Egg-laying woolly milk tiger

Street Twin, Speed Triple, Tiger Explorer, Thruxton – they’re really busy in Hinckley at the moment. In the revised Triumph Tiger Sport 1050, the Triumph model offensive has now reached its preliminary climax. We drove so that you don’t have to buy a tiger in a poke.

When the good Lord created the hinterland of Nice, he was almost certainly thinking of us motorcyclists. Within reach of the Côte d’Azur, fine roads wind here boldly through the southernmost foothills of the Maritime Alps. Here the Route Napoleon and the Route des Grandes Alpes meet, the Col de Turini and the Bonette are not a full tank of fuel away. The best way to get here is by motorcycle – whether alone, as a couple or in a group. Just what you need in terms of luggage, and then experience this beautiful piece of earth on day tours from the hotel. In this respect, Triumph is absolutely right to let the revised Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport out of the cage right here.

That long-legged asphalt multifunctional tool that has set itself the task of maximizing the intersection between travel comfort and sportiness. So exactly what you want for a trip to this delightful area. The modernization of the ten-fifty sports cat, which was last renewed in 2013, focuses, as we now know, on Euro 4 and a more modern electronics package, in addition to fine-tuning the details. Quite similar to the recently revised Speed Triple, with which the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport shares the three-cylinder genes.

Even smoother torque curve

Here, too, ride-by-wire puts an end to the throttle cable – and the engine of the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport is fit for the future. The electronic control of the throttle valve enables different driving modes, this time there are three to choose from. And they are pretty self-explanatory: Rain, Road and Sport. In addition to the response behavior of the engine, these modes change the control behavior of the ABS (in two stages) and the newly added traction control (also in two stages, can also be switched off).

And just like in the Speed Triple, the modified engine in the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport is an extremely manageable unit, shines with the finest controllability, low load change reactions and silky lard – regardless of the speed. Nominal power and maximum torque are practically unchanged (plus 1 hp and 2 Nm), but Triumph promises an even smoother torque curve and thus more even power output. In terms of character, the three-cylinder fits perfectly into such a GT motorcycle.

Despite Euro 4, the new tiger purrs and hisses more wildly than before. Throaty but subtle – a nice sound.

Stress-free power output and pleasantly low-vibration running, effortless punch for powerful driving performance, this is how you can pace for days without interruption. And as with the Speed Triple, the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport also benefits greatly from the revised gearshift mechanism, thanks to which gear changes are very pleasant. Whether the manual force of the new, servo-assisted anti-hopping clutch is really a full 48 percent lower than that of the previous model can only be found out in a direct comparison; in any case, the effort required is quite low.

And the presence of a slip clutch is always a welcome bonus on a sporty ride. The same applies to the new traction control of the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport, which is as sensitive and discreet as the one in the new Speedy. Control interventions do not take place quite so late, which takes into account the changed purpose of the vehicle, but is gentle and understandable.

The Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport weighs 241 kilograms when ready to drive

The anti-lock device of the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport is also not as sharply applied as on the Speedy counterpart, it opens the brake a little earlier, even if the ABS hardware is the same here as there. However, this can also be attributed to the different vehicle geometry and in particular the higher weight of 241 kilograms ready to drive (factory specification).

The ergonomics are unchanged upright, the arrangement of seat, handlebars and footrests should make the majority of all pilots pleasant robbery possible. Thanks to a new, easy-to-adjust window as well as the small wind deflectors and handguards, the wind and weather protection of the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport is also appropriate for this vehicle category. Only at very high speeds does pressure build up noticeably; And a clear view, because here no edge disturbs the unobstructed view.

Compromise between sportiness and comfort

That’s a good thing, because our tour guide Julien, French stunt driver and so far reasonably civil on the road, treated himself to a double espresso with lots of sugar after lunch, now he’s letting the tiger off the leash. We switch to sport mode and hang on to it. For a motorcycle of this size, the all-rounder can be moved remarkably nimbly and is particularly light-footed from the central position. Up to a pretty crazy pace. Okay, the center of gravity isn’t necessarily that far down, the crowd is always present. But the turning in is fluid and linear, the stiffness of the hips of some long fork athletes is alien to the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport. The Pirelli Angel ST fitted as the first tire harmonises perfectly with the motorcycle and also provides good feedback.

The Showa suspension elements (fully adjustable at the front, preload and rebound at the rear), unchanged from the predecessor, spring at the correct rate and dampen on the full side, thus finding a good compromise between sportiness and comfort. The only thing that the Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport doesn’t like at all is braking in an inclined position. The erection moment is enormous, so it is generally advisable to brake a little at the back. The braking system works flawlessly, not excessively snappy, but nicely dosed and, if the worst comes to the worst, grips with the necessary vehemence. Finally, it should be mentioned that the workmanship is extremely solid, especially in view of the down-to-earth price.

The easy-to-read cockpit is practically unchanged except for the gear indicator. New: three driving modes and traction control.

As with the Speed Triple, more beautiful screws, finer castings and an overall flawless finish adorn the street predator. And, as befits a concept with a travel ambition, the original accessories include the obligatory tank bag, a case system, heated grips and a low bench seat. Conclusion? Anyone interested in the Top test of the new Speed Triple  remembered, will experience a little dejà vu. None of the innovations on the new Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport are earth-shattering in themselves.

The new Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport also remains a real one-for-all all-rounder. As an egg-laying woolly milk tiger sharpened all around, with Euro 4 and more modern electronics.
