Dealer builds MT-09 super sports cars
Yamaha has protected various model abbreviations for supersport models. The Japanese have just presented the R7 based on the MT-07. An Italian dealer has already built an R9-M around an MT-09 on its own.

In 2014 Jacopo Marzaro sat on one for the first time Yamaha MT-09. And right away he asked himself what this three-cylinder concept could do on the racetrack. In 2021 the answer will be on the wheels – the Yamaha R9-M based on a Yamaha Tracer 900 GT.
It was developed and built by Marzaro himself as a mechanic at the Italian Yamaha dealer Venezia Moto. Around a year of work went into the successful conversion, with hardly one stone left unturned.
Radically modified chassis

The most extensive modifications were made to the chassis. The standard rear frame did not want to match the sporty demands at all and had to give way completely. A do-it-yourself makes the stern steeper and only takes a self-formed solo hump. At the front, a new Ohlins fork leads into aluminum fork bridges milled from solid, while Swedish goods also replace the series component at the rear. The new steering stubs are attached below the upper triple clamp. As a replacement for the standard cast rims, lightweight magnesium rims from O.Z. between the wheel suspensions. Brembo GP4 RX brake calipers in combination with Brembo Supersport discs promise exquisite braking power on the front wheel. Slicks ensure sufficient grip. A self-made full fairing, a carbon fender at the front and an adapted tank cover round off the new lines.
Performance up, weight down
Marzaro also devoted himself intensively to the three-cylinder Tracer 900. With a lot of fine-tuning, a new Akrapovic exhaust, a higher-throughput BMC air filter and a new ECU mapping, the triple has increased from 115 to 140 hp. And because Marzaro disposed of or relieved a lot of parts in the course of the conversion, these horses only have to deal with 155 kilograms ready to drive. Chapeau!
And who knows, history might repeat itself. In the case of the R7, too, it was privateers who built the first super sports variants based on the MT-07 drive. With such a nice steep forward from Italy, we don’t want to wait too long for an R9 from Yamaha.

Should Yamaha build a super sports car around the 900 three-cylinder?
Voted 207 times
Yes absolutely.
No, there is no need for that.
Conclusion
So far, Yamaha has only had the model code R9 protected. An Italian enthusiast has already built a remarkable super sports car around the Yamaha three-cylinder on his own. Let’s see if the Japanese follow suit at the factory.
