A world record with vodka in the tank

Ryan Montgomery is the fastest person on a vodka-fueled motorcycle. The owner of a distillery in Montana reached almost 182 km / h with his converted Yamaha XS 850 at the Speed Week in Bonneville.

Montgomery competed in an alternative fuel class. Here a speed of 158 km / h had to be hit, which was set up with a tequila-powered bike. Montgomery achieved 182 km / h and a new record. His record only lasted 72 hours, however, before Montgomery was dethroned by Dennis Weinhold, who burned a whopping 225 km / h on the Utah salt lake with his 1974 Honda CB 750. Weinhold did not fire any vodka, however.

Vodka as an amateur fuel

No broken leg, because the record drive from Montgomery was also more of a whim. An old Yamaha XS 850 from 1980, which he had picked up on the edge of the field, served as the basis for him.

The vodka that was burned would not have been drinkable.

This was made viable again with a time investment of six months and converted to run on ethanol. For more top speed, a small half-shell fairing, low-mounted handlebar stubs and a slim seat hump have been adapted. The vodka used is not drinkable, it is actually a waste product in production. A total of around 40 liters of vodka fuel were used for the record drives.

The name Sudden Wisdom comes from a whiskey from the Montgomery Distillery, the addition “Amateur Racing Fuel” shows with a wink the seriousness of the record attempt. He left it open whether Montgomery would attack again with more liquor.
