Tips for buying used

Yamaha’s big hit, the MT-07, is just four years old. As one of the best-selling motorcycles in Germany, it is recommended on the used market despite its young age.

Masters of Torque, masters of torque. This is what the abbreviation MT stands for, initially in the brawny, brute but not very successful MT-01 and revived as a bang from 2013 – initially in the three-cylinder model MT-09, and in the following year in the popular MT-07. Initially available for just 5,495 euros, this 690-cubic two-cylinder bike sold so well that it not only made it into the top three of the registration numbers, but now – just four years later – thanks to the huge inventory can already be found in large numbers on the used market. And the good news is: Even as a used one, she knows Yamaha MT-07 still impress with their virtues. With power, handiness, features, design – and, as has meanwhile turned out, also with reliability.

MT-07 is undoubtedly a solid motorcycle

Of course there is also at the Yamaha MT-07 a few rough edges. A slight tingling sensation at a constant speed of around 5,500 rpm, for example. Or the transmission, which is sometimes a bit tricky to shift. And finally the only real problem area: The gear indicator integrated in the LC display was not only a wobbly candidate in the MOTORRAD long-term tester, but there are also reports of dropouts in higher gears in Internet forums. Otherwise, everything in terms of technology is flawless.

Visually rather simple, the easy-to-read LCD cockpit has all the necessary information ready, including the gear indicator.

Meanwhile, the chassis offers room for improvement: the fork and shock absorber are too soft for many riders. Yamaha responded to this in the current model year 2018, various suspension specialists offer replacements for earlier models in the form of new fork springs or an accessory shock absorber. So the Yamaha MT-07 is without a doubt a solid motorcycle. And yet it has a problem as a used one: the new price. That was and is comparatively low, which is why the quite justified used prices seem almost too high. One argument in favor of buying a used vehicle is the equipment: comfort bench, windshield, crash bar or luggage rack. If you include these accessories in the bill, you can save a lot on used purchases.

Dealer interview with Motorradhaus Scharmutzelsee

MOTORCYCLE: Are you actually wondering that MOTORRAD is writing used advice for the Yamaha MT-07? After all, it has only recently played a role in the motorcycle market …

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: That’s true, but it’s an essential role. Both for motorcyclists, who receive an ingenious motorcycle at an affordable price with the Yamaha MT-07, as well as for Yamaha: After a lengthy and hesitant model policy, with the MT-09 and especially with the MT-07, they have barely left got the curve.

Scharmutzelsee motorcycle store

Daniel Knust and Sylvio Bauer have been running the Scharmutzelsee motorcycle store with sales and workshop since 2015.

MOTORCYCLE: Since then, the Yamaha MT-07 has been shaking up the motorcycle market, as it offers a lot of motorcycle for very little money. At such a low new price, recommend buying a used one or buying a new one right away?

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: Ultimately, of course, everyone has to decide for themselves. But there are already many well-kept vehicles from first hand that are offered second-hand. You can save up to 2,000 euros compared to buying a new one. And since the entry-level price was just as cheap, many first-time owners invested in an accessory exhaust, lowered the Yamaha MT-07 or at least fitted adjustable levers. Used buyers can of course benefit from this.

MOTORCYCLE: How do you explain this unusual presence on the used market for such a young bike??

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: There are two reasons. On the one hand, the Yamaha MT-07 is a motorcycle for beginners and returnees. Therefore, many owners will quickly reorient themselves. In addition, it is of course due to the number of units sold: There are simply a lot of MT-07s in Germany. And what is definitely not the problem: some technical inadequacy.

MOTORCYCLE: The Yamaha MT-07 also proved its technical reliability in the MOTORRAD endurance test: apart from the sometimes striking gear indicator, the MT showed no weakness over 50,000 kilometers. What is your experience in terms of reliability?

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: The Yamaha MT-07 has a good reputation with us in terms of technology. However, we had a couple of models where the steering head bearing had a locking point. One should pay attention to this when viewing. Otherwise there are no specific defects, but interested parties should of course pay attention to the usual points, such as maintenance of the checkbook and the wear of the chain and tires.

MOTORCYCLE: keyword “checkbook maintained”: The service intervals are 10,000 kilometers, the valve clearance should be checked every 40,000 kilometers. These are practical guidelines?

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: We are a bit skeptical about the valve clearance. We already had models in which the valve clearance had to be corrected after a mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If necessary, this can be heard during the inspection by a loud rattle in the cylinder head.

MOTORCYCLE: What is your prognosis for the next few years for the Yamaha MT-07?

Motorbike store Scharmutzelsee: We consider the Yamaha MT-07 to be very stable in terms of price. And since it has little direct, serious competition, it will certainly continue to sell well when used like new.
