Unik Motorcycles: DR Big Scrambler
Suzuki DR 800 S Big conversion
Delicious scrambler stew from Lisbon
With the DR Big, Suzuki introduced the duckbill in travel enduro bikes. No reason for the men from Unik Motorcycles from Lisbon to keep this relic in their renovation.

- Conclusion
On the cult enduro DR 800 S Big from Suzuki there are many things double. Carburetor, ignition, balance shafts, wheels, valves. This mechanical duality frames a single 779 cubic cylinder in an almost controversial manner. A single piston with a diameter of 90 millimeters takes 105 millimeters from dead center to dead center, generating 59 Nm and 50 hp. The Langhuber reaches speeds of only 6,600 revs as standard. For comparison: The currently largest single cylinder with 690 cubic from KTM has a 105 millimeter bore with an 80 millimeter stroke and turns 2,000 revs higher, while it also lets a good 21 hp more on the chain.
DR Big remodeling
A very badly preserved example, the already rust-prone Suzuki finds its way to Unik Motorcycles in Lisbon. The owner is tired of the 90s look and wants something cool. At the DR, there is little that can be done with simple means. The lush fairing with the historic duck bill and the 29-liter tank are omitted, while the rear of the Flex is offered as a sacrifice. The two Unik makers do nothing on the chassis. Only the rims are powdered and re-spoked.
Unik Motorcycles
The tank actually belongs to a Suzuki GN and was adapted to the frame of the DR.
Suzuki meets Suzuki meets Yamaha
The original DR tank holds 24 liters of flammable material, and the volume is bought with a structural dimension that extends just above the crankcase. Unik replaces this tank with the classically shaped one of a Suzuki GN and adapts its sheet metal to the frame of the Big. Unik cuts generously at the rear, creates a loop with a short enduro fender and adapts a new bench seat. The two mufflers come from Arrow – actually Yamaha XTZ 1200 – which are abundantly shortened by Unik and fit on the rear of the Suzuki.

New optics from the artist
The removed cladding of the DR provides space for a complete redesign of the front. The headlight housing of a Honda takes on a yellow headlight, the original double clocks are replaced by a Daytona instrument cluster. A Renthal handlebar accommodates the standard switch units, supplemented by a Brembo brake pump and a new clutch fitting from Domino. Unik is a big fan of the work of the artist Vasco Costa from Lisbon. Its style with strong lines and bright colors should find its place at the Big. Almost all components are provided with the characteristic lines in the style of the artist. The graphics almost seem to have been drawn with a pen.

Many are beautiful, but also impassable.
Better to leave it in its original condition.
Conclusion
If you start looking for used DR 800s, you will usually find well-hung pieces at reasonable prices. The author is already searching hard, the inspiration from Unik for a chic DR custom bike is there.
