What actually drives: Klaus Esser
20 questions to Klaus Esser
Klaus Esser (59) started his mail order business for motorcycle clothing in 1980. The name: Polo express delivery.
10/12/2011
Today something like this is called a grandiose “start-up company”, in the past it was simply called a garage business. In 1980, Klaus Esser (59) started his mail order business for motorcycle clothing. The name: polo Express delivery. The basic range: four jacket models, three different trousers and two pairs of gloves were available. Shortly thereafter, Esser opened the first of today’s 100 polo shops, and in 1984 he published his first catalog. In 2009 Esser moves the company from Dusseldorf to Juchen, 30 kilometers away, where the music lover invites you to top-class rock concerts between the 25,000 m² warehouse and his 1,300 m² shop in the “Polo-Drom”.
Your current motorcycle?
Triumph Scrambler, BMW K 1600 GT, Gilera GP 800. From time to time I rent Buell Lightning, Ducati Multistrada, Yamaha Vmax, Harley-Davidson Sportster and Suzuki DR 350.
And your first?
Honda CB 500 Four.
Hand on heart: your most beautiful?
For touring the Moto Guzzi California II.
Which bike would you never buy (again)??
Once had a Yamaha FZR 750 R OW 01. Great motorcycle, but could only be ridden in a sporty way. In the long run it was not universally applicable enough for me.
Which must definitely be in the collection?
Just done: BMW K 1600 GT. I’ve been a six-cylinder fan since the introduction of the Honda CBX 1000.
Quick decision, briefly justified:
Chain or cardan?
The third solution, the toothed belt: quiet, soft power transmission, more durable than a chain, no further maintenance required.
Air or water cooling?
does not matter.
Clip-on handlebars or handlebars?
Likes to ride, therefore an ergonomically well-shaped handlebar.
Wire spoke or forged wheels?
Must match the type, but wire-spoke wheels are just more appealing.
Gore-Tex or one piece?
Depending on the short or long distance and the weather, I wear leather or waterproof textile. On hot days I switch to airy protective clothing.
Steam jet or sponge and brush?
Do you know our motorcycle wash system Polo-Bike-Wash? Excellent! If there isn’t one around, the carefully used steam jet – but with leather!
The most beautiful motorcycle experience?
An enduro off-road tour with friends in Andalusia.
Of course also the most embarrassing?
In all honesty: I really haven’t experienced anything embarrassing – at least not in connection with a motorcycle or a motorcycle tour.
Who lends a hand on your motorcycle: the workshop or just yourself?
I really, really like to ride my motorcycle and I want to enjoy every ride. So that it stays that way, I leave the work to be done by qualified workshops.
Which screwdriver performance (repair or conversion) are you particularly proud of?
Well, whether I’m proud of that – probably not: Adding little things like installing a windshield, installing other indicators, replacing rubber grips.
Which motorcycle hero is on pole position for you??
From the racing sector, along with many others, Tom Luethi, Stefan Bradl, Valentino Rossi and Katja Poensgen.
What shouldn’t be missing from your motorcycle clothes??
A motorcycle helmet on the cutting edge of technology.
And what would you never dare take to the streets with??
With the Piaggio MP3 400 with three wheels and car registration, it took a lot of effort to take to the streets. But it was all the more fun. So, I would try everything that has a motor and at least two wheels.
Where do you like to be most of the time?
Like to drive winding country roads or off-road in easy terrain. Plus good air and beautiful, free nature. Who has to sit behind you? It is imperative that nobody has to take a seat behind me. An easy off-road tour with the enduro, preferably without, a longer tour with a passenger.
And who would you like to go after??
I’d like to do a couple of slower practice laps on the racetrack
Tom Luethi, Stefan Bradl, Valentino Rossi or Katja Poensgen follow in the ideal line.
