Tips when buying a leather suit

Motorcycle clothing: leather suit
Find the right leather suit

The motorcycle suit should sit properly and protect. Customization is always the best, but not for the small budget. With the right know-how, you may find a suitable leather suit among the remnants off the shelf.

  • Bring the undergarments normally worn when riding a motorcycle to try on. If you squeeze into the leather suit in autumnal temperatures, you have to take into account the space required for bulky clothing
  • The same applies to a recommended, separate back protector that protects the spine over a large area from the neck to the tailbone
  • Never buy a leather suit too far, because the protectors can shift in the event of a fall
  • Even if your wallet is too narrow for expensive branded clothing or even custom-made clothing, you should still try out high-quality leather suits from renowned manufacturers to get a feel for the optimal fit
  • If you want to attend racing training often, you are better off with a one-piece for safety reasons (weak point connection zipper)
  • Always keep in mind: A well-fitting leather suit improves the driver’s wellbeing and thus maintains the ability to concentrate

If no off-the-peg leather suit fits perfectly, there is no avoiding the extra expense for a custom-made product

Purchase advice in detail

Fitting: A well-cut leather suit only fits optimally in the typical driver’s posture. We therefore recommend trying it on on your own machine. A properly fitting leather suit must not be wrinkled on the shoulders or chest and should not be tight in the back. Also make sure that the collar does not press on the larynx and that both the sleeves and the legs are cut long enough.

Leather doubling: A good leather suit should have doubled leather on the buttocks, shoulders, elbows and knees as additional protection against abrasion. Easy to check by grabbing the leather layers outside and inside and pulling them apart.

The sleeves should protect against wind and weather up to the wrist.

Sleeve: In the sitting position, they should reach to the wrists. Important: The cuffs must be closed tightly to prevent drafts and slipping in the event of a fall. Neither bulging zippers nor chafing seams should impair freedom of movement.

Inside pockets: make sure that the inside pockets are easily accessible and do not reach too far towards the armpits.

The inner lining should be removable and washable.

Removable inner lining: In summer you inevitably work up a sweat in a leather suit. A removable inner lining is practical because it can be washed without any problems and dries quickly without having to clean the entire suit every time.

Zippers: Ideally, two-piece suits have robust metal zippers that are sewn to the leather of the jacket and waistband and are not attached to the unstable inner lining of the jacket.

When the sun really pops, perforated station wagons are a blessing.

Perforation: Heavily perforated station wagons are only good in summer. Even at moderate temperatures of around 15 degrees Celsius, the body cools down much too quickly.

Stretch inserts: A perfect cut requires only a few areas of stretch because it already takes the riding position on the motorcycle into account. Stretch inserts – including those made of abrasion-resistant Kevlar material – are taboo in the fall zone. On the inside of the crotch, thighs and upper arms, however, they noticeably increase driving comfort.

Knee slider: Knee sliders hardly make sense in traffic, but they are often included with sporty leather suits. However, they are only suitable if the suit is tight in the knee area and does not wrinkle. In addition, the stable Velcro connection must be positioned in such a way that the sliders touch down as large as possible.
