide content is also measured.

But the coveted badge (which has been stuck on the license plate since 1961) is not only allowed to be awarded by the technical inspection associations (including North, South, Rhineland, Thuringia and Saarland), but also by other state-recognized testing organizations such as Dekra, GTu and KuS . All of them check in accordance with Section 29 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) and collect around 60 to 65 euros for this, including the emissions test that is mandatory for all motorcycles registered from 1.1.1989. The fees can vary somewhat, the testing organizations are service providers and compete with each other.

The “HU according to § 29 StVZO” is due every two years, in the case of motorcycles – in contrast to cars – already two years after initial registration. Since July 1st, 2012 at the latest, there has been no backdating if the test date is exceeded, but if you miss the appointment for more than two months, you will have to reckon with a 20 percent higher test fee. The HU knows four different test results: “Without defects”, “Minor defects”, “Significant defects” and “Unsafe for traffic”. If the minor deficiencies do not occur in a concentrated manner, there is usually still the coveted badge.

Review within a month

However, the vehicle owner is obliged to take care of their removal “immediately”. Anyone who gets into a police check with said defects may pay – a fresh HU badge doesn’t help either. In the event of significant deficiencies, the badge is not even issued and a re-examination is required within one month. This costs around twelve euros for motorcycles at the first inspection. A traffic-unsafe vehicle is no longer allowed to participate in road traffic and the previous sticker must be removed.

In contrast to the rust-loving car group, there are usually only minor defects in motorcycles. And so that such things do not occur as far as possible, a small preliminary check is worthwhile, which can easily be done in 15 minutes. Motorcycle professional Hauke Soltau shows us what to watch out for so that in the end we get what everyone wants: the HU test report with the magic words “without defects”. Or in other words: “fresh TuV”.
