Used bargains?

The demographic development knows no mercy: The frequent riders among motorcycle buyers are getting older and more comfortable. For those who are still a little livelier there is the BMW R 1200 RT. The tourer is worth it as a used bike?

Klaus Herder

05/01/2017

You don’t have to have a stomach and a back to appreciate the blessings of a comfortable motorcycle workplace. Often enough, one of the few advantages of getting older is enough to realize that you don’t need to prove anything to anyone and that you can simply travel much more relaxed while sitting upright and with proper wind protection. Anyone who has left the phase of stooped frenzy behind them will therefore like to land with the tourer. If your wallet and your spouse allow it, even on a luxury tourer. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be overweight and underdynamic, which BMW has been proving since 1978 with the Boxer RT models. They were actually never the strongest or most lavishly equipped representatives of their craft, but almost always the lightest, handiest and therefore most dynamic driving. The BMW presented in 2005 as the successor to the R 1150 RT R 1200 RT was no exception. It continued the old RT virtues, but was otherwise an RT quantum leap.

Engine revised regularly

The new engine, borrowed from the R 1200 GS and boosted from 98 to 110 hp, ensured a much fuller torque curve, more smooth running and significantly better performance. The optionally electronically adjustable chassis (ESA) offered a better basic set-up as well as more driving stability and maneuverability. And the completely new cladding shone with almost perfect wind and weather protection. BMW also proved to be capable of learning and replaced the unpopular full integral ABS with a partially integral ABS that was much easier to dose (hand lever for all three discs, foot brake only for the rear). Like the cases and the electrically adjustable windshield, this was part of the standard scope of delivery, but this did not change much of the extensive list of optional accessories. The base price of around 15,000 euros quickly turned into a final price of 18,500 euros. For the 2010 model year, the BMW R 1200 RT got a little better: The heavily modified dohc engine from the HP2 sports boxer made the RT even livelier and sounded worlds better.

Market situation

A rather manageable offer by BMW standards, the holding period is longer than average. Real bargains are the exception, good copies cost good money.

Typical offer (example): 10,490 EUR: EZ 11/2010, 51,650 km, top equipment, ESA, tires and inspection new. Offer from a multi-brand authorized dealer in Schleswig-Holstein. Manageable mileage, full service history.

Low price level – from 5,500 euros

Example display: 111,446 km, EZ 2/2006, HU 5/2017, 1st hand, anthracite metallic, crash bars, audio system, heated grips, intercom, new: oil change, air filter, battery, brake discs, front / rear tires 70/60%, VB 5,499 euros (private offer from Hessen).

RT drivers are often a lot of drivers, so first-hand offers with over 80,000 kilometers are not so rare and well worth considering. Also in this price range: government machines rocked down.

Medium price level – from 7,000 euros

Example display: 40,960 km, EZ 7/2006, 2nd hand, gray metallic, ESA, on-board computer, heated grips, heated seats, white indicators, radio preparation, BMW cylinder protection, socket, Remus silencer, tires 90%, 7,900 euros Wurttemberg).

The majority of the 1200 first edition plays in this price league, the mileage is usually between 25,000 and 60,000 kilometers. There are also a few dohc models (from 2010) with 50,000 kilometers upwards.

High price level – from 10,000 euros

Example display: 15,825 km, EZ 3/2012, 2nd hand, blue metallic, ESA, RDC, ASC, radio / CD, heated grips, on-board computer, heated seats, chrome exhaust, accessory bench, 12,500 euros (dealer offer from Rhineland-Palatinate)

In the five-digit euro range, models from the first edition of the R 1200 RT can only be found very rarely; almost without exception, completely equipped dohc models can be found here. For twelve mille there are cream slices with few kilometers, at 13,900 euros it’s over.

Dealer interview

Michael Steinke is a BMW sales consultant at ZTK (Zweirad-Technik Konemann, www.ztk.de), one of the largest motorcycle dealers in northern Germany with locations in Schneverdingen and Uelzen in Lower Saxony.

Which customers are interested in the R 1200 RT??

These are pure touring riders who are usually on the road in pairs. The majority of them have already had BMW boxers before. And if, for once, they come from third-party manufacturers, they are mostly former Yamaha XJR or FJR riders. Age-wise all 50 plus.

Money doesn’t play that big role for them, does it?

Money doesn’t play a big role at the moment, regardless of the buyers. The money is useless in the bank, and people prefer to invest in motorcycles. There is also really little funding at the moment.

The must-have extras for used vehicles?

Actually everything that was offered at the time of the new sale, complete equipment is popular. And a manageable mileage. With basic equipment and / or over 60,000 kilometers, that will be difficult. Thanks to the comparability on the Internet, the customer very quickly receives an offer with a lower mileage for only marginally more money.

The popularity of the R 1200 RT from the retailer’s point of view, i.e. with regard to trade-ins and resale?

That is in the healthy midfield.

What role does the 2010 facelift play – can this be felt in the demand?

Hardly. There are definitely customers who are not even aware that something has happened and who really don’t care. A good 2009 with few kilometers may be easier to sell than a 2011 with a higher mileage.

The most important feature about the viewing appointment – let me guess it is …

The complete checkbook, of course! Among other things, so that you can be sure that all “technical actions” have been completed. If it is not available, that would be an exclusion criterion for me as a private buyer, because there are enough other offers with a complete service history.

The price structure – where do you think serious offers start??

From 7,000 euros for the first edition. With full equipment it has about 60,000 kilometers down.

Conclusion

Really expensive new and not a bargain as a used one. And yet the BMW R 1200 RT is inexpensive in the truest sense of the word, because the combination of almost perfect travel comfort and dynamism that offers a lot of driving pleasure is unique.
