Trial World Championships 2016 in Germany
German World Championship run in Gefrees
German Trial World Championship run in Gefrees and not a Spanish winner in the GP class? Currently unlikely. With Jaime Busto, the next high-flyer is already sailing. But Toni Bou is still firmly on the trial throne.

Sunday church bells ring in Gefrees at eleven o’clock in the morning. Almost like an ordered bell for the Saturday winner and nine-time world champion Toni Bou, who has just arrived at his first section of the day. The trialers of all three classes have to complete three rounds of twelve sections. The rules: I drive without a mistake, I have a zero, I screw everything up, I get a five. In between there are one, two or three “penalty points” for “feet set”. So far, so easy. So let’s concentrate on the shining light of this sport – Toni Bou. Spaniards, Catalans, Andorrans? It doesn’t matter, because the 29-year-old Bou is the universal world ambassador of trials sport anyway.

Since 2007 he has continuously won every possible championship in the sport. That means: In addition to what he drives in on stone, rocks and roots every year, he also wins the indoor trial world championships on giant artificial obstacles in winter. So there are ten other indoor World Cup titles added to the nine outdoor titles. It has already risen from the one from 2016.
Two-strokes set the tone
The church bells have fallen silent, the engines are sawing in the sections. Sawing is the appropriate expression, because with the exception of the Montesa (Honda), two-stroke engines set the tone here, in the classic “fragrant and smoking” way. Beta, GasGas, Sherco, Scorpa, TRS, Vertigo – small European manufacturers against the four-stroke giant from Japan. Actually, the FIM wanted to ban the two-stroke engines for environmental reasons, but would have only eliminated the manufacturer and left it again. Probably a good thing, because the reduction to the simple is the core of trials.
While Bou’s exquisitely constructed factory Honda – or more precisely the factory Montesa – is already thundering, he watches his opponents in the sections. He may seem aloof to outsiders, rarely shows emotion, but his eyes betray his vigilance. For years he has been driving his opponents in front of him. His compatriots Adam Raga and Albert Cabestany, the Japanese Takahisa Fujinami or the British James Dabill. A driver generation that ages together with Bou, but holds its own championship every year. The one behind Toni Bou.
Section free for the boss
But now the section is free for the boss over rough and tumble. Anyone who only thinks of leisurely pounding around while trial driving is mistaken. Racing is especially popular on the steep forest section number three. Even a tire burn-out is pending here. Every crumb of dirt should be removed to ensure maximum grip. Immediately after the starting line there is a high, vertical natural wall, then it goes briefly over the forest floor to the next rock and then extremely steep into a rugged stone field that is apparently impassable even on foot. Even the helpers – or better here, catchers – hold onto tied straps. As usual, the powerhouse Toni Bou has pushed his jet helmet all the way back, sinks his neck between his shoulders almost like a turtle, and then he accelerates. What follows can hardly be seen with the naked eye.
All riders compress their bikes extremely to gain bounce, but Bou makes it even more extreme. The first rocking is followed by a massive throwing into the motorcycle. The knees are bent, the buttocks at the bottom – in order to snap forward and up in the next moment and let the motorcycle fly in perfect control. With strength and energy, Bou achieves a tremendous jump amplitude, to which the other factors of his superiority add up. His driving technique matured to perfection, coolness, courage and his endless ambition are the building blocks of his success. Throttle, clutch, balance, timing, movement – it’s a kind of magic that Bou circles through the sections. If other drivers are constantly arguing with the judges as to whether the driving line was inside or outside the arrows, Bou always puts his line ten centimeters on the safe side. He playfully compensates for the additional effort in height or difficulty.
What happens after the Toni Bou era?
Behind this dominance lies natural talent, a perfect team, clever analysis and, above all, one thing: hard work. The difference is only visible in his muscles. But Toni Bou is not unbeatable either. A shoulder injury, the result of a training fall, is currently causing him difficulties. Albert Cabestany and his strongest competitor Adam Raga were able to steal a race win from him this year. In Gefrees, however, he got the maximum number of points again.
But what happens after the Toni Bou era? Is it Jaime Busto and the German Franzi Kadlec who might then set the tone? Franzi Kadlec shows great approaches at the age of just 18. In contrast to many others on the round, the 2014 European champion is already calm and relaxed, his talent is undisputed. What he still lacks is “confidence”, as the helpers always call out to their drivers. Confidence from the first second. Wide awake and brave right from the first round. But that will be fine. Maybe the bells will ring for Franzi Kadlec next time in Gefrees.
