The decision to build a cruiser had already gone through the head of BMW in 1993, but it wasn’t until 1997 that the model with high handlebar celebrated its premiere. And not entirely by chance in the USA. Because Harley-Davidson and the Japanese copyists had been able to double their sales there in the cruiser segment since the beginning of the 90s. With sales figures so flourishing in the United States and a boom to be expected here in Germany too, the Munich-based company finally gave the go-ahead for the Bayern cruiser. Sales of more than 30,000 units worldwide show that the white-blue plans to enter this segment have been implemented late, but have so far worked out completely. In Germany, the experiment landed easily in the top ten in 1998 with 3,440 units, which was completely surprising even for the successful company.
The BMW engineers and the American chief designer David Robb created a mix of classic cruiser elements and the tried and tested high-tech ingredients from the four-valve boxer generation, such as injection and ignition controlled by engine management, a three-way catalytic converter and the ABS II braking system as option. With the high technical effort, BMW was able to score points with the regular audience despite the great polarization. In the meantime, the number of Bavarian cruisers here in the country has grown to around 8,000 units. The smaller variant offered at the same time as the R 850 C with 50 hp from 1999 remains with the used advice because of its unsuccessfulness ?? the price difference of only 500 euros was too small? disregarded; In 2001 it disappeared again from the offer.
What do buyers of used goods need to focus on? Up until the end of 2000, there were a few customer complaints about insufficient chrome plating of rims, exhaust systems and other parts. BMW has settled many complaints within the guarantee and occasionally also on goodwill, but as a second owner it is better to insist on depreciation from the seller rather than hope for goodwill.
During the test drive, it is important to pay particular attention to how the five-speed gearbox can be shifted. And also ask the previous owner if he has ever had problems with it. The model is less affected by the notorious constant speed jolt than other four-valve box models. Nevertheless, check whether the first owner has installed the coding plug, which increases the idle speed a little in order to minimize the jerking that takes getting used to in partial load operation.
Does the battery still do its job satisfactorily when it starts? Is the on-board socket available as an option from BMW perhaps already there to supply the battery with enough voltage from the socket? Even a closer look at the engine after the test drive to see whether the cylinder base and head, all covers and the cardan have remained without traces of oil can prevent subsequent trouble.
Interested parties should be clear about which accessories they absolutely want to have before buying. A luggage system or a windshield are often included in the offer at no extra charge. But retrofitting an ABS is an illusion because it is far too expensive. The minimum price to purchase the baroque BMW cruiser should be just under 7,000 euros.
