It has landed with us, the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. Earlier than with many others, what luck.

1,200 is a good keyword. In the case of a real 1,160 cm³, it is generously rounded up, but nonetheless 110 extra cubic meters are a word to the old 1050 engine.

Even the strongest and lightest Speedy by far remains essentially what it has always been: a well-grounded burst of strength on two wheels.

Up to around 6,000 tours you can enjoy the usual juicy triple thrust, after which the second rocket stage ignites and escalates to almost 11,000 rpm.

There is also heavily decelerating brake hardware from Brembo, newly tuned electronics and a high-end chassis from Ohlins.

A bit of grumbling: If you put on the throttle, it jerks noticeably through the system, regardless of the selected mapping.

You can also go down: narrower seats and fuel tanks provide mobility.

Thumbs up: “Speedy as hell horny by the way” it was said from the tester camp. You can read the top test in MOTORRAD 11/2021, in stores from May 14th.

Permanent burst of strength on two wheels
First driving impressions of the new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS: A well-grounded, permanent burst of strength on two wheels that never forgets its manners.

It has landed with us, the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. Earlier than with many others, what luck. The new boss triumph had to prove itself in the MOTORRAD top test. The all-encompassing top test appears in MOTORCYCLE 11/2021 (in stores from May 15th) with extensive prose and no less complete facts about the new Speedy.
The new upper triumph
1,200 is a good keyword. With a real 1,160 cm³ displacement, although generously rounded up, 110 extra cubic is a word nonetheless. Just like 30 extra horsepower and eight extra Newton meters. If you then look at the ten kilogram rind that was scraped off compared to its predecessor, you get a rough idea of the direction in which the new upper triumph will turn out.
But if you are expecting a nervous, driven barrel organ, you are wrong. Luckily. By far the strongest and lightest Speedy of them all remains essentially what it has always been: A well-grounded, permanent burst of strength on two wheels, which, despite all possible violence, never forgets its good childhood. Up to around 6,000 tours you can enjoy the usual juicy triple thrust, after which the second rocket stage ignites and escalates to almost 11,000 revolutions in a way that was not available to previous Speedy drivers. Flaming dance in the RPM Olympic? Now also with the big triple from Hinckley.

Throwing instead of balancing
The handling also unearths qualities that have been cherished over decades. As before, the latest incarnation smacks across the asphalt as if on rails and lets itself easily and confidently in the “Bull horn handle” throw from side to side. What’s new? Well, in the past it was more about balancing than throwing. The small diet and the compact ergonomics with wider handlebars, narrower tank cap and more front wheel orientation are not without consequences, add a tasty pinch of agility to the iron stability, without even remotely within the shouting range of attributes such as “nervousness” get.

10 kilos less, more pressure on the front wheel, new frame: The handling of the Speedy changes from balancing to throwing.
High-end chassis from Ohlins
There is also a finely tuned package of heavily decelerating brake hardware from Brembo, newly tuned electronics and a high-end chassis from Ohlins. The former is beyond any doubt, the latter is particularly noticeable in the much smoother ABS control behavior and the latter has almost infinite, rather elegant damping reserves, but could act a little less tightly at the front.
Nothing to complain about? Well, a bit. If you put on the throttle, it jerks noticeably through the system, regardless of the selected mapping. Two Allen keys act as on-board tools – well – “cheap” as the Brit says. And 17,500 euros are appropriate after the promotion to the hyper-naked upper league, but unfortunately there is no alternative. A less pointed, but based on experience hardly less fun basic variant is no longer planned in the future.

Has the Speed Triple 1200 RS lost its charm as a hyper-naked with 180 hp?
Yes, I will miss the gentlemen hool.
No, finally there is speed in the triple. fire-free!

Conclusion
“Speedy as hell horny, by the way” it calls from the tester’s office to the question of the first opinion in three words. Anything else would also be surprising, as Triumph has watched for a decade as naked bikes become hyper-naked elsewhere. However, Triumph does not fall into the trap of overtaking it, but rather places the new Speed Triple 1200 RS well positioned in the upper third of the class.
